Originally composed in 1612 this mystical text brought charges of heresy against Böhme but went on to shape the course of German theosophy Pietism and esoteric philosophy. The Aurora sets out his vision of creation and divine order blending philosophy astrology and theology into a spiritual cosmology that would influence generations of thinkers.<br /> <br /> The engraved frontispiece "Aurora" and accompanying emblematic plate continue the tradition of the Gichtel engravings first introduced in the Amsterdam editions of the 1680s by Böhme's follower Johann Georg Gichtel. These images became the definitive visual expression of Böhme's cosmology and were reproduced in later editions such as this.<br /> <br /> Bound in black pastepaper with veined pattern pastedown with a manuscript spine title.<br /> <br /> It is in Very Good condition with light foxing in places a small stain at pp. 121/128 scattered toning and an ownership inscription on the endpaper dated 1857.<br /> <br /> The inscription "J. L. Jacobi Gotha 1857" likely refers to Justus Ludwig Jacobi 1815-1888 Protestant church historian and professor at Halle who wrote on early Christianity and heterodox theology. Originally published in 1723 Gravesande’s works was on the Index until 1749 and therefore out of reach of students and most men of science in Italy. This work written in Latin for students begins with a description of the nature of matter in general and moves on to matter in motion the mutability of matter the forces which are exerted by a body in motion and the elasticity of matter when collisions occur in nature. Gravity is the next subject which Gravesande attempts to convey to his students followed by lectures on light and color. The 18 engraved plates bound throughout the text include numerous examples the illustrate the content explained in the six chapters of the book.</p> <br /> <p>Gravesande was a Dutch philosopher and mathematician member of the Royal Society of London who laid down the foundations for teaching physics. "His first botanical publication was an Isagoge in botanicam expeditiorem 1759 a preliminary to his Botanica expeditior of 1760. This guide to botany consists of an enumeration of all genera in tabular form followed by extensive synonomy. The books brings little new but is interesting because it is one of the first few German works in which the Linnaean generic reform taxonomic as well as nomenclatural if fully accepted" Stafleu. Jan van der Linde Folded. 1 blank 2 1 blank pp. Unrecorded printed auction announcement and inventory of the frigate Prins van Oranje which was launched in 1729 commanded by Teunis Kragt and put up for auction in 1747 by the brokers Jacob de Flines and his son in Amsterdam. Its great detail makes it a highly interesting source for the equipment supplies and provisions of an 18th-century Dutch frigate. It mentions the various ropes sails ships cabin goods for example tea and coffee pots the helmsmens goods compass lamp etc. the cooks goods kettles pans spoons artillery and munition among other things a linstock pistols and gunpowder and many other goods aboard a 18th-century frigate. The auction took place on 23 October 1747 at the home of Matthijs Poolman casteleyn van Nieuwezijds Heeren Logement. One copy of another inventory and announcement of an auction by Jacob de Flines almost identical in lay-out to the present is recorded in the STCN for the ship Magdalena Ester sold in 1745. It is now in the Amsterdam city archives.With a small drawing in black ink and two contemporary inscriptions in brown ink by the same hand on the blank pages. Other parties involved were Robert Hosea or Hosey and John Godard. Three liquid stains that moderately effect text see image. Small losses at folds of paper and left edge. Doc tape connecting top and bottom halves at middle fold. Light transfer of ink to left edge from being previously folded. 12 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches.
