Broadsheet 30cm.; 2pp. Moderate wear and toning to margins some faint dust-soil else a Very Good example.<br /> <br /> Published version of a forged letter purportedly intercepted from an English Jesuit to the father rector of Brussels in which the author delineates the ways in which secret members of the Society of Jesus will undermine the British parliament trade and the monarchy: "Our Superlative Design is to work the Protestants as well as the Catholicks to welcome in a Conqueror and that is by this Means: We hope instantly to dissolve Trade and hinder the building of Shipping in devising probable Designs and putting on the State upon Expeditions as that of Cadiz was in taking away the Merchant Ships so that they may not easily catch and light upon the West-India Fleet" p. 2.<br /> <br /> The letter was in fact written by the courtier and mischief-maker John Maynard 1592-1658 and while most members of King Charles I's court accept the letter as genuine Maynard's patron the Duke of Buckingham recognized his favorite's hand.<br /> <br /> This printed edition coincides with the fabricated conspiracy of a Popish Plot which took hold of England and Scotland from 1679 to 1681 and was presumably used as evidence against the Catholics despite the fact that the letter had been debunked generations earlier. Marie de Blonay's career began inauspiciously--her entry into the Order of the Visitation recently founded by Francis de Sales was delayed by the brutal murder of her brother who was ambushed and stabbed to death by the son of a rival family. The tragedy occurred while his father was abroad and the body was brought instead to his sister Marie. <br /> <br /> Marie did eventually enter the rapidly expanding Order of the Visitation where she first worked as a nurse before being named Superieure of the Monastere de Lyon.<br /> <br /> OCLC locates two copies in North America as of April 2025 at Johns Hopkins and BYU. This copy a happy blend of classical and Bohemian design the enormous clasp in the shape of a woven basket filled with fruits and flowers nearly obscuring the French-style gilt tooling on the crimson goat binding. "Above all Vogt was a distinguished zoologist whose writings did much to further development of this sience" DSB XIV 57. Vogt war einst Mitglied sowohl des Vorparlaments als auch der Nationalversammlung. "Von jeher hatte sich Vogt offen der materialistischen Naturanschauung zugewandt und als nun Rudolf Wagner in ungeschickter Weise gegen die deutschen Kraft- und Stoff-Philosophen Büchner Moleschott Vogt das Feldgeschrei erhob eine bibelgemäße Forschung oder wenigstens eine 'doppelte Buchführung' des Forschers verlangte bei der seine wissenschaftlichen Funde sein Glaubenbekenntniß nicht berühren dürften bearbeitete ihn Vogt in seiner Broschüre 'Köhlerglaube und Wissenschaft' die vier Auflagen innerhalb eines Jahres erlebte mit Keulenschlägen. Er hatte stets die Lacher auf seiner Seite und erntete mit seinen drastischen Vergleichen nach denen z.B. die Gedanken in einem ähnlichen Verhältniß zum Gehirn stehen sollten wie die flüssigen Ausscheidungen des Körpers zu den Nieren eine nicht ganz unbedenkliche Volkthümlichkeit auf der anderen Seite natürlich einen maßlosen Haß der Clerikalen" ADB XL 185 ff. Vogt 1817-1895. - "1847-1849 war der Befürworter empirischer Forschung Professor für Zoologie an der Universität Giessen. Vogt beteiligte sich an der Revolution von 1848 wurde in die Frankfurter Nationalversammlung gewählt und hielt 1848 seine berühmte Rede über die Trennung von Kirche und Staat. Mit dem Rumpfparlament zog er sich nach Stuttgart zurück und wirkte als einer der fünf Reichsregenten. Nach der Niederschlagung der Revolution musste Vogt im Sommer 1849 nach Bern flüchten wo seine Eltern lebten. 1852 liess er sich in Genf nieder und wurde Professor für Geologie an der dortigen Akademie. Vogt lancierte einen publizistischen Angriff gegen Karl Marx den er beschuldigte ein Agent von Österreich zu sein. Zudem stellte er die Kommunisten als Fälscher dar welche die Menschen mit Schalmeienklängen verführten. Marx antwortete mit dem Pamphlet «Herr Vogt» 1860. Darin beschuldigte er nun seinerseits Vogt ein bezahlter Agent im Dienst des Kaisers Napoleon III. zu sein" S. Scholl in HLS. - "Von jeher hatte sich V. offen der materialistischen Naturanschauung zugewandt und als nun Rudolf Wagner in ungeschickter Weise gegen die deutschen Kraft- und Stoff-Philosophen Büchner Moleschott Vogt das Feldgeschrei erhob eine bibelgemäße Forschung oder wenigstens eine doppelte Buchführung des Forschers verlangte bei welcher seine wissenschaftlichen Funde sein Glaubensbekenntniß nicht berühren dürften bearbeitete ihn V. in seiner Broschüre Köhlerglaube und Wissenschaft Gießen 1855 welche vier Auflagen innerhalb eines Jahres erlebte mit Keulenschlägen. Er hatte stets die Lacher auf seiner Seite und erntete mit seinen drastischen Vergleichen nach denen z. B. die Gedanken in einem ähnlichen Verhältniß zum Gehirn stehen sollten wie die flüssigen Ausscheidungen des Körpers zu den Nieren eine nicht ganz unbedenkliche Volksthümlichkeit auf der andern Seite natürlich einen maßlosen Haß der Clerikalen" E.
