FIRST EDITION of Berzelius's first textbook on animal chemistry which included the results of many of his own experiments on animal tissues and fluids. "Berzelius' work as the creator of the science of chemistry in general is universally known. One of his most important contributions however is his investigation of the substances that are produced by life on the earth. In his Lectures on Animal Chemistry published during the years 1806-1808 he expounds his conception of life-phenomena in general and besides records a number of fresh facts in the sphere of organic analysis which he later still further augmented" Nordenskiöld The history of biology pp. 371-372 "In his analysis of the blood Berzelius separated the solid and liquid parts by coagulation and examined each part separately. In the clot he found compounds of carbon phosphorus calcium magnesium and iron. The serum consisted of water containing albumin various salts and some animal matter. His analysis of the serum confirmed results obtained by Marcet. Berzelius also found that bile saliva mucous fluids the humors of the eye and serous fluids contained the same salts in roughly the same proportions as in blood serum. He thought that this result showed that all animal secretions were ultimately derived from the blood. Thus by the second decade of the nineteenth century the new humoralism had already produced useful observations on the properties and constituents of the blood." With the woodcut coat of arms of Enkhuizen on the title page the title and calendar printed in red and black 12 half-page woodcut illustrations 1 for each month and 11 full-page woodcut illustrations. 252 pp. Rare edition of the famous "Enkhuizer Almanak" for the year 1819. It starts with the calendar the dates of holidays and markets held all over Holland astronomical data times of the sun and moon rises and tides; by the Leiden professor and Dutch mathematician Jacob de Gelder 1765-1848 and a medical article on cow-pox vaccination and resuscitating drowned people. This is followed by prognostications for each month by Don Antonio Magino a print series on various professions within the field of agriculture milking cows churning butter and making cheese anecdotes funny stories and riddles a natural history in yearly instalments household medicines advices and a short chronicle of the most important events since 1810. The present volume also has two extra leaves inserted with a statement by the Dutch Educational Society "Tot Nut van 't Algemeen" listing the quires they contributed to the almanac and signed by the secretary Hendrik Ravekes. We have not been able to find any other copies of the 1819 edition.The wrappers are frayed around the edges and torn on the spine. The upper sewing support has broken so a few quires are partly detached mild foxing and thumbing on some of the leaves. With several wood engraving ornaments throughout. 8 432 pp. Second edition of a remarkable Dutch-Malay and French-Malay dictionary partially based on and translated from William Marsdens famous English-Malay dictionary and is otherwise compiled by Cornelis Pieter Jacob Elout. The Malay words are given in both Jawi script and phonetic transcription in italics the Dutch and French words are given in roman script. 1825 as Maleisch Nederduitsch en Fransch woordenboek Dictionnaire Malai Hollandais et Français also by Johannes Enschedé and sons. Elout based his work on the foundational English-Malay dictionary of the British linguist William Marsden 1754-1836 whose pioneering work on the Malay language was an essential tool for the British East India Company in the Malay Archipelago. At the time of publication both Dutch and French were official languages in the Netherlands thus explaining the work being bilingual and having both a Dutch and a French title page.Marsden embarked upon a remarkable journey of scholarship and service that began at Trinity College Dublin. At the tender age of sixteen he joined the British East India Company and in 1771 he was posted to Sumatra. There he not only advanced through the ranks but also mastered the Malay language an achievement that would underpin much of his later work. Returning to England in 1779 Marsden earned a law degree from Oxford and in 1783 published his landmark History of Sumatra which earned him election to the Royal Society. Later he served as secretary to the Admiralty though he ultimately retired in 1807 to devote himself to scholarly pursuits.Cornelis Pieter Jacob Elout 1795-1843 further advanced the Malay lexicography. Born in Haarlem Elout initially prepared for a civilian career yet his life took a decisive turn when he accompanied his father to Java in 1814. There he distinguished himself both militarily and administratively. His involvement in quelling uprisings in Cheribon and Palembang earned him the Military William Order the oldest and hightest honour of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and he played a decisive role in consolidating Dutch authority over Sumatra and other islands in the region. Under the guidance of Professor Reinwardt he attained a profound command of High Malay. This linguistic expertise informed his administrative innovations including the establishment of a Department for Indigenous Affairs tasked with translating and publishing Malay-language texts regulating correspondence with local rulers and overseeing diplomatic missions. His linguistic scholarship culminated in the publication of the work Maleische spraakkunst 1824 and the Dutch-French-Malay dictionary 1825 and 1826 which were both translations and expansions of Marsdens Grammar and dictionary of the Malay language 1812.Marsden himself acknowledged the improvements Elout had made praising the humility with which these enhancements were incorporated.The binding is worn mainly around the spine and lower outer corners of the boards. Fugitive Slave Act Resistance and Community Intervention in the Oberlin Wellington Rescue Shipherd 1859

History of the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue 1859 documenting one of the most consequential acts of organized resistance to the Fugitive Slave Act in the years immediately preceding the American Civil War. The work records the seizure of John Price an escaped enslaved man captured by federal authorities in Oberlin Ohio on September 13 1858 and his subsequent transfer to Wellington in an effort to avoid local abolitionist intervention. Residents from Oberlin and surrounding communities assembled in Wellington confronted federal deputies and forcibly freed Price from custody enabling his escape to Canada through established antislavery networks. The episode prompted federal indictments against thirty-seven participants with only two convictions and became a focal point of national debate over federal enforcement power local resistance and the legal obligations imposed by the Fugitive Slave Act. Shipherd's narrative supported by contemporary participants and advocates provides detailed chronology identification of individuals involved and interpretive framing that aligns the Rescue with broader antislavery mobilization and constitutional conflict. Further experimental work on animal fluids was made possible by new analytical techniques introduced by J.J. Berzelius 1779-1848 in Sweden and Justus von Liebig 1803-1873 in Germany. "A need for better information on the chemical composition of animal substances was recognized by Berzelius in Sweden and in 1806-1808 he published a two-volume textbook of animal chemistry in Swedis. Humphry Davy at once realized the importance of the work and resolved to have it translated into English. The project seemed eminently suitable for the newly formed Animal Chemistry Club a special interest group within the Royal Society. Unfortunately mainly for financial reasons no English translation of the work was ever published. Alexander Marcet 1770-1828 later persuaded Berzelius to publish some of his analyses of animal fluids in English which became an important source of data for British animal chemists. Very Good; some modest soiling primarily to the mounting cardboard which also shows three small abrasions; some fading to the text. The multi-talented Charles Wallace Jacob Johnson 1833-1903 - certainly an early True California Man - was a successful photographer miner dance instructor and musician; he achieved some success in all these endeavors but is probably best known for his photography enterprises which he undertook in the late 1860's with William N. Tuttle - another prominent 19th-century California photographer known for documenting the state's growth and natural beauty through stereoscopic views; and later a T. Al Sullivan which may be a reference to Timothy H. O'Sullivan. Neither . He settled in Monterey - where this shot would be taken - in 1881. Also - on the back is the signature "E. B. Kimball" - light but enhanced by me in the second image of it here; this is likely to have been so placed by Eugene B. Kimball a significant figure in California's mining history during the late 19th and early 20th centuries = though I have no direct proof of that nor sufficient exmplars of the notable Mr. Kimball's hand to retain an FHE for authentication. All in all a historic and.well spooky-beautiful early California photo art from and associated with noted Californians of the day. The three notables in addition to Johnson here are the report at purchase here from the PBA source auction at which I acquired this piece. Please see images.
