Single rule gilt border on the front and back boards. Gilt ornamental rulings on the spine. Heads darkened. Very light foxing throughout both volumes. Minor worming in the gutter of the front endpapers of volume II. Ink stain along the foot edge of volume I. List of illustrations in volume I has pencil marks next to each listing. Generally the text blocks are clean bright and square with a strong binding. His observations during two years of travels through eastern North America and Canada told through a series of letters comprise one of the most popular narratives of the day. Story wrote that "his account of Canada letters 21-25 is a clear and sustained description of an area and a way of life that pleased him more than had the United States." Weld made one trip south as far as Virginia as well as crossing Pennsylvania and New York. He said that he left the United States "without a sigh and without entertaining the slightest wish to revisit it." The engraved plates are after sketches by the author. The map with its borders and those of the states colored by hand shows the East Coast of America south through North Carolina with an inset map of South Carolina and west through the Great Lakes region. unknown

"According to the Travels Weld landed at Philadelphia in November 1795 from which he made excurisions in all directions. On one of these he visited Baltimore Washington Alexandria and Mount Vernon. On another he moved west to York and Lancaster the northern neck of Virginia and Williamsburg and Norfolk apparently going as far south as the Dismal Swamp. At Williamsburg he noted that the captial was crumbling to pieces that William and Mary was a grammar school rather that a college that the church was out of repair and that the hospital for the insane was not well regulated. On his return he journeyed to Richmond and west to the mountains and as was usual with travelers he described Rock Bridge. After coming back to Philadelphia he went to Canada. Very popular at the time it was published Weld comments on the population and social habits and customs of the people he saw. According to Howes Weld seemed to prefer Canada to the States. Compared to the similar works of this period Weld seems to be fairly objective on most things. However whether or not his observation that Americans lose their teeth prematurely is accurate would be hard to substantiate. Contains several interesting views of Niagara Falls Mt. Two volume set. 427 375pp. Octavo 22 cm Nicely rebound in tan 3/4 quarter calf over the original marbled leather boards. Backstrip has red and black gilt stamped leather labels with gilt rules. Floral gilt stamped pattern to the rest of the backstrip. The front board of volume 1 is nearly detached and the front free endpaper map and title page are detached but present. Both volumes internally clean. Advertisements have been removed from both volumes. The large folding map 'Part of the United States of North America' measures 48 cm by 43 cm and is present at the front of volume one. Large map shows America as it was then known with the western edge being Detroit and Kentucky. The state lines are hand colored. A few short closed tears at the folds. Volume one also contains seven views two plans Washington and Quebec and a map of upper and lower Canada. Volume two contains five views four of these are about Niagara Falls. Nice early American travel narrative by this Irish writer and artist. Howes W235. Sabin 192541. Weld's Travels Through the States of North America and the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada was an instant success. It went through several editions and was translated into several different languages. It is worth noting that Weld's work is more favorable towards Canada than it is towards the United States. In early 20th century cloth; lacking the advertisements called for by Howes; all plates are present. Bindings are a little worn at the spine ends with some fraying to head of the spine of Volume I otherwise only light edgewear; endpaper split at the hinges but have been discreetly and neat reglued and are strong; early pencil markings—mostly small hands with pointing fingers in the margins; list of places with pencil check marks probably more recent; light and foxing throughout but more so around the folding plates and maps even here it is not very distracting. This is a fairly nice copy in 20th century binding of a very good early travel narrative. <br /> <br /> Originally issued by Stockdale in 1799 this is an early edition of a frequently reprinted travel narrative this edition with striking views of Niagra Falls Hudson River Natural Bridge in Virginia and more. Clark writes "It is obvious from this volume that he was a loyal Englishman with enough aristocratic prejudice not to understand the American frontiersmen. His