1727026143London: J. Tonson 1727. First Edition. Quarto. 12 327 pages 18 leaves of tables one folding errata mounted to bottom of the second page of contents verso. This volume includes plate 18 which was done by Sir Isaac Newton near the end of his life Wallis 'Newton & Newtoniana' #357 while he was Master of the British Mint 1700-1727; During Newton's tenure at the mint he issued at least thirteen reports which like this one are all rare. Table 34 which is a fold-out of plate 18 is among his very last original works accomplished in his lifetime. While Newton is certainly best known for his scientific work in mathematics and physics a large part of his working life was his time as Master of the Mint; in fact his precise measurements enabled savings in the minting process. The previous system had not been uniform his keen measurements enabled an exact weight in determining the number of grains in an ounce of gold with precision had not been available previous to his work. The table is also known in Scottish bibliographies for the section on Scottish Weights and Measurements. Bound in full calf ruled in gilt earlier and fine rebacking decoratively stamped in gilt renewed endpapers all edges red wear to corners some toning. A very good copy. J. Tonson unknown books

His first published work his epitomized Euclidis Elementorum libri XV probably written by early 1654 is designed as a quadrivium undergraduate text with emphasis on its deductive structure rather than on its geometrical content its sole concessions to contemporary mathematical idiom being its systematic use of Oughtred's symbolism and a list'ex P. The Report recommends changes in the penal law; not Hayne assures from "sympathy with the spirit of indiscriminate and sweeping innovation which to some extent is the characteristic of the age and which absolutely runs riot in many of the States of this Confederacy." South Carolina has a low crime rate: "more than half of our population and the portion amongst whom from their position crime would naturally most abound are slaves who are kept in order without a resort to the Courts." But he fears an "alarming" rise in crime in Charleston. Urging greater efficiency "in detecting crime" he recommends employing prosecutors in each district and "physicians for post mortem examinations in murder cases."
Hayne wants to streamline outmoded judicial procedures allow appeals "in cases not capital only on cause shown" to curtail the power of pardon with standards to guide issuance of pardons to curb the most wretched prison conditions particularly housing "the arrested debtor and the innocent witness" with "the convicted felon"; and to provide separate cells at night and employ prisoners in shoemaking and other useful tasks. An Appendix prints valuable data on the prison population of South Carolina.
III Turnbull 143. Cohen 4567. Not in Harv. Law Cat. or Marke. OCLC 8348549 3- Harvard U Chi. U SC as of August 2020. "Isaac Smith Kalloch accused of adultery in this prosecution was a Baptist clergyman and was supported by the trustees of his church throughout this affair. . The jury could not reach a verdict in the case which was tried in the Massachusetts Court of Common Pleas Criminal Session in Cambridge Massachusetts" Cohen. Kalloch was defended by the eminent lawyer and politician Richard Henry Dana Jr. 1815-1882. The trial resulted in a hung jury. Kalloch later moved to San Francisco and became that city's mayor in 1879. The Full Report includes the judge's charge but not the jury's final verdict. Kalloch was acquitted. He moved to San Francisco where he continued to generate controversy by skirting the bounds of decency. When he decided to run for mayor of San Francisco in 1879 he came under attack from the San Francisco Chronicle's editor-in-chief Charles de Young who was backing another candidate. DeYoung hoping to end Kalloch's campaign accused the minister of having an affair. Kalloch responded by claiming that De Young's mother ran a brothel. In response DeYoung ambushed Kalloch on a street and shot him twice. Kalloch survived the wounds. Due in part to the sympathy of voters he was elected the 18th Mayor of San Francisco.
