First edition of this scarce and well annotated catalogue for the Presbyterian Board of Publication detailing 1106 bound volumes written by the Presbyterian Church’s professors and scholars together with collections of psalms hymns music books children’s picture books catechisms spelling books readers cards and engravings. The Board of Publication’s aims were not only to counteract the tremendous spread and influence of the American Sunday School Union publications flooding the American market in the post-Civil War era but also to ensure doctrinal purity for Presbyterian Sunday Schools and church members. This was a pivotal point for the Presbyterian Church as at the same time this catalogue was published 29 representatives of denominational publishing houses and societies met to develop the National Sunday School Convention which would result in a uniform curriculum while the Presbyterian Church was issuing the Westminster Teacher. This catalogue lists available titles on Africa Huguenots Alphabet Cards Berry-pickers of Wisconsin Chinaman in California Quakers and Presbyterians Zulu-land and more. Although preceded by a very small 38 pp. catalogue in 1854 this was the first major annotated descriptive bibliography and catalogue issued on Presbyterian titles. Contents include a report from Chauncey W. West on the mission he led to India Ceylon and Arabia. His report of their arrival at Galle Sri Lanka notes a local newspaper report had been published declaring "that we were polygamists that they must beware us and not receive us for if they did they would be partakers of our evil deeds."
