1824WRCAM22365Cincinnati 1824. 160pp. Contemporary calf red leather label chipped. Some minor scuffing to extremities. Foxed. A good copy. Second edition after the first of the previous year. "Guest a revolutionary soldier came to Cincinnati in 1817 and gives some account of his residence there. His voyages were to the Georgia and the Carolina coasts" - Howes. During the Revolution Guest had served in the militia unit which captured the noted partisan Col. Lincoln as well as John Graves Simcoe in New Jersey in October 1779. Many of the poems relate to the Revolution e.g. Gen. Washington Col. Simcoe's expedition etc. The journal which records three distinct travels begins on page eighty-three and describes trips to Cuba and the Bahamas in the 1780s a trek from New Brunswick to Canada in 1796 and a trip from New Brunswick to Cincinnati in 1817. Felcone states that only some copies of the second edition include a plate. The copy at hand does not have such a plate and there is no evidence that one has been removed. HOWES G456. THOMSON 471. 18326356Montreal: 14 December 1832. Very Good/A note of accounts between two brothers both powerful businessmen in the burgeoning city of Montreal. The document reads in part: "Alexander Hart in account current with Moses Hart. " The figures list balances payments compensations charges including for "1/3 burial wall" and totals. Moses Hart's autograph appears next to the total. The docket is in the hand of Alexander Hart. The Hart family was a major force in Montreal trade and commerce between the 18th and 19th centuries. 2 leaves 163 x 200 mm; first page blank. Docket on last page. The first page appoints a board of three officers to inspect a quartermasters store while the second page details their findings in favor of the quartermaster in question. Dated May 22 Proceedings of a Board of Survey convened at Chattanooga Tennessee in obedience to the following orderSpecial Orders No 56 A Board of Survey composed of the following named Officers is appointed to meet at 9.30 A.M. on the 25th inst. at the office of Capt. S. P. Bradford aaqm to examine and report upon Forage for which he is responsible. Capt. C.H. Bryant 68th Ind. Vols Wm Abdill 16th U.S.C. Inf. 2nd Lieut M Buzzell 16th U.S.C. Inf By Order of Brig. Genl. H. M. Judahdated May 25 The Board met pursuant to the above order. Present Capt. C. H. Bryant 68th Ind. Vos. Capt. Wm. J. Abdill 16th U.S.C. Inf and 2nd Lieut M. Buzzell 16th U.S.C. Inf The Board then proceeded to inquire into the condition of the following articles of Quartermaster stores for which Capt. S. P. Bradford A.A.Q.M. is responsible. Viz:- 72.00 Seven Thousand Two Hundred lbs. corn. It is the opinion of the Board after a careful examination of the above mentioned Quartermasters stores which were found to be utterly spoiled and totally unfit for use caused by heating in bulk that Capt. S. P. Bradford A.A.Q.M. is in no way responsible for said damage and that he should not be held accountable for said Q.M. stores. Note: Henry Moses Judah was not Jewish. His father was a Parish Minister in an Episcopal Church of which Henry was a member of the congregation. He fought with bravery and distinction during the Mexican War but suffered heavily during the Indian campaigns and Civil War due to his raging alcoholism.
