In a modern slipcase.

First French edition of Behren's account of Jacob Roggeveen's 1721-22 Pacific voyage.

The first French edition of Behren's German account of Jacob Roggeveen's 1721-22 Pacific voyage which provided important impetus for further exploration for the great Southern Continent. The author was a sergeant and commander of marines on the voyage. Contemporary accounts of Roggeveen's explorations were first published in Dutch in 1728 and in German beginning in 1735. This French translation was based on the Frankfurt and Leipzig editions of 1737. Behrens' scarce narrative tells the story of one of the most significant of the Dutch voyages ranking with those of Le Maire Schouten and Tasman. Roggeveen set out to rediscover the part of Terra Australis which Quiros had led the exploring world to believe existed but in fact added substantially to the Dutch record of Polynesian discoveries with Easter Island and Samoa described here for the first time. "Roggewein's is the first certified account of contact with Easter Island and its great stone images as well as the last of the great Dutch circumnavigations" Cox. "Though some attribute the translation to Charles de Brosses Chareles Pierre Claret Fleurieu believed that the style of language revealed the efforts of a non-native speaker. 172255261Offenbach Germany: Israel Ken 1722. Second edition. This is the copy of the Rabbi David Paul-Bernard Drach 1791-1868 who converted to Catholicism in 1823 and managed the library of the Propaganda Fide in Rome. The front endpaper has a note that is signed and dated by Drach: "Etudie et annote ce volume; supplee lets mots ronges par les vers et corrige les fautes typographiques." Notes to margins. Introductory note by Drach lauding the book: "Le calendrier juif dont les calculs sont d'une exactitude admirable etait deja en usage du temps de Rabbie Gamliel pas consequents a l'epoque ou le Verbe eternel caro factum est et habitavit in nobis."

8vo. 40 in Hebrew letters numbered leaves i.e. 80pp. re-cased in later vellum with leather strips. Engraved title page. Fascinating work on the Jewish calendar its estimation calculation of the New Moon methods of chronology et.al. Also contains a few pages on the Christian calendar. This work is one of the most profusely illustrated works of Hebraica and Judaica with charts ephemerides sketches and illustrations throughout. One volvell attached. In Hebrew. First ten leaves with one inch holes from bookworms. The rest of the volome with minor circular bookworm hole. Some loss of text on first ten leaves. "The volvelles as well as hand diagrams and tables were some of the tools used not just for calculating and identifying pivotal dates and worshipping times for Jews but also for ascertaining Christan holidays. This knowledge was a critical aid for protecting Jews from the danger posed by their having different worshipping times and habits from the dominant culture. The headings on the wheel denote the arrival of the new moon which marks the start of the Jewish month and the cycle of the sun. Whereas calendars appear in general to be a “convenient way to coordinate human movements with natural time†as Elisheva Carlebach points out the Sefer ‘Evronot demonstrates that the methods for doing so are culturally and historically shaped. The wheel computing information with each push of a finger demands interaction from the reader in order to yield knowledge not just to use but to live by." The paper influenced both Leonhard Euler in writing his first research paper and British mathematician Brook Taylor to begin a dispute which has later been referred to as Taylor versus Continental mathematicians. "It the dissertation was considered as a prodigy of sagacity and invention: and indeed if the time be considered it will not be too much to assert that a more difficult problem never was solved." Bossut. A general history of mathematics. 341 p.The isoperimetric problem is an ancient problem which dates back to antiquity and can be described as which curve if any maximizes or minimizes the area of its enclosed regionEuler who had been taught by Johann Bernoulli published his first paper in 1726 which was a note on the construction of isochronous curves in a resistant medium.DSB II 48b.The following papers by Johann Bernoulli are also contained in the present volume:1. 1713180566Basel: Johann Rudolph & Emanuel Thurneysen 1713. The subject of the first published computer programme First edition of the first systematic treatment of probability theory the source of the law of large numbers binomial distribution and Bernoulli numbers. The Ars Conjectandi was the first work to suggest that probability could be applied in civil moral and economic matters and it remains the foundation of much modern practice in such fields as insurance and statistics. Jacob Bernoulli 1655-1705 was the first of the famed Bernoulli family to study mathematics: Johann 1667-1748 was his brother while Nicolaus 1687-1759 and Daniel 1700-1782 were his nephews. Nicolaus revised his uncle's manuscripts for this publication and provided his own two-page preface. The Bernoulli numbers in the Ars Conjectandi inspired the first published computer programme as devised by Ada Lovelace in 1843. Looking to demonstrate the potential of Babbage's analytical engine Lovelace wrote an algorithm with which the machine could calculate the Bernoulli sequence each generated recursively from previous values. The algorithm was published in Taylor's Scientific Memoirs in August 1843. Amusingly the final section includes several comments on jeu de paume - a ball game having much in common with modern tennis and very little in common with the rest of the work.
