2012WRCLIT70037New Haven; Bryn Mawr; New York 2012. 20; 20pp. text in both English and German plus twenty-five original leaves tipped into accompanying folders. Large folio. Fine. In a custom clamshell box. The German Bible in America has a long and significant history reflective of the European culture which gave it birth the local conditions of Pennsylvania where it rose to its greatest heights and the rich German-American culture created by emigrants and their descendants in the 19th-century United States. From the first American edition of a Bible in German in 1743 through the late 19th century numerous printers and publishers issued Bibles in various formats ranging from large folios intended for lectern use to smaller versions for personal study. This leaf book celebrates the range and richness of these productions indicative of the world of German culture in America in the 18th and 19th centuries as expressed through its most widely studied text in a series of twenty- five leaves. Each set contains two versions of the descriptive text one in English and the other in German with an introduction by Don Yoder Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies Folklore and Folk-Life at the University of Pennsylvania. Further text describes the printers of each of the leaves the circumstances under which they were printed and other attributes. Each leaf is enclosed in an individual folder. The German Bible in America is issued in an edition of sixty copies with fifty of the regular series and ten additional deluxe copies containing six extra leaves of illustrations from the illustrated Bibles included in the collection. This is one of fifty regular copies numbered by hand. A deluxe issue with six additional illustrated leaves is also available for $3500. unknown books

Frontis. engr. t.-p. 58 912 18 25 1 206 2 17 1 blank pp.

When the Jesuit scholars at Rheims succeeded in printing their Catholic translation of the New Testament into English first edition 1582 the event affected various English Protestant scholars in different ways: Some were offended or outraged others intrigued and yet others spurred to action. William Fulke of Pembroke College Cambridge was among those offended outraged and spurred: In 1589 he produced the first edition of his work attempting to refute the Rheims New Testament. His approach however which was to print the Rheims NT in parallel columns with the Bishops' NT the then accepted version of the Church of England supplying accompanying notes and explanations had unforeseen consequences.
As Darlow and Moule comment "by printing the Rheims Testament in full side by side with the Bishops' version Fulke secured for the former a publicity which it would not otherwise have obtained and was indirectly responsible for the marked influence which Rheims exerted on the Bible of 1611." Alan Thomas elaborates by observing that "many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of King James's Version and thus passed into the language" Great Books and Book Collectors p. 108.
This is the fourth edition "wherein are many grosse absurdities corrected." A portrait of William Fulke precedes the engraved title-page both done by William Marshall. The Biblical text is followed as issued by Fulke's Defense of the Sincere and True Translation of the Holy Scriptures into the English Tongue against the Manifold Cavils Frivolous Quarrels and Impudent Slanders of Gregorie Martin.
   Â
STC 2nd ed. 2947; Darlow & Moule 371; ESTC S121246; Herbert 480. 1949CNJL314Cleveland and New York: The World Publishing Company 1949. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Rogers Bruce. Two volumes the Bible one of 975 copies elephant folio size 942 pp. and Making of the Bible number 178 of 1875 copies quarto size 41 pp. The second folio Bible designed by Bruce Rogers this time for an American publisher his first was the "Oxford Lectern Bible" published in 1935 using the King James Version. No other book designer / typographer from the history of printing can claim to have designed two complete folio Bibles each one highly regarded. Bruce Rogers 1870-1857 American typographer who invented the "Centaur" tyepface based on the Renaissance-period printing of Nicolas Jenson is considered by many to be one of the greatest book designers of the twentieth century. He designed books for the Riverside Press Cambridge when he cut his first typeface "Montaigne" named for the first book it appeared in "The Essays of Montaigne" 1903; he designed "Centaur" while working as house designer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1916 he worked for the Cambridge University Press and a few years later returned to the U.S. where he met William Edwin Rudge and was employed by him at his Mount Vernon Press. During this time he also designed books for Harvard University Press and served as typographic advisor to Lanston Monotype. In 1928 Rogers returned to England where he produced what many have called "the most important and notable typographic achievement of the twentieth century" being his Oxford Lectern Bible. The present work was done during his later years but is no less formidable in both size and scope and essential to any collection of his work.

