17928953Newburyport MA: John Mycall 1792. Hard Cover. Good binding. 12mo. 288 pp. Early printing. Originally issued with Watts's "Hymns and Spiritual Songs" not present here though the Psalms are complete. In recent cloth with tasteful printed paper label. Only light soiling to the binding; contents toned and foxed; a few leaves with some wear and chipping to the margins or corners; a solid copy with an illegible early owner name "Burlington August 1818 / University of Vermont."

Mycall's revision of Watts's psalter was first issued in 1781. In it Mycall removed all references to Great Britain and King George exchanging them with references to the nascent United States—a significant declaration in its own right and one that really captures the fervor of the revolutionary American. Ezra Stiles that monumental American theologian and president of Yale describes Mycall's edition in his diary entry for 8 December 1781 calling it "well adapted to the Church in America." Though there are several psalms that were revised by Mycall Stiles specifically points to 75th Psalm titled: "Power and government from God alone Applied to the glorious revolution in America July 4th 1776." Verse 2 reading: "America was was sic doom'd a slave / Her frame dissolv'd her fears were great; / When God a right'ous Council gave / To bear the pillars of the State." An early but post-revolution imprint of this important revolutionary psalter. Evans 23106; ESTC W4416; The Literary Diary of Ezra Stiles. New York 1901. Vol II p. 571. John Mycall unknown

172646082
London : for J. Clark & R. Hett; E. Matthews and R. Ford 1726. First edition. A popular and much reprinted text with very clear expositions and worked examples of the problems and principles intended to lead on "to the higher speculations of the great Sir Isaac Newton and his followers". Dedicated to John Eames 1686-1744 recently elected to the Royal Society on Newton's recommendation and himself a serious scholar of physics. "The same perspicuity of thought and ease of expression which distinguish his other works running through the whole of this I don't question but the world will meet with equal pleasure and satisfaction in the perusal" from Eames's preface. Watts was perhaps better known as a hymn-writer but was also the author of such works as "Logic or The Right Use of Reason in the Enquiry After Truth" 1724 which became the standard text on logic at Oxford Cambridge Harvard and Yale. Post 8vo 196mm x 16mm 2xiv220xiipp. Title-page in red and black six folding plates. Contemporary full calf silk headbands; rebacked labelled banded and gilt to style; sprinkled edges; some light wear; neat repair to title-page not affecting lettering; some occasional internal marking and spotting; small ink stain to fore-edge but a good sound and attractive copy of an important and accomplished work particularly good on the use of maps and globes.
London : for J. These missing images are Abraham smashing the idols of his father Moses receiving the Ten Commandments a Mount Sinai Moses and Aaron coming to Pharaoh and the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. These include the "Gevurot Hashem" from the Maharal of Prague Judah Loew ben Bezalel writings by Rabbi Moshe Alshich and "Olelot Ephraim" a collection of ethical homilies by Rabbi Shlomo Ephraim Luntschitz. However Abravanel's commentary is present following Yishtabach through the end of the Seder and in the initial six-leaf section preceding the text of the Passover seder which discusses the laws of Passover.

This copy is lacking the original engraved map of the Holy Land at the rear as it was originally issued. Unassuming modest brown leather over boards; four raised bands to spine five compartments. Printed in Greek type with the Latin translation on the facing page. Extremities rubbed some scuffing some chipping to the spine ends. Internally very clean and unmarked with tight sound binding. Glasgow born Robert Foulis 1707-1776 was a Scottish printer whose work had considerable influence on the printers and publishers of his time. Initially apprenticing as a master barber he was encouraged to take up the trade of printing and bookselling at the suggestion of his friend Francis Hutcheson of the University of Glasgow. Beginning in 1741 Foulis engaged in the selling of books in Glasgow and it was very shortly thereafter in 1742 that he set up his own press. He was appointed printer to the University of Glasgow in 1743 and in the same year produced the first Greek book printed in Glasgow the Peri herm neias in both Greek and Latin of the pseudo-Demetrius Phalereus. "Five years later he went into partnership with his brother Andrew and by 1775 had produced more than 500 separate editions including an edition of Homer 4 vol. folio 175658 Callimachus small quarto 1755 Thomas Grays Poems quarto 1768 Herodotus Thucydides and Xenophon with Latin translations and one of the first Scottish editions of Shakespeare. The Foulises best works were distinguished by their excellent layout legibility and accuracy." EB April 2019. Some of the credit for their achievement is attributable to the renowned type-maker and punch-cutter Alexander Wilson from whom they purchased their types. Robert Foulis died on 2 June 1776 in Edinburgh.

In Aedibus Academicis Excudebat Robertus Foulis Academiae Typographus. hardcover
