Speaking to 1500 people at a local meeting-house Bishop in rousing rhetoric denounced the state and national Federalist party for its leadership social assumptions and class prejudices. He argued that the Federalists were deluding the people in order to enslave them under a monarchy and castigated the union of church and state in Connecticut charging the clergy with preaching Federalist propaganda.
