Shillaber was an editor and humorist who used the pseudonym of his elderly woman character Ruth Partington in this collection of humorous pieces about patent medicines taking the waters at Saratoga organ grinders pets and other topics. Six stories and three poems by a once-popular American author from Louisiana now mainly in the women's studies curriculum if not in the canon. All have rustic settings and dialect spelling. In this copy the story "Christmas Geese" p.145-179 is heavily marked in pencil with deletions and emendations to facilitate some sort of dramatic reading with added pictures. It is not known if these marks are in the hand of the author although it is known that she traveled widely in the 1890s as a platform entertainer giving oral presentations. Laid in is the calling card of John L. Foster. The author's second collection; the first edition is scarce. Wright III 5303.
