A glimpse inside the behind-the-scenes process of French press and the attention paid to prolific French figures of cinema notably Rene Clair. Maryse Martin whose film credits include "The Happy Road" 1957 "Bonjour Tristesse 1958 and several films each for directors Jacqueline Audry Maurice Labro and Jean Gourguet was a popular "B" actress who played supporting roles in over 40 films. She presumably worked for a press agency involved in publication of film reviews press kits photographs and more. Several letters are represented addressed to and from Maryse from persons like Gay-Lussac Gordon Reid A. Sergio Berrocal George L. George Monsieur Bergougnous Monsieur Lourau J.D. van Leeuwen Edmundo Duran members of UniFrance Film Alessandro Ferrau R. Betmalle Clare Simpson Pierre Lazareff Francois Timmory I. Review copy edition of 500 copies quarto size 114 pp. signed by Joyce Lancaster Wilson and Adrian Wilson. The Press in Tuscany Alley was one of San Francisco's small private press jewels. Adrian Wilson 1924-1988 was both a book designer and a scholar authoring "The Design of Books" which is regarded as a classic text on book design. As the New York Times stated in his obituary "Mr. Wilson designed and printed scores of books and became a mentor to younger men and women eager to learn the printer's craft. His many volumes while little-known to the general public are famous among print connoisseurs and many are collector's items." When Adrian Wilson donated old proofs of "A Child's Garden of Verses" for a work not as of that date printed to the Silverado Museum devoted to the works of Robert Louis Stevenson the founder and curator urged him to publish a limited edition of the verses. They were the ones who suggested that he contact the Beinecke Library Yale University which had in their archives nine poems of Stevenson's that had "been eliminated from the first and all later editions"; the Beinecke provided copies of the verses and permission to print them and hence this book was born. A fine engraving of the sedan chair designed for Queen Charlotte. Robert and his brother James Adam forever changed the face of British architecture by introducing innovative Classical design ideas. From 1754-57 Robert lived in Italy where he had a long productive friendship with Piranesi which was inspirational for both men. Adam's first book on Diocletian's palace in Dalmatia is clearly very like the archaeological investigations Piranesi was making at the same time of similar ruins. Piranesi's friendship and passion for Roman Classicism were seminal influences on Adam and the greatest single factor other than his own talent in the work Adam produced on his return to England. Upon his return the brothers launched their career by building the Adelphi from the Thames to the Strand in London which although not a commercial success at the time included one of London's most cherished buildings the Adlephi Theatre. Together the Adam brothers designed and built some of the most famous buildings in England including such bastions of English architecture as Kenwood House Keddlestone Manor and Syon House. To the interiors of their English country houses the Adams brought wonderful ornamental elements in niches lunettes festoons and reliefs. Their classically designed buildings were so numerous in London that they changed the prevailing feel of the city and established their brand of neo-Classicism as the model of elegance and importance. It is asserted that the brothers originated the concept of the uniform facade attached to the typical English row house an architectural device that distinguishes London buildings. This monumental contribution is evidenced in the Adams' designs for Portland Place and Fitzroy Square and these were used as architectural models for the whole city. The brothers brought their talents into other areas by designing furniture to complement their beautiful interiors and by creating and publishing a treatise of design entitled 'Works in Architecture'.
