He is recognized as the Godfather of English Hymnody; many of his hymns remain in use today and have been translated into numerous languages.

Isaac Watts is credited by many with introducing hymns to the English churches when his Hymns and Spiritual Songs was first published in 1707. They are extensively used today due to his poetic gifts but also because he interpreted the Old Testament using knowledge of the New. This set an example for later hymn writers.

Watts also wrote a textbook on logic which was particularly popular and highly regarded. Its full title was Logick or The Right Use of Reason in the Enquiry After Truth With a Variety of Rules to Guard Against Error in the Affairs of Religion and Human Life as well as in the Sciences. This was first published in 1724 and it was printed in twenty editions. Michael Farrady cites it as a source of inspiration.

CONDITION REPORT

The book is in Fair condition. Modern plain wrappers and stitching. 54pp. Light browning Very Good.

The publisher Daniel Eaton was a persistent challenger of British efforts to curtail speech critical of the Crown and government. He had been arrested and acquitted for publishing Paine's 'Rights of Man" and then for publishing a comparison of the King of England to a Game Cock.
This pamphlet's thesis is that "Britain is on the brink of ruin. . . Corruption and distress walking hand in hand through the country; and war eternally compleating the triumvirate of despotism. . . That government is near its end when having once depended upon the free temper of the people they endeavor to reign by their own extent of power." The author writes "on the extravagance of the present reign" and its corrupting effects. He predicts "commercial bankruptcy! a national famine! and an unavoidable Revolution!"
OCLC 221410570 4- Columbia Baylor two in England as of January 2024. 'Like Vitruvius and Alberti before him Ware arranged his treatise in ten books. Having defined the most commonly used architectural terms he devotes the rest of book one to a discussion of materials. Book two is divided into five sections: the first on location; the second on the functional parts of a building and the third fourth and fifth on the orders. Book three begins the practical advice on house construction. Books four five and six deal with doors windows and interior ornament book seven with exterior ornament and garden buildings book eight with bridges. Book nine consists of an interesting return to what Ware calls 'the construction of elevations upon the true principles of architecture' . It is in the nature of an appendix to the whole and allows Ware to write cuttingly of modern practices. Book ten is a brief introduction to mathematics and mensuration . '. Millard." Watt's interest in the principles and practice of domestic architecture almost to the exclusion of all other building types. Ware thus implicitly supported two principal components of Colen Campbell's program of architectural reform set out over 40 years earlier in Vitruvius Britannicus: restoration of "Ancient" authority and confidence that Britain's future architectural progress lay in domestic building." In early 20th century cloth; lacking the advertisements called for by Howes; all plates are present. Bindings are a little worn at the spine ends with some fraying to head of the spine of Volume I otherwise only light edgewear; endpaper split at the hinges but have been discreetly and neat reglued and are strong; early pencil markings—mostly small hands with pointing fingers in the margins; list of places with pencil check marks probably more recent; light and foxing throughout but more so around the folding plates and maps even here it is not very distracting. This is a fairly nice copy in 20th century binding of a very good early travel narrative.

Originally issued by Stockdale in 1799 this is an early edition of a frequently reprinted travel narrative this edition with striking views of Niagra Falls Hudson River Natural Bridge in Virginia and more. His attitude is indicated by his closing remarks that he left the United States 'without a sigh and without entertaining the slightest wish to revisit ti.'
