179121606Boston: I. Thomas and E.T. Andrews 1791. Fine Binding; Interior is Good/No Dust Jacket As Issued.
A SCARCE FEDERAL-ERA RELIGIOUS IMPRINT FROM THE WORKSHOP OF ISAIAH THOMAS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT AMERICAN PRINTER OF THE LATE 18TH CENTURY.

This 1791 Boston edition of Watts' seminal work was fundamental to American congregational singing reimagining the Hebrew Psalms for a contemporary Christian context. Despite internal flaws the book remains a tight square example of early American craftsmanship featuring the distinctive typography of the Thomas and Andrews partnership.

KEY FEATURES
Imprint: Boston: I. Thomas and E.T. Andrews 1791. Evans 23941.
Significance: Printed by Isaiah Thomas founder of the American Antiquarian Society and a central figure in Federal-era publishing.
Binding: Side-stitched and rebound in period-style full leather; four spine bands outlined in gilt with gilt-stamped titles.
Content: Includes the metrical Psalms followed by 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in three books with complete indexes.
Ads: Features a concluding advertisement for the 'Natural History of the Bible'.
Specs: 8vo; 8 by 5.25 inches / 227 pages.

CONDITION: Good -- Rebound in tight square leather; exterior shows minimal shelf handling wear. Interior is heavily toned throughout; title page has losses to the perimeter and the final six pages show evidence of an old dampstain. Lacking all blank preliminaries. Text remains clean and legible. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE --
Isaac Watts was the 'Father of English Hymnody' but his influence in the young United States was arguably even greater than in his native England. In the decades following the Revolution Watts' 'imitations' of the Psalms replaced the older rigid metrical versions like the Bay Psalm Book allowing American congregations to sing with a New Testament perspective. His work provided the soundtrack to the Second Great Awakening and remains the foundation of modern Protestant worship.

This particular artifact matters because it was produced by Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer Andrews. Thomas was not just a printer; he was the primary historian of the American press. Books from his Boston office during the Federal Period 1788-1800 were the standard of excellence for a nation struggling to define its own cultural and religious identity.

SUBJECTS: Isaiah Thomas Early American Printing Hymnology Protestant Worship Federal Period Boston Biblical Paraphrase Hymnody Sacred Music American Imprint Christian Devotional Literature.
