1894132856New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers 1894. Octavo eleven inserted plates original pictorial terra cotta cloth front and spine panels stamped in black and gold. First edition. Six stories and three poems by a once-popular American author from Louisiana now mainly in the women's studies curriculum if not in the canon. All have rustic settings and dialect spelling. In this copy the story "Christmas Geese" p.145-179 is heavily marked in pencil with deletions and emendations to facilitate some sort of dramatic reading with added pictures. It is not known if these marks are in the hand of the author although it is known that she traveled widely in the 1890s as a platform entertainer giving oral presentations. Laid in is the calling card of John L. Foster. The author's second collection; the first edition is scarce. Wright III 5303. A novella six short stories and three poems by a popular American author who did not find favor with subsequent critics. All have rustic settings though in various parts of the country thus disqualifying the book as regionalistic and dialect spelling. The stories in this collection tend towards the heavy and melodramatic in tone. The author's second collection; the first edition is scarce. "Several of these tales show a little effort a little lack of truth. Possibly the reason is not far to seek. For the most part these are not stories of Negro life with the humor and pathos of which Mrs. Stuart is so intimately familiar. Of such tales however there is one and a very charming one - 'Duke's Christmas.' It seems to come like the narrative of Miss Murfree for instance of Miss Wilkins or Miss Jewett of a disposition to find a soul of good in things ugly if not evil ; and of a conviction that the more or less uncouth characters of which these stories tell are abundantly worth knowing. Such a disposition and conviction are natural in the art of a democratic age." - William Dean Howells in The Atlantic Monthly Nov. 1894 p. 706. Wright III 5303.
