Very good condition externally like new! Complete with 16 plates including a large foldout map of the United States. Weld was an English explorer and topographer; he first published this popular work in 1799 only a year before this third edition in the interest of research for Irish immigration prospects. Good. <br /> <br /> This pamphlet "also contains Manassah Cutler's charge to the good doctor about to become Ohio's pioneer preacher" Eberstadt and "the Proceedings of the Council called to ordain Dr. Story" Thompson. Indian Mounds are described in detail and their purpose discussed. "Pages 34-36 are principally devoted to the Antiquities of Marietta" Evans. <br /> Daniel Story 1756-1804 uncle of Justice Joseph Story and brother of the author was "the earliest Protestant preacher of the gospel in the territory northwest of the Ohio except the Moravian missionaries was a native of Boston and graduated at Dartmouth in 1780. The directors and agents of the Ohio Company having passed a resolution in 1788 for the support of the gospel and the teaching of youth Rev. Manassah Cutler one of the company's directors in the course of that year engaged Mr. Story then preaching at Worcester to go to the West as a chaplain to the new settlement at Marietta. In the spring of 1789 he commenced his ministerial labors as an evangelist visiting the settlements in rotation. During the Indian war from 1791 to 1795 he preached during most of the time in the northwest block-house of Campus Martius. <br /> "When the war was over Mr. Story preached at the different settlements; but as there were no roads he made these pastoral visits by water in a log canoe propelled by stout arms and willing hearts. In 1796 he established a Congregational church composed of persons residing at Marietta Belpre Waterford and Vienna in Virginia. Mr. Story died December 30 1804 at the age of 49 years. Very good in full medium brown diced calf with a professional reback of the spine upon which has been placed a gilt on red leather spine label and gilt tooling. The front and rear boards have contemporary diced leather within a gilt double border. The end sheets are contemporary marbled paper. A small octavo measuring 7 5/8 by 4 5/8 inches lacking the 1/2 title page as is typical with this title. The tips of both boards have been bumped with the leather worn through to the underlying material. Part I of the book contains The Life of Mr. Isaac Walton in lxxvi 76 pages followed by Walton's The Complete Angler containing 262 pages a page of explanation and three plates of illustrations as well as two music plates facing pages 204 and 262. Part II of the book contains Some Account of the Life and Writings of Charles Cotton Esq. xxxii 32 pages; followed by Part II of The Complete Angler of 111 pages after which is an index. Two octavo volumes bound in one: 2v412-1893; 2v210-1924 pp. Volume two has a separate title-page at the beginning and a publisher's prospectus dated Boston 15 April 1748 and advertisements at the end. Pages 63 and 183 of v. 2 are misnumbered 67 and 185 respectively. In a worn contemporary full leather binding with corners rounded and missing a piece of leather on lower board. The bookblock shows evidence of early repair having been resewn in a couple of places with the front fly-leaves and title-page resewn as well. The edge-chipped fly-leaves have early ink ownerships Bridget Taylor 1788 and John Walton 1777. The text leaves are lightly thumbed at fore-margin with occasional foxing and/or light soiling. One leaf I8 has loss at the inside bottom corner just touching the initial or final letter of type in the lines near the bottom of the page. Several of the leaves have dog-eared corners. Two volume set. 427 375pp. Octavo 22 cm Nicely rebound in tan 3/4 quarter calf over the original marbled leather boards. Backstrip has red and black gilt stamped leather labels with gilt rules. Floral gilt stamped pattern to the rest of the backstrip. The front board of volume 1 is nearly detached and the front free endpaper map and title page are detached but present. Both volumes internally clean. Advertisements have been removed from both volumes. The large folding map 'Part of the United States of North America' measures 48 cm by 43 cm and is present at the front of volume one. Large map shows America as it was then known with the western edge being Detroit and Kentucky. The state lines are hand colored. A few short closed tears at the folds. Volume one also contains seven views two plans Washington and Quebec and a map of upper and lower Canada. Volume two contains five views four of these are about Niagara Falls. Nice early American travel narrative by this Irish writer and artist. Howes W235. Sabin 192541. Weld's Travels Through the States of North America and the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada was an instant success. It went through several editions and was translated into several different languages. It is worth noting that Weld's work is more favorable towards Canada than it is towards the United States.
