All of the editions included here contain the first German translations of their respective parts of the text.<br /> <br /> Maimonides' intention with this work was to reconcile Aristotelian thought and logic with traditional Rabbinical Jewish theology. Originally written circa 1190 in Judeo-Arabic as Dalalat al-Ha'irin these writings takes the form of a lengthy three-part letter to his student Rabbi Joseph ben Judah of Ceuta and are seen as the main source for understanding Maimonides' philosophic view rather than his strictly being his views on Jewish law. It is the most known of his works in the non-Jewish world. The work's first translation into Hebrew was in 1204 by Rabbi Samuel ben Judah ibn Tibbon c.1150 - c.1230 a contemporary of Maimonides.<br /> <br /> Content:<br /> <br /> Moreh li-Tsedakah. In 1835 the first part of Maimonides acclaimed work was first translated into German with added commentary in Hebrew by Jacob Raphael Fürstenthal 1781-1855. That first edition featured the German translation printed in Latin script to accompany the Hebrew text. However for this second edition of that translation it is interesting to note that the text of the German is printed in Hebrew script. Content finely printed in double and single-column layouts with commentary printed in Rashi script. Divided in 76 chapters this part of the work contains discussions of an understanding and definition of the nature of God and divine anthropomorphism in the Hebrew bible including a detailed analysis of the Biblical Hebrew of the text to these ends. Discussed are concepts including Jewish mysticism the Chariot of Ezekiel the moral aspects of the universe the problem of evil free will and the 613 mitzvot of the Torah. VII 1 512 pp. <br/><br/><em>First edition of the first publication of any of Burckhardt's books his fist major publication the important and influential "The Age of ConstantinE the Great".Burckhardt's "The Age of Constantine the Great" was the first work to describe an "Age of Constantine". It was also the first work of a series of cultural histories that Burckhardt had planned. The series was supposed to begin with the age of Pericles and end with that of Raphael and that of Constantine became the first to appear. The work founded the basic structure of his other later cultural histories namely representing what he considered the three great powers: state religion and culture. Burckhardt eminently describes transitional periods and periods of crises and this work deals with the transition from late pagan Antiquity to early Christian Middle Ages.The age of Constantine is here considered as the necessary transition from Antiquity to the Christian era and as such it is also understood as the basis of the culture of the Middle Ages. In opposition to the historians of his time Burckhardt portrayed the Emperor Constantine negatively as a calculating politician only concerned with preserving his own power whose turn toward Christianity was purely speculative and driven by politics. He is thus portrayed as wholly unreligious and as having the sole goal of dominion. The work and the portrayal of Constantine caused the greatest controversies within religious and historical circles. The work became hugely influential and many later historians were inspired by both the controversial portrayal of Constantine which they applied to other historical figures as well as well as of Burckhardt's theories of the transition between the two eras. The Swiss historian of art and culture Jacob Chrisoph Burckhardt 1818-1897 contributed seminally to the historiography of these two fields. He is considered the discoverer of the Renaissance and with his later main work "Die Cultur der Renaissance in Italien" he founded the study of thirteenth- to fifteenth-century Italy and thereby the historical study of the Renaissance the society of which he dealt with all aspects of. In general Burckhardt's works all constitute an original historical approach to the study of art culture social institutions etc. As a highly respected scholar of Greek civilization Burckhardt with his original historiographical approach was highly admired by Nietzsche who also attended his lectures. The two kept in contact and corresponded frequently. Like Nietzsche Burckhardt was a great admirer of Schopenhauer and he greatly opposed the Hegelian interpretations of history."Outstanding among his Burckhardt's writings are besides the books on Italian art and civilization "The Age of Constantine the Great" 1853 in which he reinterpreted Gibbon and the two posthumously published books." This scarce volume provides brief histories of different types of wrestling from around the world not only from the British Isles but also from Japan Turkey Greece and India. This is followed by biographical chapters on various northern wrestlers. Thereafter are two chapters are on Bull Baiting and Badgers and Badger Baiting. Both of these sports had been outlawed in the United Kingdom as early as 1835 with the Cruelty to Animals Act. There is a reproduction of a Bewickesque woodcut of badger baiting on p.234.The final short chapter is an account by Thomas de Quincey of a ""Midnight Chase of a bull by Professor Wilson"". unknown

Sold as a reference copy only not as a collectible book. Overall the blindstamps are quite well hidden in the background and not noticable upon the initial viewing of the plates. Most have to be examined in detail before even seeing these blindstamps. Sturdy black library buckram. 182 pp with 119 interleaved tissue-guarded color lithographed plates followed by an extensive index of 8pp. This is followed then by the second book listed above described as follows: Title-page blank verso 2 pp. Contents 2 pp. Index of Illustrations 41 full-page color plates interleaved within 156 pp. of text. The second book was also published by Studer in 1878. It seems as if these two volumes were intended to form a set based on what I see in other entries and descriptions. It also seems as if this first printing from 1878 has the superior presentation of color plates compared to the later editions. Get this one as a superb reference set. Jacob H. Studer & Co hardcover

He removed to New Orleans in the 1830s and became an insurance lawyer but by 1867 his fortunes had dwindled and he declared bankruptcy. unknown

Rare edition of the Book of Jasher sometimes called Pseudo-Jasher to distinguish it from the Sefer ha Yashar. The title page of the book states: "The Book of Jasher: with Testimonies and Notes Critical and Historical Explanatory of the Text. To which is prefixed various readings and a preliminary dissertation proving the authenticity of the work. Translated into English from the Hebrew by Flaccus Albinus Alcuinus of Britain Abbot of Canterbury who went on a pilgrimage into the Holy Land and Persia where he discovered this volume in the city of Gazna." The book claims to be written by Jasher son of Caleb. Jasher covers biblical history from the creation down to Jasher's own day and was represented as being the Lost Book of Jasher mentioned in the Bible. The supposed translation was declared an obvious hoax by the Monthly Review and in 1756 the printer Jacob Ilive was sentenced to three years in jail. A photographic reproduction of this edition was published in 1924 by the Rosicrucian Order in San José California who declared it was an inspired work. Marbled endpapers. Age wear and scuffing on binding. Head of spine chipped. Few finger smudges on some leaves. Tight copy with binding in good interior in overall very good condition. Very good or better bright copper with no discernible wear to the engraved lines. Depicts a bald eagle carrying a shield in its talons in flight with a continental land mass in the background and facing a fortified Civil War camp with an American flag and cannon in the foreground. "Engraving by Jacob Stadelman done about 1865" in pencil on the back of the proofs. Jacob Stadelman was a captain in the First Regiment Pennsylvania Reserve Cavalry from August 8 1861 to March 26 1862. Unique. unknown
