In addition to being a physicist mathematician and natural philosopher Sir Isaac Newton was something of a Biblical scholar as well as shown by the present exegesis on apocalyptic texts. His analysis generally reads as being practical in nature as the New Catholic Encyclopedia X 428 says "Newton's writings on apocalyptical prophecies were not mystical or millenarian in any sense but more exercises in deciphering cryptograms." They comport with our sense of him as someone who believed in the scientific method!
"A new edition with the citations translated and notes by P. 186014804Charleston: Evans & Cogswell 1860. 23 1 pp. Disbound light spotting and some pages tanned. Good.

This 1860 Association Tract contrasts the New York Tribune's ugly distorted view of the South with the "cool-headed sensible unimpassioned" views of South Carolina's Senator Hammond. Tracing the intractable conflict between North and South to the country's birth the author asserts "It is a great mistake to assign the election of Lincoln as the CAUSE for a disruption of the Federal Government. It is but the occasion." Secession and a separate Southern slave-holding Confederacy are passionately urged.
The last page unnumbered prints the 'Constitution of 1860 Association' whose purpose is "promoting resistance by the slaveholding States to the aggressions of the non-slaveholding States." This is one of two 1860 Charleston issues.
III Turnbull 306 different imprint. Not in LCP. Evans & Cogswell unknown books
18577467New York: Harper & Bros. 1857. First edition. 8vo 605 pp. with 2 colored maps one folding and one double-page. Numerous wood-cuts throughout some of which are full-page. Harvey Gardiner says of Holton's book in his introduction to the reprint: "New Granada is the fullest and best-written assessment of that country at mid-century by a foreign observer. In 1852 the bespectacled bachelor botanist carrying two bales of paper for drying plants but no passport for himself first glimpsed a tropical landscape. For twenty unhurried months on itineraries of his own choosing he traveled widely visiting many areas more than once. When he bade farewell to New Granada in mid-May 1854 his luggage contained approximately 1800 botanical specimens a diary crowded with details and vast quantities of data concerning political subdivisions mail routes altitude climate weights and measures etc." He style is full of wry Yankee humor as well which make it a good read. The appendices are detailed and in themselves constitute a gazetteer of Colombia. Much was left out of the reprint inc. the maps appendices illustrations etc. Binding is contemporary 3/4 calf over marble boards; very clean text and maps. Very good copy.

Harper & Bros. hardcover books

1969571201969. An interesting letter from Singer on a 5.5- by 7.75-inch sheet on personalized stationery dated Oct. 22 1969 to Mr. Don Gold. Singer writes that he remembers having lunch with Gold who apparently wants to become Singer's new literary agent. "As things are now my publisher Mr. Straus is my agent as far as translations and theatrical presentations are concerned. They have done quite well and it would be very difficult for me to get another agent suddenly." He writes that there is always the possibility he may change agents. "As a matter of fact my publisher has done a lot for me in the literary field but not too much in selling my works to the movies which may be my fault not his." He writes he may call Gold in the future and wishes him well in his new job. A very interesting insightful letter from Singer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978. Letters by Singer are uncommon!. Very nice condition few minor corrections by Singer in text. unknown books