1780ABC_48891The Netherlands 1780. Late 18th-century gold-tooled brown mottled calf sewn on 5 supports bound by the so-called Acorn-and-Foliage Tool Bindery in Amsterdam Storm van Leeuwen. Both boards show the large gold-tooled monogram of the Amsterdam chamber of the VOC as a centre piece sandwiched between the gold-tooled date Anno 1780 all within a gold-tooled floral frame with floral corner pieces in the inside corners spine gold-tooled in six compartments red sprinkled edges. 4to ca. 19 x 15 cm. Manuscript in French written in black ink on paper in a neat cursive script by one hand. With chapter divisions numbered 39-75 and headings. The text is written upside down in relation to the binding. Most leaves show an identical watermark depicting a lion rampant on a pedestal with Vryheyt in a crowned ring with Pro Patria Eiusque Libertate and the letters CR below which is very close to Heawood 3149 date: 1753. Late 18th-century manuscript copy of a French childrens catechism by the Swiss theologian Jacob Vernet 1698-1789 bound in a remarkable late 18th-century binding originally produced for the Amsterdam Chamber of the Dutch East India Company VOC by the so-called Acorn-and-Foliage Tool Bindery which was active between ca. 1760 and ca. 1784 Storm van Leeuwen.It shows the large monogram of the Amsterdam Chamber of the VOC sandwiched between the date "Anno 1780" on both boards. These bindings were usually commissioned as gifts to persons important to the VOC often containing an almanac for the relevant year but possibly also produced as blank notebooks. The present work comprises chapters 39-49 and 58-75 of Vernet's work which form almost the second half of printed editions. The chapters included in the present work are complete and exactly follow the order of the printed text in the Geneva 1742 edition pp. 75-140 checked using a digital copy with a slightly different spelling and replacing some words. For unclear reasons chapters 50-57 dealing with the fourth through tenth commandment have not been copied and several leaves between the end of chapter 49 and the beginning of chapter 58 have been left blank.Vernets religious text was first published in 1741 under the title Instruction chrétienne ou catechisme familier; avec quelques prières a lusage des petits enfans . In 1742 a revised edition appeared with a slightly different title Instruction crhetienne ! ou catechisme familier. Avec quelques passages de lEcriture Sainte & quelques prières à lusage des petits enfans. Nouvelle edition. Revuë corrigée & augmentée. Both works were printed in Geneva for the Swiss bookseller Emanuel Du Villard Emmanuel Duvillard 1693-1776 and subsequently reprinted several more times until 1769. With the book block showing the remnants of 12 removed leaves probably already removed before the manuscript was finished. Both pastedowns partly detached an old annotation Ao. 44305 in black ink on the lower pastedown some foxing. Christoph Friedrich Während seiner von April 1770 bis August 1771 dauernden Straßburger Studienzeit folgte Johann Wolfgang von Goethe während des Wintersemesters als Gasthörer den Vorlesungen Spielmanns an der Straßburger Universität und in der Hirschapotheke. Von Spielmann übernahm er auch den Ausdruck 'encheiresin naturae' wörtlich übersetzt: "Zugriff der Natur". Spielmann meinte damit dass natürliche Kräfte die Bestandteile einer Substanz selbige zu einer Gesamtheit verbinden. "wunderliche Vor- und vielmehr Überkenntnisse" Brief Goethes an Frl. v. Klettenburg " Adlung/Urdang p.147496 Jacob Reinbold Spielmann 1722-1783. "Das Geschlecht Spielman oder Spilmann läßt sich in Straßburg schon im 15. Jahrhundert nachweisen. Johann Jacob S. erwarb dort 1657 von dem Großvater seiner Frau Albrecht Weßnec die Apotheke zum goldenen Hirschen welche wie es scheint schon 1268 oder doch 1349 die gleiche Stelle einnahm wie heute noch; sie bildet eine Ecke des Münsterplatzes und der Krämergasse. Jacob Reinbold der berühmte Sohn des genannten Apothekers geboren zu Straßburg am 31. März 1722 wurde von 1735-1740 von dem Vater in jener Apotheke unterrichtet wo schon 1733 der nachmals ausgezeichnete Chemiker Andreas Sigismund Marggraf ADB XX 334 als Gehülfe thätig und nicht ohne Einfluß auf den jungen Spielmann gewesen war. Diesem genügte die Pharmacie nicht; er studirte zugleich an der Universität alte und neue Sprachen und Philosophie. 1740-1742 reiste er in Deutschland um sich vielseitig auszubilden. In Nürnberg z. B. arbeitete S. in der Apotheke von J. A. Beurer in Berlin hörte er Chemie bei J. H. Pott ADB XXVI 486 und besonders bei dem ihm sehr befreundeten A. S. Marggraf in Freiberg Mineralogie bei Henkel. 