Abraham Thornton a bricklayer was accused of the rape and murder of Mary Ashford when she was found dead the morning after a dance where the two had been seen together. Thornton admitted that the two had been consensually intimate but denied the charges of rape and murder. Eyewitness accounts backed up his story and in the absence of other evidence he was acquitted of both charges. Public outcry around his acquittal led to Mary's brother William invoking an "appeal of murder." This uncommon legal practice allowed a retrial of a defendant acquitted for murder but crucially gave the defendant the right to trial by battle. Thornton invoked that right and was released after William Ashford declined the challenge. The case resulted in the abolition of appeals by murder and thus the end of trial by battle. Despite his protestations of innocence the public was thoroughly convinced of his guilt. Unable to lead a normal life Thornton moved to the United States and settled in Baltimore Maryland. One of the former owners of our copy may have been John Bright 1811-1889 a r. unknown

There were numerous editions thereafter with texts in various languages; the printing of such was taken over by Chrstoffel Plantijn in 1579 . Ortelius himself drew all the maps in manuscript before passing them to the printers. there is conjecture that he may have engraved some of the plates as well The 1595 Latin text edition is the most complete produced during his lifetime containing all the maps of the 1593 edition plus those of the the"Additamentum" and the"Pareragon" or Ancient geography. The " Additamenta" were supplements to the original Atlas; at the same time Ortelius replaced some maps with new ones showing the same place; some plates were also reworked . Ortelius was Geographer Royal To Phillip II of Spain from 1575. He also worked closely with Braun & Hogenburg on the "Civitas Orbis Terarum". Abraham Ortelius was a Flemish scholar who moved to Antwerp to become a bookseller and cartographer. This map of ancient Spain is from his PARERGON published as an appendix to the THEATRUM ORBIS TERRARUM the world's first true atlas as well as the most authoritative and commercially successful atlas of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Although it is dated 1586 in one cartouche this map actually is a second state printed between 1601 and 1612 as indicated by the stipple engraving in the ocean & seas and by the line through the word "Cinniana" in line 8 of the descriptive text within the cartouche in the lower right corner. The map is in very good condition: generally clean and bright with barely a hint of toning and minor soiling limited to the blank margins. Original copper engraving published 1598 in a French edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Finely hand-colored in wash and outline. Decorative doublepage map showing six islands in the Mediterranean Islands Sicily Sardinia Corfu Malta Djerba Elba. Sicily is prominently displayed in the center of the map above the title cartrouche. Ortelius was born on 14 April 1527 in the city of Antwerp which was then in the Habsburg Netherlands modern-day Belgium. The Orthellius family were originally from Augsburg a Free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1535 the family had fallen under suspicion of Protestantism. Following the death of Ortelius's father his uncle Jacobus van Meteren returned from religious exile in England to take care of Ortelius. Abraham remained close to his cousin Emanuel van Meteren who would later moved to London. In 1575 he was appointed geographer to the king of Spain Philip II on the recommendation of Arias Montanus who vouched for his orthodoxy. He travelled extensively in Europe and is specifically known to have traveled throughout the Seventeen Provinces; in southern western northern and eastern Germany e.g. 1560 15751576; France 15591560; England and Ireland 1576; and Italy 1578 and perhaps twice or thrice between 1550 and 1558. Beginning as a map-engraver in 1547 he entered the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke as an illuminator of maps. He supplemented his income trading in books prints and maps and his journeys included yearly visits to the Frankfurt book and print fair where he met Gerardus Mercator in 1554. In 1560 however when travelling with Mercator to Trier Lorraine and Poitiers he seems to have been attracted largely by Mercator's influence towards the career of a scientific geographer. This booklet is Signed by Walkowitz along top margin of its cover. The book itself is signed by Walkowitz in presentation to Mr and Mrs. Phillip Shaw and dated April 7 1946. ALSO LAID IN : 5x6 inch original watercolor of a young woman's face and torso with presentation signature to the Shaws written in top lefthand corner on image itself by Walkowitz and signed in the image in lower righthand corner by "A Walkowitz 1908". The portrait is lovely - the woman has bright red ips and strong blue dress. The watercolor portrait is professionally mounted on heavy stock 7-1/2 x 10 inches. Pictures available on request. In this book which would be the reason of his discharge as professor he opposes the '20 posities' imposed by the trustees of the University and the Burgomaster of Leiden on which it was forbidden to lecture. These forbidden positions included the works by Coccejus Wittichius Cartesius Von Wolzogen: the last 'position' reads that philosophy is an explainer of the Word of God. Very rare. One of the many editions of these Gebete which are translated from the Hebrew the chief work of Isaac Euchel one of the most important German jews of the Enlightenment. The original edition of the Gebete appeared in 1786 in Königsberg other editions: Vienna 1790-98; there exists also a 'Zweite Auflage': Berlin 1799. Euchel has translated the original and until then obscure old Hebrew Book of prayers for German and Polish Jews. It contains prayers for all occasions and for all times of the day including songs and psalms. After the prayers follows "Massecheth Aboth" in 6 parts teaching the Jewish laws and the rules for a virtuous life. In the preface the publisher explains that the first edition of this excellent translation from the Hebrew is long since sold out. This and the fact that many Israelites especially the women do not have suficient knowledge of the Hebrew language and that also many Christians visit the Synagoge which by the graciousness of the Emperor was recently established at Vienna convinced the publisher that the book will find a wide public.With a manuscript owner's inscription on the recto of the first free flyleaf "Salomon Landesman Teplitz. 18. Decemb. 1830" and some slightly faded annotations on the final free flyleaf and the back paste-down. The binding is worn internally very slightly foxed. The translation was made by the minor Utrecht poet Abraham Godart fl. 1666-1683 after the French translation which had appeared in 1682 in The Hague Céremonies et Coustumes parmi les Juifs The Hague Adriaan Moetjens 1682 and which was made by Richard Simon 1638-1712 a French priest member of the Oratorians who was an influential biblical critic orientalist and controversialist - Simon was early at odds with the Port-Royalists and Antoine Arnauld himself - using many pseudonyms such as here the pseudonym Simon Ville.The French translator Richard Simon added his own comments in a separate book Comparaison des ceremonies des Juifs which was also printed in 1682 in The Hague by the same publisher of Modenes work Adriaan Moetjens. The Dutch translator Abraham Godart also translated Simons additional text and the Amsterdam printer Timotheus ten Hoorn not only combined these two works in one book but also added the frontispiece and the plates of the 1682 French translation in reverse.
