Woodward according to his friend Henry Angelo was the son of a land agent and spent his youth in a country town where nothing was less known than everything pertaining to the arts. 'A caricaturist in a country town' said Mustard George 'like a bull in a china shop cannot live without noise; so having made a little noise in my native place I persuaded my father to let me seek my fortune in town.' Thanks to a small allowance from his father supplemented by his own earnings George was able to enjoy life in his own Bohemian fashion and ultimately took up his quarters at the 'Brown Bear' Bow Street where he was able to study the inhabitants of the roundhouse and the regular attendants at the police-court. At the 'Brown Bear' he died suddenly departing in character with a glass of brandy in his hand and was long mourned by his tavern associates. In his Eccentric Excursions which appeared in volume form in 1796 the designs engraved by Isaac Cruikshank there are several domestic subjects such as The Polite Congregation Showing Family Pictures and The Formal Introduction. Among other popular designs by Woodward are Raffling for a Coffin The Club of Quidnuncs Babes in the Wood A Goldfinch and his Mistress.and a series called Six Ways of Carrying a Stick. The majority are marred by extravagant hideousness but Angelo was of opinion that 'had this low humourist studied drawing and been temperate in his habits such was the fecundity of his imagination and perception of character that he might rivalled even Hogarth" Paston Social Caricature in the Eighteenth Century pp. 137-138.

Gordon BC-26; Widener 207; Not in Abbey or Tooley. The commentaries elucidating the otherwise rather obscure text were written by Isaac and John Tzetzes Byzantine scholars who lived in Constantinople in the 12th century. Alexandra was first published in 1513 by Aldus Manutius with texts by Pindar Callimachus Dionysius Periegetes the present one is the first separate edition of the text the second edition overall and also the first with the commentaries by the Tzetzes-brothers.

The second part of the book is a lengthy political decapentasyllabic verse John Tzetzes’ most important work the Variarum historiarum liber Book of Histories or the so-called Chiliades edited Nikolaus Gerbel. Chiliades is a collection of literary historical theological and antiquarian miscellanies whose chief value consists in the fact that it to some extent makes up for the loss of works that were then accessible to Tzetzes.

. Handsome edition of the first translation of the Hebrew Bible by an American Jew now known as the Leeser Bible. A prolific and ambitious religious leader Isaac Leeser had a "monumental" impact on the American Jewish community ANB. He elevated the status of Jewish religious leaders advocated for Jewish day schools and helped to established Maimonides College the first rabbinical school in the United States. He also taught and published extensively in vernacular English and organized the first American Jewish Publication Society in 1845 making Jewish scriptures and religious education texts broadly accessible to Anglophone Jews. The Leeser Bible was first published in 1853-54 at a time when many Anglophone Jews had to read the Hebrew Bible in the King James Version of the Hebrew Bible; Leeser provided a translation free of the influence of American Christianity. His translation "remained the standard Jewish translation of the Bible in North America for over 60 years" Fischel & Pinsker Jewish-American History and Culture p.349. This copy from the 1858-9 second edition with an extended nineteenth- and twentieth-century provenance. 1730187897London: Printed for William Innys 1730. The definitive edition of Newton's second great work Fourth edition the final edition to be revised and approved by Newton himself. The Opticks is Newton's definitive study of light the basis for the corpuscular theory of light rays that remained dominant into the 19th century. The Opticks's greatest achievement is showing that colour is a mathematically definable property. Newton demonstrates that white light is a mixture of infinitely varied coloured rays and that each ray is definable by the angle through which it is refracted. Other topics include colour circles theories of the rainbow and the phenomenon now known as Newton's rings. In his later years Newton made a sustained effort to tidy up his scientific legacy. This edition of the Opticks was published three years after his death by his long-time publisher drawing on corrections "by the Author's own Hand" preface. In those three years Newtonian devotees had published the Optical Lectures 1728 that he had delivered at Cambridge in the 1660s making public a work that he had only circulated in manuscript among close friends. The Lectures employed a more mathematical analysis of colour theory than did the Opticks and Innys' fourth edition harmonizes the two works by cross-referencing philosophical propositions in the latter with geometrical demonstrations in the former. Octavo 195 x 123 mm pp. viii 382 2. Complete with terminal advertisement leaf and 12 folding plates. Wood-engraved initials head- and tailpieces. Twentieth-century calf spine ruled and decorated in blind and with red morocco label marbled endpapers edges sprinkled red. 1838117632Paris: l'Imprimerie royale 1838. The classic treatment of the early history and doctrine of the Druze of Lebanon First edition of "one of de Sacy's principal works the classical treatment of the early history and doctrine of the Druze" which took more than 40 years to complete Daftary The Assassin Legends: Myths of the Ismailis p. 132. "The Druze religion. was initially an Isma'ili schismatic movement organized during the final years of the Fatimid caliph al-Hakim's reign 996-1021. But in time the Druzes came to represent a separate religious community beyond the confines of Isma'ilism or perhaps even Shi'i Islam. De Sacy's study of the Druzes dated back to the early 1790s. As in other areas of his scholarly endeavours de Sacy began his study of the Druzes on the basis of their own literature a sacred scripture consisting mainly of the writings and letters of the founders of the Druze religion notably Hamza and al-Muqtana" ibid. De Sacy 1758-1838 is remembered as "a monumental figure in the development of oriental studies in France" Atabey. Uncommon: six copies only listed at auction in the last 50 years including two at the Aboussouan sale in 1993 and the Atabey copy in 2002. 2 vols octavo 215 x 132 mm. Isaac Weld 1774-1856 left Dublin for Philadelphia in 1795 and "accompanied by a faithful servant sometimes on horseback sometimes on foot or in a canoe he made his way often under the guidance of Native Americans through the vast forests and along the great rivers. He narrowly escaped shipwreck on Lake Erie and experienced all the adventure incident to passing through an unsettled country while in the towns he mixed in the best society and had the privilege of meeting George Washington" ODNB. Aside from the attractive folding map the work includes plans of Washington DC and Quebec; maps of Canada and the Niagara Falls; three views of the Falls; and an illustration of an "American stage waggon" leaving a staging post. The work proved popular going through four editions by 1807 and being translated into French German and Dutch. 184141441Charleston S. C. : Levin & Tavel 1841. 1st American Edition Original Publisher's Cloth Small 8vo 2 236 pages followed by several unnumbered pages of publisher's advertisements. Singerman 0761 Rosenbach 483.

