008638LONDON AND NEW YORK: CASSELL PETTER AND GALPIN. 1st Edition . Full Morocco. Fine/No Jacket. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. GUSTAVE DORE. This magnificent 2 volume set of the Gustave Dore-illustrated Holy Bible is copiously illustrated with 238 original illustrations as called for. The edition corresponds to Dan Malan's catalogue "Adrift On Dreams of Splendor" as the 1867 first book form edition using the same sheets as the magazine edition with all engravings in the right order. The book is bound in contemporary full morocco heavily embellished with blind and gilt motifs to front and rear boards and with Dore's name in gilt at the base of each spine. Burnished marbled endpapers all edges in lustrous gilt. The condition of the binding is very good with only a few marks and a some small scuffs to the top edge of the boards slight bumping to top corners and some slight wear to the front joint on Vol 1 as well as three cup rings in the central panel of the front board but not too bad. The condition of the pages is equally very good. Generally bright and clean though with foxing to the prelims of Vol 1 Genesis to Lamentations and with some foxing to the margins of some engravings - a small minority. Vol 2 Ezekiel to Revelation has a closed tear to the bottom of approx 2.5 cm / 1 inch with a neat archival tape repair. This book includes The Apocrypha. The Gustave Dore Bible is a highly collectable work and they are unusual to find in this very good condition. The register of Marriages Births and Deaths is empty which means it could be used as a family bible. This one of the better condition Dore Bibles I have seen in early edition in Very Good condition. Later editions had a reduced number of engravings since some were considered too lurid for polite Victorian tastes. A lovely piece of history. 39cm tall 33cm wide across the boards Vol 1 9cm thick Vol 2 7.5cm thick. These books weigh around 25 kilos when packed. Insured shipping free worldwide. Contemporary Scottish black morocco spine in six compartments red morocco lettering pieces in the second others with gilt saltire with small flowers covers framed with distinctive interlocking tool impressed individually. Red and black PRINTED book labels of Elisabeth Hall dated 1769 pasted onto "Dutch gilt" endpapers. Some modern glue is visible in the inner hinge of the lower cover of vol. 2. Two original binder's blanks at the front and back of both volumes. Suitable for exhibition and study. This well preserved set of Scottish bindings is further distinguished by FOUR copy-specific letterpress bookplates printed in red and black no doubt in Scotland which reads in full: "Elisabeth Hall Her Bible. 20th June. MDCCLXIX." Concerning this printed bookplate it would appear that the present volumes contain the only known impressions of it thereby meriting inclusion in ESTC and elsewhere. The tools on the front cover of the bindings have not been matched with published examples but the spine treatment and endpapers are decidedly Scottish. That the Psalms were printed in Edinburgh Alexander Kincaid 1763 leads us to the conclusion that the present bindings are not only Scottish but that the original owner of them Elisabeth Hall was certainly Scottish herself. John Archdeacon's 1767 Cambridge Bible is not in the National Library of Scotland. Unsurprisingly NLS has four copies of Alexander Kincaid's 1763 Psalms two of which are in the Bindings Collection: Bdg.s.8072 and Bdg.s.1002. John Archdeacon unknown books

Contemp. calf spines in 6 compartments with 2 labels some skilful repairs to corners and spine ends somewhat rubbed. Zurich Conrad Orell and Comp. 1755-56. First edition of the so-called "Ulrich-Bibel" an important new version of the Zurich bible. The editor was pastor at Grossmüster and was close to Pietism. This edition is one of the most carefully edited Bibles and comes with regard to the beauty of the printing close to that of Froschauer's publication. The text is based on the 1667 and 1724 editions; it was revised and adapted to the more wide-spread use of modern high German. Johann Caspar Ulrich 1705-1768 was in charge under the supervision of the Church Council. In the "Kurze Anzeige" at the beginning Johann Konrad Nüscheler gives a bibliography of Zurich bibles. Together with Johann Rudolf Ziegler he was also involed in the text revision. Illustrations were not originally planned but since many buyers regretted the lack of images as they were used in the Froschauer bibles so the publisher offered illustrations separately for sale which are often different to those in this present copy. The two pompous frontispieces by J. H. Holzhalb and the large head-piece to the dedication are original parts of the edition. In addition this copy is embellished with the engravings of Christian Weigel after Jan and Caspar Luyken originally published at Nuremberg as a plate work mounted and inserted. Each plate bears a four-line Latin and German epigram by the poet Samuel Faber 1657-1716 beneath the image. - Lacking Weigel's engr. title and plate 37 in the Old Testament and plates 101-108 in the New Testament. - Old name on flyleaf in vol. The Family Record leaves have extensive handwritten notes of the families of Gen. Joseph Badger Jr. Signed by him of Gilmanton Belmont NH father of Gov. Wm. Badger 1834-36. & Charles Jacobs of Gilmanton. Isaiah Thomas whom Benjamin Franklin called 'the Baskerville of America' was one of the notable publishers during the early days of the Republic.He made every effort to ensure accuracy of the text by