1742 machte sich S. in Paris mit dem ausgezeichneten Pharmaceuten Claude Joseph Geoffroy mit den Botanikern Antoine und Bernard de Jussieu mit Réaumur und anderen Gelehrten bekannt. 1743 bestand er in Straßburg die Apothekerprüfung und trat in das väterliche Geschäft ein. Seine Studien betrieb S. jedoch mit solchem Eifer daß er hauptsächlich durch den Kliniker Sachse seinen Schwiegervater angeleitet 1748 in der medicinischen Facultät promovirt und bald zum außerordentlichen Professor berufen wurde. Auf Grund der Universitätsstatuten und der Ordnungen des Thomasstiftes erhielt Spielmann 1756 die vielbegehrte Professur der Eloquenz; pro forma hatte er sich mit griechischer und lateinischer Poesie zu befassen. Doch wurde ihm 1759 eine ordentliche Professur der Medicin übertragen welche ihm die Verpflichtung auferlegte auch über Chemie Pharmakognosie Materia medica und Botanik zu lesen so wie den botanischen Garten zu leiten. Daß er nebenbei namentlich seit des Vaters Tode 1748. die Apotheke fortführte kam seinen Vorlesungen zu gute; sie wurden wie es heißt in dem schon oben erwähnten Eckhause gehalten. In der Histoire de l'Académie royale des Sciences et Belles Lettres Année 1758 Berlin Haude & Spener 1765 105 bis 128 veröffentlichte Spielmann einen bemerkenswerthen Bericht über das elsässische Erdöl unter dem Titel: Sur le Bitume d'Alsace. Er verglich den flüchtigen Antheil von 0808 spec. Gewicht mit den ätherischen Oelen und besprach auch die Fluorescenz der schwerer flüchtigen Antheile. Spielmann war zuerst 1745 mit einer Tochter des Professors der Medicin Joh. Bapt. Sachse in Straßburg verheirathet und nach deren Tode mit einer Tochter des Straßburger Kaufmanns Joh. Daniel Engelhardt. Trotz seiner so außerordentlich vielseitigen Thätigkeit verfaßte S. eine Reihe größerer und kleinerer Schriften deren vollständiges Verzeichniß sich in den hiernach angeführten Schriften von Wittwer Oberlin und Dechambre findet. Er machte sich zuerst durch Untersuchungen der Mineralquellen von Niederbronn Sulzbach und Petersthal bekannt hierauf besonders durch die "Institutiones Chemiae" 1763 die "Institutiones Materiae medicae" 1774 und die "Pharmacopoea generalis" 1783. Ferner "Prodromus Florae Argentinensis" 1766. Nach seinem Tode 10. September 1783 erschien in Leipzig eine Sammlung seiner kleinen medicinischen und chemischen Schriften und 1785 veröffentlichte Johann Jacob S. der Sohn Jacob Reinbold's. eine deutsche Uebersetzung der Materia medica des letzteren unter dem Titel: "Anleitung zur Kenntniß der Arzneimittel zum Gebrauche der Vorlesungen". In a very good external condition and in fine internal condition. A wide-margined copy untrimmed. Exceptionally bright interior; crisp plates. ~ The first and only enlarged edition of this work. Beautifully illustrated this edition has an extended number of plates with a total of 912 coin impressions on 76 copperplates; 2 engraved frontispieces one engraved bust portrait and a remarkable suite of 13 exquisite equestrian emperor portraits engraved by C. de Passe after Johannes Stradanus Jan van der Straeten 1523-1605. The work went through several editions was first printed in Antwerp in 1615 and 1627 Beller; later in Berlin in 1705 Rüdiger. In 1738 publisher Martin Schagen got the publishing rights and issued the present copy. He could now reset the entire work and print it in elegant quarto format add the Johannes Stradanus suite of portraits extra suite of coin illustrations and allow the plates the freedom to remain bound separately from the text. The edition was printed on handsome laid paper with ample margins and the strikes of the plates are remarkably more beautiful than these of their predecessors. Bie's study of Roman coins in an enlarged quarto edition with Smids' famous portrait gallery of the emperors on horseback engraved by Crispijn van de Passe from works by Jan van der Straet Johannes Stradanus along with twelve additional plates of coins. 4to in full modern calf with five raised bands gilt title to maroon morocco spine label and decorative gilt ruled boards. Light wear to the leather. Moderate foxing and offsetting. Coins are numbered in pencil with occasional marginal notation. Biographical detail added in pencil to the lower margin of the portraits of the emperors.