Jacob Rader Marcus the dean of historians of American Jewish history suggests in his work UNITED STATES JEWRY 1776-1985 Detroit 1989 that "The motive that prompted Nathaniel Levin and a Charleston associate to reprint an English translation of the sermons of Gotthold Salomon was apologetic. The book was Twelve Sermons Delivered in the New Temple of the Israelites at Hamburgh. The Hamburg temple in Germany was a liberal Jewish synagog one of the first in Europe.
An English translation had been made of the sermons at London in 1839 by Anna Maria Goldsmid the daughter of Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid the Anglo-Jewish emancipator and religious liberal. The American reprint appeared two years later.
Both editions were intended not only to edify Jews but also to interest and attract non-Jews. It was Levin's hope that these sermons would remove unjust prejudices against the Jew and would present 'the lofty character of the Israelite in its true colors.' A book of this sort would help the Jews put their best foot forward."
Interestingly this 1st American edition of Twelve Sermons contains a new preface extolling the religious liberty of America and highlighting the refuge it afforded to the Jews. The new preface is merely signed "L" certainly referring authorship by Isaac Leeser and further supported by the fact that volume is preceded by two pages of advertisements for works by Leeser even though his works had no connection to the Charleston Publisher of this work.
That Leeser who would become American Orthodoxy's greatest warrior against the Reform would offer a preface to and advertise his works in a collection of sermons from the breakaway Liberal Hamburg Temple in Germany suggests that he did not yet see the coming threat from the Reform movement.
At the time of printing in Charleston Gustavus Poznanski 5 years into his term as rabbi and still somewhat traditional was just starting to make what felt like radical reforms as he "excised the Resurrection of the Dead and abolished the Second day of festivals five years before the same was done at the Breslau conference."

America's first Reform import from Germany and it's first synagogue established as Reformed Har Sinai Congregation in Baltimore was still a year away from birth. Indeed the official term "Reform" did even come into use to describe Liberal Judaism except as a general adjective until 1845 even in Germany.
Leeser's involvement in this publication merits further study as it is not mentioned in the bibliographies nor in Sussman's comprehensive "Isaac Leeser and the Making of American Judaism."
Indeed in the 1840s at the time of this printing "there was a major split in Congregation Beth Elohim which many historians of American Jewish history see as the beginning of the American Reform movement. The conflict began after the introduction of an organ into the synagogue when it was rebuilt following a fire in 1840.
The series of conflicts between Reform and Traditionalist elements in Beth Elohim resulted in a complicated dispute between the President who favored Reform and the Board of Trustees which was controlled by the Traditionalists. The President refused to call the Board of Trustees to meet as was required by the synagogue's constitution because he knew they would admit new traditionalist members and obtain control of the congregation. The Board ignored him and met on their own a move which the Reformers challenged in court. The resulting case State v. Ancker has become known as an early example of U. S. Courts refusing to intervene in complex religious questions" Wikipedia.

