Henry Abraham Chatelein was a cartographer active in the 1700s working in the tradition of European copper-engraved cartography. Their maps are valued by collectors for their historical accuracy and decorative quality.This original copperplate engraving with original hand coloring depicts the region of Deutschland published in Nürnberg Henry Chatelein 1709. The map records the political and geographic boundaries of the region as understood in 1709 offering a fascinating window into the history of German territorial organization. Original full speckled calf 5 raised bands gilt compartments red leather spine labels sprinkled red edges. Edited with a preface by R. Hurd who was Bishop of Worcester 1781-1808. Margins of front pages and rear pages tanned due to the leather turn-ins contemporary ink signature of Margaret Hippisley dated 1774 and in the same hand Henry Hippisley and a modern ink signature unnamed armorial crest mounted to pastedowns. Covers worn and rubbed hinges cracked though still tight primarily to vol. 1 which has dark brown staining along the top margins of the cover and dark staining from what looks like from moisture at the bottom corner and lower margin of rear cover interior not affected spines browned with gilt dull tiny worm hole starting at extreme lower edge of rear pastedown in vol.2 and diminishing within to a pin-prick at p. 39 in the whitespace only not affecting text. There was a second edition Lovanni 1779. Stieda calls this "a brilliant work." Abraham Kaau Boerhaave the prominent physician studied medicine at Leyden under his uncle Hermann Boerhaave. After graduating and practicing medicine at The Hague for several years Kaau-Boerhaave went to St. Petersburg where he was appointed professor of theoretical and practical medicine and pharmacy.
