187021459London and Berlin: Asher & Co 1870. First edition. Hardcover. vg. 8vo. XIII 146 pp. in English XV in Arabic 132 pp. in Hebrew. Red cloth with gold lettering on spine. Signature of the late Leon J. Leibreich the influential Professor of Theology at Hebrew Union College who has a prize for liturgy endowed in his name on title page. Work was originally written in Arabic by Judah ben David Hayyuj. This book includes both the Hebrew translation by Moses Gikitilia of Cordova and the English translation by John W. Nutt. Minor age wear to exterior. Binding has been expertly reinforced with green binder's tape along front endpapers. Book is in very good condition. Judah ben David Hayyuj c. 945 - 1000 was a Spanish-Jewish grammarian. His thorough knowledge of Arabic grammatical literature led him to apply to the Hebrew grammar the theories elaborated by Arabic grammarians and thus to become the founder of the scientific study of that discipline. The preceding scholars had found the greatest difficulty in accounting by the laws of Hebrew morphology for the divergences existing between the regular or so-called "strong" verbs and the "weak" verbs. A hopeless confusion appeared to reign here in Hebrew; and much ingenuity was spent in endeavoring to discover the principles that controlled the conjugation of the verbs. To substantiate his theories he wrote the treatises upon which his reputation chiefly rests the Kitab al-Af'al Dhawat Huruf al-Lin The Book of Verbs Containing Weak Letters and Kitab al-Af'al Dhawat al-Mathalain The Book of Verbs Containing Double Letters which comprise this particular book. Index. Slight DJ wear and soiling. Inscribed by Kunstler on the title page which reads To Aaron--With best wishes. Bill Kunstler 11/23/94. Non-author gift inscriptions on fep. William Moses Kunstler July 7 1919 – September 4 1995 was a radical lawyer and civil rights activist. Kunstler was an active member of the National Lawyers Guild the American Civil Liberties Union ACLU and a co-founder of the Law Center for Constitutional Rights CCR. Kunstler's defense of the Chicago Seven from 1969–1970 led The New York Times to label him "the country's most controversial .lawyer". Kunstler was well known for defending members of the Revolutionary Communist Party Catonsville Nine Black Panther Party Weather Underground the Attica Prison rioters and the American Indian Movement. Sheila Isenberg is the author of the groundbreaking Women Who Love Men Who Kill and Muriel’s War. Derived from a Kirkus review: In this autobiography Kunstler radical lawyer extraordinaire is once again arguing a difficult case—this time his own. As defense attorney in some of this country's highest profile political courtroom dramas throughout his astounding career Kunstler has chosen to champion political causes rather than people—causes that were often very unpopular. His rallying cry is the defense of the underdog those he feels are most rejected by society and who therefore risk missing out on that all-American right: a good defense. But his hard-hitting remarks here about the corruption and racism of the American judiciary is present in a dry narrative that belies the passion it is intended to convey. He intriguingly calls the Kennedys ``dangerous'' and his criticism of another.lawyer former NAACP director Jack Greenberg smacks of in- fighting. Kunstler's career has followed the political times. He gives an interesting if idiosyncratic introduction to legal politics Kunstler seems focused on his outsider status. One would have hoped for even more than is presented here from a man who has stood up so often for justice in courtrooms. Derived from a Publishers Weekly review: Notable is his candor: Kunstler admits to craving the limelight and enjoying the trappings of celebrity as when he moved left during the civil-rights era and became radicalized during the 1969 Chicago Seven trial. After thoughtfully telling of his family youth and early legal career Kunstler relates a saga that includes an enormous cast: Martin Luther King Lenny Bruce the Berrigan brothers Leonard Peltier the Central Park ``jogger case'' defendant Yusuf Salaam and El Sayyid Nosair the accused killer of Rabbi Meir Kahane. Though Kunstler never questions the veracity of his clients he's mostly convincing in portraying himself as a Don Quixote in a system biased toward the rich.
