Possibly after the same painting on which the woodcut portrait in his Compendium Musicae of 1632 is based.

Gumpelzhaimer spent most of his active life in Augsburg where he was Kantor and Präzeptor at the school and church of St. Anna from 1581 until his death. "Gumpelzhaimer was probably best known to German musicians of and after his time through his Compendium musicae. The richness of musical activity of St Anna is indicated not only by Gumpelzhaimer's music but also by the extensive holdings of the church library during his 44 years there. A handwritten inventory was started by Gumpelzhaimer in 1620 and continued by Faust in 1625. This list includes in addition to many printed collections several large manuscript books of polyphonic music in score notation. Two of these books have survived one begun in 1599 and the other completed in 1624. They were copied out mostly by Gumpelzhaimer and contain compositions by many prominent musicians of the time." Early turquoise blue wrappers small printed label applied to upper cover; extremities worn rubbed. Very good. RARE. First edition of the first serious English study of ergot of rye which was a folk remedy known to be effective for pregnant mothers to ease the birth and "control postpartum haemorrhage." Neale studied medicine at Edinburgh earning his degree in 1802. "In 1806 he was appointed as a physician to the army and saw considerable service during the Peninsula War under Sir John Moore and Sir Arthur Wellesley. In 1809 he published an account of his experiences in Letters from Portugal and Spain. In 1814 he settled in Exeter where he remained for the next 10 years apart from a tour of Germany Poland Moldavia and Turkey in 1818 and a short sojourn in Cheltenham in 1820 made brief by the fact that he rashly and publicly questioned the medicinal value of the spa waters of that town. In 1828 he published a monograph on the use of ergot of rye as a remedy in certain states of the uterus.' Four years later he died in Dunkirk in 1832." Dunn. / "Epidemics of St Anthony's fire due to ergot of rye had been recognised since the middle ages but the effect of ergot on the uterus was not recognised by the medical profession until 1688 when Camerarius mentioned that women in certain parts of Germany were in the habit of employing this sort of diseased grain to accelerate parturition. One hundred years passed before Tessier in France once more drew the attention of doctors to a similar practice among the midwives around Lyon. From then on medical interest in the subject increased and 50 years later Neale was able to review 720 reported cases in which ergot had been used in Europe and North America mostly with success either to expedite delivery of the baby or placenta or to control postpartum haemorrhage." Dunn. / In July 1805 Adam Neale c.1780-1832 travelled to Turkey to take a position as physician to the British embassy in Constantinople were he arrived in March 1806. This is a description of the overland journey to Jassy in Moldavia the Danube and then via the Black Sea several plates depict villages along the Black Sea to Constantinople. His observations on Turkey include descriptions of the manners and customs of the people the navy fishery and the plague which broke out regularly in Constantinople. This is one of the most vivid and readable of all accounts of Constantinople. He also discourses on some of the renegades present in Constantinople at the beginning of the 19th century Koç Collection 208. SEE: Peter M. Dunn "Adam Neale c1780-1832 and ergot of rye." 3845ADAM BADEAU 1831-1895. Badeau was an Union Army officer who served on Ulysses Grant’s staff during the Civil War. AL. 5pg. 5†x 8â€. Feby 18 1891. New York City. An autograph letter unsigned in the handwriting of Adam Badeau. It is addressed to General William Sherman’s son Father Thomas Sherman four days after the legendary general’s death. Badeau wrote “I hardly dare intrude on you at this sacred moment…I am willing to offer my sympathy to you are your dear brother and sisters. Now while the whole country mourns I will not admit that after those who were closest in blood there is no who loved or admired your great father more…than I. Surely no one had more peculiar opportunities to know the wisdom and the genius of your great father to test his full and loyal nature. My life…should for twenty years made me contemplate his career and the constant assistance he gave me by…the informal knowledge I had…in him the solder was truly the development of the man…know not only the soldier by the man. He came towards Genl Grant…so magnanimous and so difficult…unsurpassed for freedom from moral defect. In all my…peculiar knowledge of his character and career I never found a manner a shadow of a vice…My heart has spoken in spite of me. I only want to say to all the sons and daughters of Genl Sherman that after themselves and the others closest in blood no one in the nation has better cause to mourn because no one has more cause to love and admire his memory. Your father and mother were both my friends and you will let me tell you all that…â€. There are some additional words in another’s handwriting. There are a few crossouts and two faint folds that affect little. unknown books

177717132London 1777. Copper engraving. Engraved by Roe. In excellent condition. An elegant engraving of the elaborate ceiling in the dining room of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn's celebrated house in St. James's Square London.

Robert and his brother James Adam forever changed the face of British architecture by introducing innovative Classical design ideas. From 1754-57 Robert lived in Italy where he had a long productive friendship with Piranesi which was inspirational for both men. Adam's first book on Diocletian's palace in Dalmatia is clearly very like the archaeological investigations Piranesi was making at the same time of similar ruins. Piranesi's friendship and passion for Roman Classicism were seminal influences on Adam and the greatest single factor other than his own talent in the work Adam produced on his return to England. Upon his return the brothers launched their career by building the Adelphi from the Thames to the Strand in London which although not a commercial success at the time included one of London's most cherished buildings the Adlephi Theatre. Together the Adam brothers designed and built some of the most famous buildings in England including such bastions of English architecture as Kenwood House Keddlestone Manor and Syon House. To the interiors of their English country houses the Adams brought wonderful ornamental elements in niches lunettes festoons and reliefs. Their classically designed buildings were so numerous in London that they changed the prevailing feel of the city and established their brand of neo-Classicism as the model of elegance and importance. It is asserted that the brothers originated the concept of the uniform facade attached to the typical English row house an architectural device that distinguishes London buildings. This monumental contribution is evidenced in the Adams' designs for Portland Place and Fitzroy Square and these were used as architectural models for the whole city. The brothers brought their talents into other areas by designing furniture to complement their beautiful interiors and by creating and publishing a treatise of design entitled 'Works in Architecture'. The work was published in three volumes over an extended span of time beginning in 1773 with the final volume being published posthumously in 1822.

Cf. Brunet I.47; cf.
