The 1611 He Bible constituted a distinct edition with the reading "and hee went into the citie" in Ruth 3:15. The second edition 1613 She Bible was printed in subsequent years 1613 1617 1634 1640/39 with the variant "and she went into the citie." The second edition is frequently found in a variant state with leaves mixed in from different years but most here appear to originate from 1617.</p><p>Arguably the most important book ever published in English. Its influence can best be summed up by G.M. Trevelyan who stated that "for every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Globe there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. The effect of the continual domestic study of the book upon the national character imagination and intelligence for nearly three centuries to come was greater than that of any literary movement in our annals or any religious movement since the coming of St. Augustine." Contemporary vellum spliced or splitting in some areas otherwise holding up well a robust volume. <br/><br/>La Sainte Bible printed by Louis and Daniel Elzevier of Amsterdam has been called without exception the most splendid French Bible ever printed Bibl. Sussexiana. However Brunet echoed by Graesse calls is très remarquable par sa belle éxecution typographique; mais la correction en a eté peu soignée et les notes ne sont pas estimées. A magnificent but not very correct edition. According to the catalogue of 1675 it was printed in four sizes of type Imperial France Real Veluws Real and Grand Mediaen. It was one of the few large-format productions of the Elzevier presses better known for their small Port-Royal New Testaments. The two printmakers who engraved Berchems designs for the Bible maps Abraham Blooteling 1640-1690 and Jan de Visscher 1632-1692 were highly respected artists who lived and worked in Amsterdam. These engravers must have been acquainted and had probably studied together in the workshop of Cornelis Visscher. Both most likely were selected or at least approved by Berchem as engravers of the map prints. Four of the five maps within the 1669 La Sainte Bible are ornamented with illustrations engraved from models by Berchem. Designs on the fifth map may also be by Berchem. The Great Elzevier Bible two-volume printing on fine paper: a spectacular printing of the French Geneva Bible in folio with full notes. The greatest achievement of the famed house of Elzevier and a serious contender for one of the finest Bibles in any language. 'Un des plus beaux monuments de la typographie elzevirienne . Édition exécutée avec un grand luxe typographique mais que l'on dit peu correcte' Willems Les Elzevier; Histoire et Annales Typographiques. Willems references the catalog of 1675 as offering three different paper options for this Bible: 'Imperiael coté 110 florins; Frans Real 56 florins; Veluws Real 50 florins; grand Mediaen 44 florins.' These latter three range from 430-44mm; our copy is the 'Imperiael' fine-paper edition without its original decklage now 460mm but came off the press at a full half meter. The Elzevier Bible was a decade-long production for which all stops were pulled out. First conceived by Louis Elzevier; although he retired from the press in 1665 his cousin Daniel's personal respect for him and regard for his contributions to this Bible led him to insist on retaining is former partner's name on the title page. The Elzeviers commissioned the Huegenot Father-Son team Samuel and Henri Marets to produce the ultimate French Geneva Bible. Using the 1552 de Hayes edition of Olivetan's French Bible first translated from the Greek and Hebrew originals for the French Protestants in 1535 they included all of the original Geneva notes along with translations of the Dutch notes printed in Dort 1637 as well as many other notes gleaned from other sources including their own original contributions. This astounding work of scholarship is matched by the frontispiece and greatly detailed maps four of which were newly commissioned by the Elzeviers from the great Dutch painter Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. The fifrth Jerusalem and the Temple was copied from the London Polyglot Bible of 1655. These were engraved by Amsterdam printmakers Abraham Blooteling and Jan de Vissche. All this alongside the extaordinary typographical work by Daniel Elzevier make this a truly special Bible. DETAILS: Folio 46 x 30cm. 16353642A very scarce edition of the Louvain version of the Bible printed in Troyes by Nicolas Oudot the younger of the two founder brothers of the dynasty of printers in Troyes. It is a small format printing consequently a fairly chunky book which is illustrated throughout with charming woodcut illustrations. The BN has a later edition published by Nicolas Oudot Troyes 1678 which is also the Louvain version edited by François Véron and revised by Antoine Girodon Chambers 1453. While this copy has suffered rather rough and ready solutions to maintaining its integrity - no easy matter considering its considerable girth - it remains an appealing object if not one in original condition. Internally it is fairly clean and the woodcut illustrations are charming.<br /><br /><i>Small 8vo 115 x 90 mm pp. xii 971 37 numerous part-page woodcut illustrations throughout the text lightly browned throughout</i> <i>in contemporary vellum covered with later marbled paper and cloth backing: a workaday and rather ugly solution but sound with early manuscript notes on the front endpaper and the ownership inscription of John Wasley on the rear endpaper.</i> <br /> Chez Nicolas Oudot, demeurant en la ruë nostre Dame
