Henry Stamper (1802?-1887), master bookbinder, was an associate of Bedford, Lewis, Clarke and Morrell; indeed he may have succeeded Bedford as manager of the Lewis bindery, and his later business passed to Morrell. März 1578 in Frankfurt am Main; † 11. Dezember 1610 in Rom) war ein bedeutender deutscher Barockmaler des frühen 17. Jahrhunderts. ... / Hendrick Goudt (* um 1583 in Den Haag; † 17. Dezember 1648 in Utrecht) war ein holländischer Maler und Kupferstecher des Goldenen Zeitalters. ... (wiki) // Zwischen 1605 und 1607 war der Holländer Hendrik Goudt zu Elsheimer gestossen, Sohn des Arend Goudt, der Hofmeister bei Louise de Coligny und von Heinrich IV. von Frankreich geadelt war. Hendrik war 1583 geboren, also nur fünf Jahre jünger als Elsheimer, dessen Schüler und Hausgenosse er wurde; schliesslich war er auch sein Geldgeber, der ungeduldig auf die künstlerischen Erzeugnisse des mehr und mehr in sich gekehrten Lehrers wartete. Goudt war ein ausgezeichneter Kupferstecher und reproduzierte meisterhaft sieben Gemälde Elsheimers, hatte aber auch den Ehrgeiz in Malerei und Zeichnung seinem verehrten Vorbild gleichzukommen. Er muss eine labile, begeisterungsfähige, von gesellschaftlichem Dünkel nicht freie Natur gewesen sein, die jedoch keine eigene Persönlichkeit zu entwickeln vermochte. Nach dem Tode Elsheimers kehrte er mit den ihm gehörenden Gemälden und Zeichnungen seines Meisters in seine Heimat zurück und hielt seit 1612 in Utrecht einen, wohl dem Vater verdankten grossen Hausstand mit seinen drei Schwestern. Er war jedoch schon seit Ende 1620 unheilbar schwachsinnig und arbeitsunfähig. Die Einfühlung in seinen Lehrer bis zur Selbstaufgabe darf man wohl mit einer Veranlagung in Verbindung bringen, in der der Keim zur späteren geistigen Erkrankung enthalten war. Jahrelange enge Gemeinschaft kann da leicht eine Art von Doppelgängertum erzeugen. Noch in seiner Umnachtung belebte sich Goudt, wenn er seinen Besitz an Elsheimerwerken zeigen konnte. An dem übersehbaren Kontingent der Land-schaftszeichnungen soll ein neuer Anlauf zur Lösung der schwierigen Aufgabe beide Hände voneinander zu scheiden gewagt werden. Die Braunschweiger Landschaftszeichnungen. Vier einander zunächst ausserordentlich ähnlich erscheinende Landschaften des Braunschweiger Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museums, ausgeführt in Feder und Bister, geben Gelegenheit das Problem aufzurollen (Abb. 1, 3, 4). Früher hielt man sie für Zeichnungen Elsheimers, heute ist man geneigt alle Goudt zuzusprechen. Man kann sie thematisch als Dorflandschaften bezeichnen, denen aber der grosse Laubbaum, die Leidenschaft des Barockzeitalters (als anschauliches Gleichnis von lebendiger Vielheit und Einheit), einen Zug zum Bedeutsamen, "Klassischen", mitgeteilt hat. Das Blättchen mit dem Maultierreiter (Abb. 1) hebt sich vorteilhaft heraus. Die Baumriesen des Mittelgrundes und Gebüsch wie Staffage des Vordergrundes bilden eine leicht ansteigende Raumgasse. Auf ihr und dem mannigfachen Laubwerk ruht voll und schimmernd das seitlich einfallende Licht. Die von Ketten kleiner Bögen konturierten Bäume mit ihren organisch sich entfaltenden hellen Laubbüscheln sind zu vollplastischer Wirkung ausgerundet. Seitlich wächst die Dunkelschraffur des Baums mit dem verschatteten Giebelhäuschen zusammen. Diese Merkmale treffen, obwohl angestrebt, nicht in dem hohen Masze auf die drei andern Blätter zu. Der als Gesamtprospekt hübsch und luftig sich ausbreitende Dorfrand (Abb. 4) reiht eine Folge von gleichartigen Bäumen nebeneinander. Auf den mittleren sind die Formeln für das Blätterwerk in öder Wiederholung angewandt. Sie schnurren zu kleinlichem Gekräusel zusammen und bilden gebogene Wülste (statt der echten Laubwölbungen auf Blatt 1). … (30/31)
