Rebound in auburn cloth about 50 years ago there are several small water stains on the front board some sl. edge wear and corner rubbing and a small water stain to the top right corner not affecting text of pp. 33 to 95 and again in the final pages. The publishers have appended an eight-page listing of their books following the text. Overall in generally good or good plus condition. Observations by Fidler presented 'in the form of conversations on the several points of his inquiries with known or named individuals whose nativity to the Transatlantic soil or long residence in the country may entitle their statements to respect.' Book I contains conversations on topics relevant to emigration to the United States. Book II contains conversations on Canada. Final 2 pages of text contain "Systematic Index of the Shells Described in Mr Lea's Memoirs: Volumes III. IV. and V." Isaac Lea 1792-1886 was an American geologist conchologist and publisher. This article by Lea was read before the Society on March 16 1832. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: disbound from a larger volume; pp. 109-119 detached from remainder of text block as a unit; light foxing primarily in the margins of the text; plates are clean and bright. Minor wear large chip of top right corner of blank margin no text loss. Good.<br /> <br /> Isaac S. Cohen 1871-1915 was a Jewish businessman in Charleston. He worked for First National Bank after high school then worked as a cashier and later president for twenty years of Charleston Savings Bank. He was the son of Louis Cohen 1833-1914 a Polish Jew who came to Charleston in 1850 and became a successful tailor and later the owner of a large and well-known clothing store in Florence. "Charleston Banker Died In Asheville" Columbia Record June 23 1915 page 8; Find A Grave website accessed July 2025.<br /> Joseph Marks 1858-1935 was the president of M. Marks & Sons for many years a business started by his father Moses Marks 1833-1911 a Russian Jew who came to the United States in 1850 settled in Charleston and became a successful merchant. Moses opened the large and very successful M. Marks & Sons in 1891 as a dry goods emporium and clothing business. The business ran until about 1930. Moses Marks' obituary says the business was "probably the first 5 and 10 cents store in the United States." "M. Recently bound in maroon buckram title label to spine. Very Good with light wear to covers and slight bumping to lower corners; title label beginning to lift at one corner. Band of paper residue to front free endpaper. Light toning and moderate foxing to textblock edges and contents dampstain to outer textblock edge and outer margin throughout. Cohen pp. 347-352.<br /> <br /> <p>The first American edition of the foundational physics text first published in Latin in 1687. Andrew Motte's 1729 translation was reprinted in 1803 and 1819 in Britain but subsequent 19th century editions were printed only in the United States and Germany. The New York-based publisher Daniel Adee deposited a copyright for the Principia in 1846 then printed five issues between 1848 and 1850. A contemporary notice in the Scientific American declared:<br /> <br /> <p>"For a long time the 'Principia' was kept far out of the reach of the mere English Scholar as if Newton had written it exclusively for the classical student and philosopher. It was a scarce book when printed in the Latin language; it is now thanks to the spirit of an American publisher printed in our mother tongue and should find a place in every family library.
