1959158542New York: Inkweed Studios 1959. Vintage poster for the 1959 off-Broadway play which opened on July 15 1959 at the Living Theatre. Poster designed by Inkweed Studios with a label affixed to the recto stating showtimes. Presumably either unique or produced in very small quantity. Mounted on art board as issued and used.

Founded in 1951 by Beat poet Kabbalist and Lower East Side underground luminary Lionel Ziprin with his wife illustrator and dancer Joanne Ziprin Inkweed Studios was originally created to produce "studio cards"-greeting cards to rival the mass-produced cards produced by the Hallmark Company. While not financially successful Inkweed did produce many outstanding graphics such as the poster on offer here. The company also served as the launching pad for the graphic work of artists such as Harry Smith Jordan Belson Bruce Conner Barbara Remington and William Mohr.

Jack Gelber's landmark play within a play observes a producer and writer attempting to stage a production using "real" heroin addicts largely jazz musicians waiting for their score interspersed with jazz music. Notable not only for its honest depiction of addiction the play also radically re-imagined the relationship between audience and actor with actors utilizing the theatre's aisles as performance areas an actor presented as an audience member and actors remaining in character and panhandling during intermission. A key play in the history of American jazz and an evocative portrait and product of the Beat era. Winner of three Obie Awards including Best New Play Best All-Around Production and Best Actor for Warren Finnerty. Made into an equally groundbreaking and largely unrecognized motion picture in 1961 directed by Shirley Clarke and starring Finnerty and William Redfield.

13.75 x 21.75 inches archivally framed to 16.25 x 24.25 inches. Very Good plus with some light corner and edgewear a small chip to the bottom right corner and a small bruise to the mid-right edge. Inkweed Studios unknown

201611256Octon France: Verdigris Press 2016. One of 5 copies from a total edition of 12 all on BFK Rives tan paper. Page size: 9-7/8 x 6-1/4 inches; 16pp. Bound by Mark Lintott accordion style boards and Rothchild's hand-made pastepaper rose dots scattered on tan ground with occasional indigo dots; housed in custom-made paper over boards clamshell box paper on box has more blue than that on panels of book; title artist author publisher on spine title repeated on front cover of box Hand set and printed in Vendome type on an 1867 Albion press by Mark Lintott. Ms. Rothchild's elegant drypoint etchings were inspired the colophon reveals by her sketches of her model Monica. While a study of the female nude figure is a departure from her usual books Judith Rothchild succeeds admirably. The intimate views depicted here are a match for those of her more frequently-encountered still-life compositions. Verdigris Press unknown books
201110486Octon France: Verdigris Press 2011. Artist's book one of 4 deluxe copies from a total issue of 40 all on Hahnemulhe paper each copy signed by the artist Judith Rothchild and initialed by the author in pencil as is the numbering. Page size: 6-1/4 x 8-1/4 inches; 20pp; printed on 5 folios. Bound: loose as issued housed in grey wrappers printed in black the whole in custom-made burgundy paper over boards clamshell box with black paper edges title author artist and press printed in black on spine with exposed grey cloth hinges. The deluxe edition contains one of the 4 four original copper plates used for the stunning mezzotints of interior scenes by Ms. Rothchild. Also included in the deluxe copy is an original pencil and ink wash drawing. This interior scene is mounted into the inside front cover of the clamshell box with the original copper plate mounted into the rear inside cover. Both are "framed" with hand marbled paper in deep grey with white inset.
Seemingly a simple series of interiors accompanied by words about the spaces it is a very powerful "aide-memoire" - visualizing and verbalizing the power of rooms and the objects therein bathed in their own peculiar light - to elicit memories / sensations all but forgotten. The artist tells us that the images were made from drawings at a friend's apartment. The parents of her friend established a bilingual journal in Paris creating a literary circle with included Henry Miller and Lawrence Durrell. Temple friendship with the publishers dates from this time and endures through an almost familial relationship with their daughter the artist's friend whose apartment is depicted.
The original pencil and wash composition is of another location entirely. This is one of the public rooms in the Grand Hotel in Sete a port on the Mediterranean about one hour from Octon the home of Verdigris Press.
The text is hand set in Vendome romain and printed letterpress by Mark Lintott who also made the clamshell boxes. Each of the folios has been marbled in a most subtle shade of blue - delicate and yet full of life with swirls compelling one to open the folio to the mezzotint on the verso. This is a very beautiful book - elegant and restrained - just what one has come to expect from Judith Rothchild and Mark Lintott. Verdigris Press unknown books
19322866Szeged 1932. Fold out. In very good condtion. Design by George Buday Photos by Judit Karasz. Design by George Buday Photos by Judit Karasz. Fold out. 1 p. 30 x 40 cm English text and illustrations on the back. Kárász’s photographs explore the material qualities and structures of everyday things. Whether folded fabric parched soil or cotton wool the physical nature of the subject is the primary focus. Informed by her Bauhaus teacher László Moholy-Nagy she felt that photography could make tangible aspects of its subject matter that could not be detected by the eye alone. In each case the resulting image is carefully constructed from a delicate balance of light and shadow across the surface of the chosen material. Kárász studied under photographer Walter Peterhan. 131206
The First UK printing published by Collins in 1970. The correct first issue with no ISBN number to the printing details page or to the lower edge of the rear wrapper flap. The BOOK is in Very Good condition. Light handling marks to a handful of pages and some light toning to the text-block and page edges due to the quality of the paper stock used. Some very light spots creasing and age related markings in a few places. Original illustrated boards with some light toning and spotting to the edges in places. Free from inscriptions. The WRAPPER repeating the board-design is complete and is in Very Good condition. Slightly nicked with a little rubbing at the spine ends and corners. Small losses to the spine ends . Light creasing to the edges. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Colour-printed illustrations by the author throughout. An attractive copy of the author's increasingly elusive second book and the first title in the acclaimed 'Mog' series. ISBN numbers were introduced in 1970 and it seems that the publishers had to introduce this whilst the book was being printed. The subsequent second state printing of the first issue has the ISBN number present on the printing details page and to the lower edge of the wrapper front flap. The second state wrapper also has a different blurb format to both flaps. A scarce survivor. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
Collins, London hardcover
200613204Octon France: Verdigris 2006. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine in Fine Archival Box. Limited Edition. Hardcover. "The date of publication according to the artist and printer was Feb. 5 2006 which was the third anniversary of Colin Powell's speech to the UN Security Council. Parts of that speech are printed in black on the blood red recto of the rear free endpaper. 12 O'clock News was originally published in Geography III in 1976. Elizabeth Bishop's prose poem certainly surreal in outlook with a great sense of irony as well as parody takes a look at the author's desk top. but isolating images and viewing them as minutia. The results as detailed in Bishop's "new report" could not be any more wrong. The parallel with the American Secretary of State's speech at the U.N. is devastatingly obvious." artist statement.