Salomon 1784-1862 was the preacher of the new Reform Hamburg Temple. His "sermons modeled like those of other preachers on Protestant examples were praised by his contemporaries notably H. Heine." Goldsmid 1805-1889 a daughter of Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid was a London author poetess translator educator and communal worker JE. Includes bibliographical references.
SUBJECTS: Jewish sermons. 1910394188Bridgeport Connecticut 1910. Very Good. A small collection of four glass lantern slides 21 black and white photographs and additional ephemera from the library of Connecticut phycologist Isaac Holden founding editor and contributor to the Phycotheca Boreali-Americana: A Collection of Dried Specimens of the Algae of North America. The collection consists of miscellaneous materials documenting two of Bridgeport’s leading manufacturers Isaac Holden and William Skilling Mills and includes evidence of their ties to circus impresario P.T. Barnum. Two of the glass slides are partially damaged else very good overall.

Born in 1832 Holden graduated from Dartmouth College and began his career as a teacher specializing in the preparation of young men for college and scientific schools. He gave up teaching in 1872 to join the Wheeler & Wilson Company in Bridgeport manufacturers of sewing machines becoming Vice President and in charge of the business until his death in 1903. His interest in botany was lifelong and he spent the last fifteen years of his life researching and collecting marine algae at Sea Island Park on the Connecticut coast and Long Island Sound as well as the inland fresh water streams and lakes.

Among the photographs are several family portraits including the patriarch of the Mills family Dwight Phelps Mills and images of various family members and friends out and about in Bridgeport and Naugatuck. Also included are photographs of rugged landscapes and rocky coastline including Australia and Maine. The four glass lantern slides consist of a view of P.T. Barnum's elephants being paraded across Bridgeport’s new iron draw bridge 1888 and three unidentified portraits: a young woman in ballet slippers resembling one of P.T. Barnum's Circassian beauties; a very old woman with a remarkable furrowed face; and a very young boy.

The ephemera consists mostly of printed and engraved cards etc.: Rewards of Merit religious and calling cards some of which are inscribed and woven keepsakes. Of special interest are several calling cards and identified family photographs that link the Holden family to the Stanley Brothers of Maine the earliest manufacturers of dry plate glass negatives and slides in the 1880s.

A compelling small archive from this leading Bridgeport man member of the New England Botanical Club and president of the Bridgeport Scientific Society documenting the life of the city when Barnum was mayor and Olmstead had created Sea Island Park. Apart from its importance in the remodeling of astronomy in conformity with physical theory the work is of the utmost importance as a source book - it contains the FIRST PRINTING OF NEWTON'S PAPER ON LUNAR THEORY "Lunae Theoria Newtoniana" pp. 332-336 as well as the FIRST EXPOSITION OF NEWTON'S CLASSICAL SCHOLIA which Newton himself considered an important part of his philosophy.Gregory a Scottish mathematician who taught at Edinburgh and Oxford was one of Newton's closest friends and associates. Newton thought highly of his work and communicated for insertion it in his Lunar Theory. He also permitted Gregory to use the material of that which is known as his "Classical Scholia" which are incorporated into Gregory's preface. "Newtonian scholars have long been aware of a set of draft Scholia to Propositions IV to IX of Book III of the "Principia". These were composed in the 1690's as part of an unimplemented plan for a second edition of the work. Since they describe supposed anticipation of Newton's doctrines in the thought of Greco-Roman antiquity they have been known as the 'classical' Scholia. Newton's thoughts on these matters were not however kept completely concealed. HE PERMITTED DAVID GREGORY TO USE THE MATERIAL EXTENSIVELY in a long historical preface to his "Astronomiae Physicae & Geometricae Elementa" 1702 IF WITHOUT ATTRIBUTION. It was also available to Maclaurin for his much later work." McGuire & Rattansi in "Newton and the Pipes of Pan" 1966."It was the first textbook composed on gravitational principles and remodeling astronomy in conformity with physical theory. Newton thought highly of it and communicated for insertion in it p. 332 his 'lunar theory' long the guide of practical astronomers in determining the Moon's motions. The discussion in the preface in which the doctrine of gravitation was brought into credit on the score of its antiquity likewise emanated from Newton." DNB."His thick folio text on foundations of astronomy Astronomiae.elementa 1702 is a well-documented but unimaginative attempt to graft the gravitational synthesis propounded in the first book and especially the third book of Newton's Principia onto the findings of traditional astronomy. While respected as a source book it is now chiefly remembered for the remarks by Newton on the prisca sapientia of the ancients and their "knowledge" of the inverse-square law of universal gravitation and for the Latin version of Newton's short paper on lunar theory which it reproduces."