comparing some thirty different editions and having the text carefully examined by several clergymen and others who compared it with eight Bibles - Herbert 1353." The First Illustrated Bible printed in America is the 1791 folio Bible by Isaiah Thomas "The most sumptuous American Bible of the eighteenth century" : thus this quarto-sized version of that work is the Second Illustrated Bible printed in America and the first Royal Quarto Bible in English published in American both editions were announced as "completed" on the same date altho vol. 2 of the folio was still in progress. Rumball-Petre 172; Sabin 5173 variant; O'Callaghan pp. 40-42; Hills 30. Evans 23185 states that some copies were issued with no Concordance and 48 additional plates. This state however has only two copperplates as frontispieces of the 50 copperplate engravings from the folio edition plates 29 & 48 . Included are 200 pages of Tables Apocrypha and Family Records Index etc. The subscription price was $7 but half the price could be paid in wheat rye Indian corn butter or pork! It is believed that 1500 copies of each format were printed. William Slater or Slatyer 1587-1647 whose Psalmes or songs of Sion: turned into the language of a strange land 1631 "was on 9 July 1631 ordered to be burned. Summoned before the court of high commission on 20 October Slatyer confessed that he had 'added thereunto a scandalous table to the disgrace of religion and to the encouragement of the contemners thereof'; judging from an annotated copy of the work dated 1642 this probably consisted of a list of popular tunes to which the psalms might be sung" ODNB He was also editor of The Psalmes of David in 4 languages 1643 "a high quality edition containing both words and music the latter principally by Thomas Ravenscroft". 1700557661700. Very good-. Small octavo 14.1 by 8.5 cm. Manuscript in black and brown ink; 18-20 lines per page; text in vocalized Hebrew. 6 title and editor's preface 146 12 blank 10 notes. Lacks the first leaf which has been supplied in manuscript by a later owner. 19th-century limp morocco rubbed at extremities gilt dentelles marbled endleaves. Faint dampstain along bottom margin occasional smudges and mild stains else very good with crisp text. Early modern transcription of the Hebrew version of the Gospel of Matthew published in 1551 at Paris by Martin le Jeune with notes at the rear likely the work of a student. This edition was prepared by Jean Cinqarbres Quinquarboreus; 1514-1587 who jointly held the chair of King's Professor of Hebrew Literature at the University of Paris with Jean Mercier d. 1570. Lapide describes this as a "literal" edition and notes that the learned French bibliographer and father of the Oratory Jacques Le Long regarded it as the "true and authentic Gospel of Matthew." Like many of the surviving copies it lacks the Appendix which comprised the Seven Penetential Psalms Psalm CXIX Daniel's Prayer and the Ten Commandments. Apart from minor formatting changes e.g. breaks between chapters the text appears to be a faithful copy including vowel points and some of the additional cantillation marks the printed marginalia new Hebrew page numbers and Cinqarbres's dated preface. As the original version contains only 17 lines of text per page the transcription is not a page-for-page copy. Here the copiest appears quite fastidious in providing appropritate new catchwords! The Latin portion of the title however differs notably from the original which reads: Sanctum Domini nostri Iesu Christi Hebraicum Evangelium secundum Matthaeum. "In 1537 Sebastian MÃ¼nster published his Hebrew version of the Gospel of Matthew at Basel the first printed edition of the New Testament in the so-called 'mother tongue of the evangelist' as he states in his preface" Lapide. Like the Paris edition of Hebrew Matthew upon which the present copy is based MÃ¼nster entitled his version Torat ha-Mashiah The Teaching of the Messiah. While MÃ¼nster's version of Matthew was long believed to be based on the 14th-century Hebrew translation by the Jewish polemicist Shem Tov ben Isaac ibn Shaprut more recent scholarship has called this attribution into question. "There are medieval Hebrew forms of Matthew that most scholars think of as retroversions from the Greek of canonical Matthew often made to serve in arguments between Christians and Jews. However some claim that these texts are a guide to the original Hebrew of Matthew French scholars like J. Carmignac and M. Dubarle have contributed to this thesis. Still other scholars think they can reconstruct the original Hebrew or Aramaic underlying the whole or parts of the Greek text of canonical Matthew on the assumption that the original was in Semitic. The vast majority of scholars however contend that the Gospel we know as Matthew was composed originally in Greek and is not a translation of a Semitic original" Brown. Provenance and annotations: The copiest has added notes following the main text comprising a Seder shel Miqra / Ordo Bibliorum in which the tripartite division of the Scriptures according to Jewish tradition is described. Then follows several pages of Hebrew terminology with biblical references and definitions in Latin. Along with one or two references to rabbinic literature an erudite reference to the Passover Haggadah notes Rabbi Judah's grouping of the ten plagues into three acronyms. At the head of the leaf inserted after Cinqarbres' preface is the note "When I bought this Mss. the first chapter from verse one unto verse 14 and part of verse 15. I filled in the missing verses.
