The Handbuch der Stereochemie 1894 is a foundational work in the field of stereochemistry published at a time when the discipline was still emerging as a distinct branch of chemistry. This book was among the earliest comprehensive reference works on stereochemistry consolidating knowledge on spatial arrangements of molecules and their effects on chemical properties and reactions. Carl Bischoff was the son of a factory owner and initially studied medicine from 1873 before switching to chemistry in Würzburg under Johannes Wislicenus Wiesbaden in 1876 under Carl Remigius Fresenius and Heidelberg in 1877 under Robert Bunsen. He collaborated with Max Conrad under Wislicenus and followed him to Leipzig in 1885 as his assistant where he also worked as a Privatdozent as he had previously done in Würzburg. In 1887 he became a professor at the Polytechnic in Riga succeeding Wilhelm Ostwald. Paul Walden 1863-1957 was a prominent chemist primarily recognized for discovering the "Walden inversion" a phenomenon where the stereochemical configuration of a molecule flips during a chemical reaction alongside his contributions to the "Walden rule" related to ionic conductivity in solutions and is also credited with the synthesis of the first room-temperature ionic liquid making him a significant figure in the field of stereochemistry and physical chemistry.