attitude is indicated by his closing remarks that he left the United States 'without a sigh and without entertaining the slightest wish to revisit ti.' In the cities he mixed with the best society and met the important leaders of the country including Washington and Jefferson. Of them he was less critical" Clark Old South II 132. Octavo modern half calf marbled boards pp. 48. $2400.First American edition of this account of the prosecution of radical printer Daniel Isaac Eaton for sedition with a wood engraving on the title page of the King of England next to a gamecock.In 1793 ""having acquired his own press Eaton launched Hog's Wash or A Salmagundy for Swine a weekly designed to spread political enlightenment among the masses. Partly original items partly excerpts enlivened by satire irony humour and verse it was immediately successful. Renamed Politics for the People it ran for sixty numbers September 1793 to March 1795. Through its pagesas through his pamphletsEaton consistently advocated universal manhood suffrage annual parliaments peace among nations education of the poor and unfettered discussion of politics and religion. When in the eighth number 16 November 1793 he published two items attacking monarchy one comparing the king to a cruel tyrannical gamecock Eaton was prosecuted for seditious libel but acquitted on both counts. He triumphantly adopted the imprint: 'Printed by D. I. Eaton at the Cock and Swine No. 74 Newgate Street.' The London Corresponding Society caused silver medals to be struck commemorating his acquittal. His shop became a gathering place for reformers and radicals"" DNB. Eaton is perhaps best remembered today for being arrested and convicted for publishing Thomas Paine's The Age of Reason serving 18 months in prison. Published earlier that same year in London. Early full polished calf decorated in blind on the sides later expertly recornered and rebacked retaining the original gilt-decorated spine with two contrasting leather title-labels; leather a little unevenly discoloured and rubbed with minor loss to the polished surface of the spine; scattered foxing moderate in places; plates offset; tiny blemish to the bottom margin of one plate a paper flaw well clear of the printed surface; trifling signs of age and use a shallow crease to the bottom corner-tip of the last ten leaves is about the extent of it; overall an excellent copy. The eight plates normally found with a small folding section are bound into this copy in an unfolded state by the simple expedient of having the narrow left-hand border of the printed surface of each plate deep in the gutter. The border is visible in four instances and although the border cannot be seen on the other four plates all of the other printed plate surface is visible. L'originale a d'abord paru en latin en 1707 et la première traduction anglais en 1720. Elle est illustrée de 8 planches dépliantes reliées in fine. Cette édition fut mise au point par le commentateur Theaker Wilder à l'usage de ses élèves dublinois. À l'origine, ce petit traité abordant l'algèbre et la solution des équations a paru sans le nom de son illustre auteur et provient de ses leçons professées de 1673 à 1683 alors qu'il est professeur de mathématiques à Cambridge. Son successeur à ce poste n'est autre que William Whiston, traducteur de la première édition anglaise. Newton y donne notamment, sans démonstration, son interprétation de la règle des signes de Descartes pour obtenir le nombre de racines réelles d'un polynôme. Il faudra attendre 1865 pour que le mathématicien anglais James Joseph Sylvester en fasse la démonstration après que nombres de mathématiciens, et parmi eux Euler, s'y soient essayés en vain. 1778WRCAM41363Virginia 1778. One folded sheet. Approximately 550 words. Tanned at folds. Some ink burn through page. An embossment on one side reads "Washington County." A small closed tear affects approximately six characters. A manuscript land deed written by Isaac Cox for the sale of land to John Decker. In the deed Cox refers to "Yohogania County" a Virginia county created in 1776. The county included much of south-western Pennsylvania and overlapped with Pennsylvania's own western claims. The land in question is "on the river Ohio and bounded on the East by lands of Thomas Pollack and on the North by lands of William McMahan said land goes by the name of the Mingo Bottom containing four hundred acres." Mingo was a term for the Native Americans mostly Iroquois who had been displaced and settled in the northern Ohio river basin. Modern-day Mingo Junction lies in the far rnorthern pan-handle of West Virginia north of Steubenville Ohio and would have had close associations with Washington County Pennsylvania than Virginia. This association would explain why in 1806 a Washington County clerk approved the deed. unknown books