168827812<p><strong>1688 BIBLE Illustrated MAPS 2v SET Denis Amelote French NT Catholic Church </strong></p><p>Known for his treatises and essays on church history and important church figures Denis Amelote was a 17th-century Biblical scholar. His translation of the New Testament has maintained popularity even into the 20th-century mostly because of his commentary and referencing Greek manuscripts.</p><p>This 1688 edition was published in Paris by Francois Muguet and published by the authority of the Catholic Church and Pope Clement VIII. B2759A ESTC r23375 <br />The first printing of the Old Testament in Irish is usually known as 'Bedell's Bible'. William Bedell when consecrated Bishop of Kilmore in 1629 "found a deplorable state of things in his diocese. He observed with much regret that the English had all along neglected the Irish as a nation not only conquered but undisciplinable and that the clergy had scarce considered them as part of their charge but had left them wholly in the hands of their own priests without taking any other care of them but the making them pay their tithes". Disgusted by this un-Christian attitude Bedell interested himself in the Irish culture adopted simple Irish dress and totally eschewed the opulent life-style normal for seventeenth century bishops opposed corruption and tyranny where he found it sought the company of and accepted the hospitality of his catholic Irish neighbours and avoided that of the rich and not only learned the Irish language himself but insisted on its use by his Protestant diocesan clergy. His enthusiasm and sympathy for the Irish earned him their trust affection and respect; he became for them 'optimus anglorum' the best of the English and on his death during the bitter 1641-2 war he was paid the unprecedented honour of being given a military funeral by the local Irish chieftains.His most enduring achievement is the translation of Bible or more precisely the Old Testament into the Irish language. Bedell saw an Irish Bible as an essential element in bringing the Word of God to the people indeed the making available of the scriptures in the vernacular was a key and characteristic element of the Protestant project throughout Europe. He secured the services of competent persons Murtagh King and Dennis Sheridan to translate the Bible and he himself revised the whole comparing it with the Hebrew Greek and Latin so as to correct the errors of the English. He had got to the stage of making preparations for its printing in his own house but the war and his death in 1642 prevented that and for years his manuscript version of it passed through many hands until the famous Robert Boyle scientist philosopher and theologian heard of it later in the century.<br />Boyle born into a wealthy Co. Cork family had been taught Irish in his childhood both at home and at Eton. Boyle like Bedell was passionate about making the Scriptures available in vernacular languages. In 1680 he had a new Irish type manufactured by Joseph Moxon to enable the reprinting in 1681 of the New Testament in Irish first printed almost a century earlier and he resolved to print Bedell's manuscript also. When he obtained it it was in such "a confused heap pitifully defaced and broken" that it had to be reworked and parts of it retranslated. This task of re-editing the manuscript was undertaken by Narcissus Marsh Provost of Trinity College Dublin and a man who shared many of Bedell's attitudes. Marsh engaged as his collaborators Dr. Andrew Sall and Paul Higgins both good Irish scholars and both former Catholic priests. Marsh himself learned Irish to facilitate his task but his main editorial work was done on a retranslation of Bedell's work back into English that he had made for the purpose. When their work was complete Boyle who had initially offered to pay a quarter of the cost paid the whole bill and the book was printed by Everingham using the new Moxon Irish type. "The first sheet of Genesis was printed off in April and the Psalms were being printed in March 1685. The remainder of the sheets with the exception of the Apoctyphia which Boyle declined to print were run off before the end of 1685 which is the Imprint date of the Old Testament. . An intended preface seems not to have materialized" Maddison. It is sometimes stated that 500 copies were printed but to our knowledge no documentary evidence for this exists. Boyle had indeed contracted to print 500 of the New Testament of 1681 and the printer printed off at least another 180 so it may be supposed that the number of Old Testaments printed would have been similar. When Boyle in 1702 discovered that Irish was also the language of large parts of Scotland "he still had some copies of the Old Testament in Irish since distribution in Ireland had not succeeded so well as expected" Maddison. He subsequently sent the circa 80 remaining copies to Scotland together with the circa 150 remaining New Testaments.<br />It seems very likely given its early Scottish provenance that the present copy is one of those 80 copies sent to Scotland. Lawrence Colquhoun was the 1st Earl of Killermont ca.1682-1770. The armorial bookplate is that of his descendant Archibald Campbell Colquhoun c1755-1820 of Clathick and Killermont son of Agnes Colquhoun heiress of Killermont. He was Lord Advocate Sheriff of Perthshire and M.P. for Dumbartonshire. He adopted the additional name of Colquhoun on succeeding his mother at Killermont in 1804.Vide: R. E. W.