___DESCRIPTION: Original publisher's red cloth with gilt-stamped illustration to upper board lettered in gilt to backstrip top-edge gilt quarto volume in matching red cloth with similar gilt motif to upper board and gilt lettering to backstrip with original glassine jacket and housed in a blue paper slipcase numerous flourishes and initials vintage bookseller ticket on rear pastedown; types used include Fred Goudy's Deepdene Italic Forum and Oldstyle type paper is 74 lb. 75 percent white linen rag paper from Barcham Green Mill in England elephant folio size 19.25" by 14"; "Making of the Bible" quarto size 11.5" by 8.5" pagination: Bible i-vi vii-xxii xxiii-xxiv 1-941 942 1 colophon; Making of the Bible 1-4 5-19 20-41 limited first editions of both volumes with the folio being one of 975 copies and the accompanying quarto being number 178 of 1875 copies.

___CONDITION: A very good copy of the folio with some professional restoration to the backstrip/joints some minor rubbing at edges the binding with only light dustiness gilt is bright with a few rubbed spots and the interior clean other than some minor soiling to the endpapers free of prior owner markings one very short closed tear to the upper margin of the dedication page to King James; quarto fine overall with some extremely light wear to the joints at the head and tail of the spine its glassine wrapper alas fair only as the spine has perished and we only have the panels/flaps its slipcase very good plus sturdy with some overall wear.

___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an extremely large and heavy book and therefore additional postage will apply as the standard shipping charge will not cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. A choice copy of the third English edition of the Greek Septuagint printed by John Field at Cambridge bound uniformly - in handsome seventeenth-century sombre bindings - with Field's companion New Testament in Greek a reprint of the Thomas Buck edition Cambridge 1632 and the 1650 first edition of the Scottish Metrical Psalter. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England was published by Roger Daniel 1653 with the second appearing in Walton's Polyglot edition of 1657. This edition published by John Field Printer to Cambridge University is also the first to contain the praefatio paraenetica of J. Pearson. Issued in two slight variant forms with differing Greek titles this is the issue without the Apocrypha. The presence of the Scottish Psalter printed by Evan Tyler of Edinburgh at the end of the final of these three volumes combined with the later Scottish provenance makes this cataloguer wonder if these volumes were used - and perhaps even bound - in Scotland. 1840180962Paihia: Church Missionary Society Press 1840. First Te Reo Maori edition of The Book of Daniel and The Book of Jonah the second expanded issue with the addition of the seventh book of Daniel published by William Colenso 1811-1899 on the Church Missionary Society Press. The press was the second to arrive in Aotearoa in December 1834 and printed many important documents including the Treaty of Waitangi also printed in 1840. This edition was printed by William Colenso 1811-1899 an Anglican missionary and publisher from Penzance Cornwall also notable for his contributions to botany in New Zealand. Colenso famously recorded the speeches performed at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and would criticize the new government for taking advantage of language barriers to progress colonial interests. Colenso had little interest in government printing jobs recording in his diary "In January '40 H.M.S. Herald arrived in the Bay of Islands bringing Capt. Hobson R.N. who was our first Governor. Immediately on his arrival my hands were full to overflowing with extra printing for the new Govt. and that too in the English language for which I had no type cases and was therefore obliged to have the additional "sorts" of letters in little piles on tables and boxes and even on the floor" Manuscript at The National Library Wellington. This book is also notable as an early example of Te Reo Maori in print which was an almost entirely oral language before the 19th century. As the bibliographer Herbert Williams writes "the books printed for Maori particularly those which appealed to Maori most strongly were used and perished in the using." While early Bible translations in Te Reo Maori are often credited to Colenso Herbert Williams says that W. G. Puckey 1805-1878 made these translations stating that the original manuscript for this pamphlet was "dated 1836 at which date Colenso would hardly have been competent for the task" and that after inspecting the manuscript Puckey's son was confident it was in his father's handwriting. As well as being a skilled linguist Puckey was also an accomplished boatbuilder and carpenter who oversaw the construction of many early buildings in the Northland region. Provenance: Stephen C.
