On the author Source: Jewish Encyclopedia:<br /> SPEKTOR ISAAC ELHANAN. Russian rabbi and author; born at Rosh government of Grodno 1817; died at Kovno March 6 1896. . Young Isaac Elhanan made remarkable progress in his Talmudical studies and was soon famous as an "'ilui" or prodigy. At the age of thirteen he married and settled with his wife's parents in Vilkovisk where he remained for six years. . Spektor received his "semikah" or ordination from Benjamin Diskin and from R. Isaac Haber of Tiktin later of Suwalki. The 300 rubles which his wife had brought him as dowry having been lost through the bankruptcy of his debtor Spektor . became in 1837 rabbi of the small adjacent town of Sabelin with a weekly salary of five Polish gulden. He remained there in great poverty for about two years . In 1846 Spektor was chosen rabbi of Nishvez government of Minsk; but the community of Baresa was unwilling to let him go and he was obliged to leave the town at night. . He went to Novohrodok in May 1851 and remained there until the same month in 1864 when he accepted the rabbinate of Kovno which he occupied until his death. September 3rd 1865 from Isaac Arnold Jr. Chief of Ordnance Department of the South at Hilton Head S. C. This letter acknowledges the service of Major Wheelock Pratt before Arnold departs to serve as Asst. Ordinance Officer in for Allegheny PA. Arnold praises the competencies of Pratt claiming that "In no instance has any complaint reached me. At the same time the achievements of affairs within the Depot was satisfactorily constructed upon the arrival of Genl Sherman's Army. with you again rested the responsibility of. a large part of it. And the dispatch with which you completed this duty is deserving of the greater credit.Upon hearing your being mustered out of service I made an effort to have you retained in position but am sorry to say it failed as the request made was contrary to the rules of the War Dept."<br /><br />In his closing Arnold warmly wishes Pratt happiness should he choose civilian life but would "extend the right hand of fellowship" if he chose to remain in service. But Pratt would die a year later due to injuries<br /><br />Isaac Arnold Jr. 1839-1901 graduated from the Military Academy in 1862 and over the years had earned the ranks of Brevet Captain Captain Major and Lieutenant Colonel. He died Oct. 15 1901 at Allegheny Arsenal PA.<br /><br />Major Wheelock Pratt 1829-1866 enlisted in In Sept. 1861 in "C" Company United-States Engineer Battalionwhere he served through the peninsular campaign at Antietam South Mountain and Fredericksburg. But due to his serving as leader of a "Black" company a written protest by by Engineers kept him from being placed in charge of the reconstruction of Battery Wagner; he was " placed in charge of Battery Chatfield in rear of Cummings Point. Commentary by Moses Narbonni and a contemporary commentary "Givat Hamoreh" printed anonymously but actually by the maskil Solomon Maimon. Edited by Isaac Abraham Euchel one of leaders of the moderate wing of the Berlin Haskalah. Prefaces by Narbonni and Maimon. Errata pages after the first and third sections. Explanation of philosophical terms. As with Moses Mendelssohn's Biur project this work exemplifies the moderate strain within the late 18th century German Haskalah which attempted to reform traditional Judaism using the medieval Jewish philosophical tradition exemplified by Maimonides. A highly controversial figure both during his lifetime and after his death but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah his only work not in Arabic still carries canonical authority particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community as the codification of Talmudic law. His other work includes a commentary on the Mishnah entitled Kitab al-Siraj Kitab al-Fara'I a book on precepts and the philosophical work Dalalat al-Ha'irin known in Hebrew as the Moreh Nevukhim The Guide to the Perplexed. The major premise is an attempted philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. Two old ownership signatures. A good clean copy. Cory 1802-1842 was a fellow of Caius College Cambridge. Beyond that very little is known of him. The first of these works is an curious history of philosophy focusing on logic and scientific method. Cory's other works include Ancient Fragments of the Phoenician Chaldean Egyptian Tyrian Carthaginian Indian Persian and other writers Greek and Latin 1832 which went through several editions including one as recent as 1875; Practical Treatise on Accounts Exhibiting a View of the Discrepancies Between the Practice of the Law and of Merchants 1839; and Competition: Its Abuse…with Suggestions for Remedying It 1842.</p> William Pickering, hardcover

He was born into one of the oldest families and perhaps most notable. He inherited a legacy of high ambition and accomplishment going back to the family’s early settlers in the United States—Barnard and Michael Gratz. The Gratz Brothers were most enterprising in shipping land acquisition and trading which allowed for the cementing of the strong and influential relationship between the family and the city. Simon’s father Edward Gratz was known for his activities with the construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad and his most famous aunt Rebecca Gratz for her ‘charm’ and philanthropy†Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The author Jonas Ennery 1801-1863 was a French deputy. He was for twenty-six years attached to the Jewish school of Strasbourg of which he became the head. In collaboration with Hirth he compiled a Dictionnaire Général de Géographie Universelle 4 vols. Strasburg 1839–41 for which Cuvier wrote a preface. Soon afterward he published Le Sentier d'Israël ou Bible des Jeunes Israélites Paris Metz and Strasburg 1843. At the request of the Société des Bons Livres he took part in the editorship of Prières d'un CÅ“ur Israélite which appeared in 1848. In 1849 despite anti-Jewish rioting in Alsace Ennery was elected representative for the department of the Lower Rhine and sat among the members of the "Mountain." He devoted his attention principally to scholastic questions. After the coup d'état he resisted the new order of things and was exiled for life in 1852. The author Isaac Aboab lived in Toledo at the end of the 14th century. His Hebrew work Menorath HaMe'or "The Candelabrum of Light" is a classic ethical work. It became immensely popular among the Jews in the Middle Ages with more than seventy editions printed. Originally written in Hebrew it was translated into Spanish Ladino Yiddish and German with the 1st edition printed in Constantinople in 1514. <br /> <br /> "Developing the image of the seven-branched candlestick cf. Num. 4:9 Isaac divides his work into seven nerot "lamps". These in turn are subdivided into main divisions parts and chapters. Using the three parts of Psalms 34:15 as general headings he assigns the seven lamps to them in the following manner: a "Depart from evil" 1 guard against envy lust ambition; 2 be wary of sins attendant upon speech. b "Do good" 3 observance of mitzvot such as circumcision rearing of children prayer festivals honoring parents founding a family charity justice; 4 study of Torah; 5 repentance. c "Seek peace and pursue it" 6 peace and love for fellowman; and 7 humility. Into this rather loose framework lsaac fitted a wealth of aggadic material culled from the Talmud and the vast midrashic literature. His use of passages from aggadic works now lost and the variants in the talmudic and midrashic texts he cites make the Menorat ha-Ma'or of great importance for establishing the text of the Talmud used in the Spanish-North African academies as distinct from that of the Franco-German school.
