Moses Browne editor of the 1750 edition and John Hawkins editor of the 1760 edition were likely both influenced to publish new editions of the Angler by Dr. Samuel Johnson the famous literary master. Browne produced a second edition of his version in 1759 leading to a dispute with Hawkins whose 1760 version was already being printed at the time. Each editor boasted that their version was the only correct one and Browne accused Hawkins of copying images and biographical information from his earlier version. Despite this controversy the 18th century editions introduced new context for the work in a new century as well as contemporary illustrations indicating the beginning of a revival for The Compleat Angler. The artwork is finely detailed and besides being beautifully scenic gives a vivid sense of how harbors looked at the time and the life around them. A curiosity is the title gives an 1824 date but the plates which have small captions at the base of the images generally give 1825 dates March 1 1825. Condition: title page heavily toned. All plates including title have foxing as we believe is always found in this collection. Cloth binding somewhat rubbed and has moderate wear. Henry Moses unknown

Title page contains an image of Jacob being reunited with Joseph in Egypt. This image is also used by the contemporary Amsterdam printer Joseph Athias in his Bible. This is a cabalistic commentary on the Five Books of Moses. sic. The Pentateuch. The author Samuel b. Moses was the head of the rabbinical court in Savislovitz in Lithuania. He had previously written a commentary on Psalms called "Yad Shemu'el." A second edition of “Shem Shemu'el†was printed in Podgorza in 1896. This is a cabalistic commentary on the Five Books of Moses. Some rubbing to extremities with a bit of wear to spine ends and corners a few minor tears to wrappers. Light browning to text occasional light foxing dampstains to a few leaves two leaves have clean tears light soiling to title page. Early annotations and signatures to title page interior otherwise clean. $650. Only edition. "Moses Thacher sometimes spelled Thatcher charged Pond with slander. Pond pleaded not guilty and alleged truth as a defense. The jury found for the plaintiff and awarded $5.00 in damages and $1.25 in costs" Cohen. After the trial Thacher left New England and served as pastor in Wysox Pennsylvania and in Courtland and Cayuga Counties in New York. The trials attracted a fair amount of attention; according to Cohen it was discussed in three pamphlets. All are scarce. Cambridge-style paneled calf spine gilt in six compartments very skillfully relaid red morocco lettering piece gilt edges speckled red. An excellent example in a handsome contemporary binding with pages and plates fresh bright and all but free of foxing. Henrey 40 and pp. 116-118. Goldsmiths' 6265. Kress Library 3011. Originally published in 1676 going through several editions the final one in 1724. Cook gives rudimentary designs for avenues walks and lawns in the strict geometric manner of George London and Henry Wise partners at the celebrated Brompton Park Nursery which Cook helped found. After John Evelyn whose own pioneering works on tree cultivation was published in 1664 visited the Earl of Essex in the spring of 1680 and toured the gardens he praised in his diary the "incomparable collection of the choicest fruits" and called Cook "so skillful an artist." Some fifty years later another commentator and gardener noted "Cooke's is indeed an excellent book and one that has done more good in the nursery and forest way than any other that I know of." N. B. Landscape small folio 19 x 28 cm; 10 etched plates of various London dockyards foxed and age-toned throughout; publisher's illustrated wrappers 'Nos 5 & 6' MS in pen to top left of upper wrapper dated Dec 1 1824 but some prints dated March 1 1825 spine split but holding covers worn and chipped.<br /> Parts 5 & 6 of Henry Moses' d.1870 Sketches of Shipping a series of views depicting London's dockyards towards the end of the Age of Sail. An advertisement in the Quarterly Review 1826 shows that Moses had by then published six parts of his Sketches each containing five views with a further two series announced. <br /><br />An 'eminent artist distinguished for the neatness and purity of outline' Moses found fame as one of the engravers attached to the British Museum.
