1865357New York: William Wood & Company 1865. 4to. 290 x 225 mm. 11 1/2 x 9 inches. ix-xvii 19-139 pp. collates per the copy at Princeton. 11 full-page lithographic plates 9 of which are printed in colored. Publisher's green cloth title gilt on upper board and in blind on lower cover; joints cracked but expertly repaired corners and edges bumped and the green cloth is faded in some places; preliminary leaves foxed as are the tissue guards otherwise quite a clean copy. First Edition. Isaac Trimble was chief entomologist for the State Agricultural Society of New Jersey and well as a member of the Horticultural Association of the America Institute. His book was a practical manual for the preservation of fruit trees and was directed at the numerous fruit farmers of this country. His text discusses the recent literature on the destruction of fruit and fruit trees by insects and attempts to provide an observational element to the discussion so farmers not interested in the science can observe infestation and do something about it before infection occurs. The plates in the book drawn by the New York City artist A. Hochstein complements Trible text with beautifully printed color plates that demonstrate the devastation that insects do to fruit. Hochstein was a specialist in drawing and painting flowers fruits and insects and worked with a number of publishers producing illustrations for horticultural texts. The plates in this book are unsigned by were probably executed by R. Craighead a printer on Centre Street in New York City. Bennett p. 106. Chester PA February 26 1806-August 22 1845. Content in fine hand filling 23 pp. followed by several blank leaves final six excised. Oblong octavo 8" x 5-1/2". Stiff marbled sewn wrappers. Moderate rubbing to exterior some wear to spine and corners light toning to interior. $500. James Barnard of Chester Pennsylvania was married to Susannah Dutton. James served as sheriff registrar recorder prothonotary and clerk of the courts in Delaware County Pennsylvania. The Barnards had eight children. The eldest son James Day Barnard a lawyer died at 25 a few months after his father's death. Upon his father and brother's death the eldest surviving male Barnard Isaac received or perhaps he personally recorded his brother's outstanding legal fees and his father's estate assets and accounts in this manuscript notebook. Like his deceased elder brother Isaac studied law and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1816 after notable service as a major in the War of 1812. He served terms in the Pennsylvania State Senate and U.S. Senate. The accounts are notable for their fine detail. The first segment records all the monies collected for various legal work performed by Isaac's older brother James: recording judgments estate administration vendue matters certificates for naturalization of citizenship or fees earned for specific cases Gibbons v. Riley Miles v. Adams McElroy v. Hibbard etc. These accounts span 1806-1807 suggesting that the fees within were collected posthumously by Isaac for services performed before his brother's death. The notebook's second segment records monies earned by the father in office primarily for recording deeds. Again the chronology suggests a similar scenario to the notebook's first segment. There are also several leaves of entries with much later dates recording monies received by Thomas Barnard. All accounts are clearly legible and amounts of fees charged for all legal services are pr. unknown

Interior contents clean. <br /> <br /> Originally issued in wraps this bound copy has 87 blank sheets of paper following page 84. Previous owner's inscription "Eliza Little 1899" written on the first front blank end sheet. Another inscription on the second front blank end paper reads "Sarah Little Gray Book Fred S. Little." A blue printed folding genealogy of George Little 1618-1692 Newbury Massachusetts is tipped in after page 84. At the bottom corner of this folded printed document is the hand written inscription "With the regards of James P. Roupeau Newburyport July 4th 1852." The document is lightly foxed and toned. A small closed tear at the bottom fold of the paper. A clipped piece of paper with writing "Charlotte H Little Born Nov. 25 1834 Died July 16 1857" laid inside the book. American Office - James O. Nathaniel Silsbee' a Massachusetts Whig who when this pamphlet was printed was a United States Senator.<br /> <br /> A rare pamphlet criticizing McKim a Baltimore Jacksonian Congressman for rejecting his constituents' instructions that he oppose Jackson's removal of the federal deposits from the Bank of the United States. McKim refused on the ground that about half the names of the alleged constituents did not appear on the rolls of qualified voters. <br /> R.D. Milholland Matthew Kelly George Thomae Aaron Clapp and Alexan. Kirkland representatives of each of the five wards in McKim's district angrily rebut McKim's assertion. They present a 20-page "List of Signers to the instructions to the Hon. Isaac McKim whose names are found on the poll-books of the first five wards of the city of Baltimore"; a List of Signers to the Instructions whose names were rejected by McKim although they were in fact legal and qualified voters; and another list of 205 names voters who would have signed the instructions but had been unable to do so in timely fashion.<br /> OCLC records copies of this pamphlet only at the Boston Athenaeum and Temple University.
