Questo spiega la ricerca da parte sua di un'opera come l'altarolo con le Storie della Vera Croce di Adam Elsheimer, raffinato pittore tedesco attivo nella prima metà del XVII secolo. L'opera, composta da piccoli dipinti su argento, era uscito dalle collezioni granducali attraverso un dono e, scomposto, era stato venduto sul mercato antiquario; oggi, grazie agli sforzi dello Stadel Museum, l'altarolo è stato ricomposto e montato all'interno di una cornice che restituisce all'opera la sua forma originale.
