1891360862Lipsiae Leipzig Germany: B.G. Teubneri 1891. Hardcover. Fair. 12mo 7" - 7. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy but complete and sturdy and from the library of first A.L. Peck who inscribed his name and date at first free endpaper and then the noted Classicist Peter Morris Green. An apparent First Edition and uber-scarce in the trade there being also only 11 copies in a library as revealed by Worldcat dot org holdings. Bound in brown cloth over boards gilt lettering over an abraded brown leather label at spine. Light soiling and wear to endpapers else clean and bumping to tips. Extensive penciled notations from the former owner to p. 40 clean and unmarked thereafter. Laid in is "A Systematical Bibliography of Sallust 1879-1950by A.D. Leeman provided from E.J. Brill Publisher. Also laid in are four fully annotated in pencil pages of heavy card-stock evincing great erudition and passion in their focus. From another publisher's blurb about a collection of Sallust's life and work "Sallust Gaius Sallustius Crispus 86-35 BCE a Sabine from Amiternum acted against Cicero and Milo as tribune in 52 joined Caesar after being expelled from the Senate in 50 was restored to the senate by Caesar and took part in his African campaign as praetor in 46 and was then appointed governor of New Africa Numidia. Upon his return to Rome he narrowly escaped conviction for malfeasance in office retired from public life and took up historiography. Sallust's two extant monographs take as their theme the moral and political decline of Rome one on the conspiracy of Catiline and the other on the war with Jugurtha. Although Sallust is decidedly unsubtle and partisan in analyzing people and events his works are important and significantly influenced later historians notably Tacitus. Taking Thucydides as his model but building on Roman stylistic and rhetorical traditions Sallust achieved a distinctive style concentrated and arresting; lively characterizations especially in the speeches; and skill at using particular episodes to illustrate large general themes." 146 pp. including a full index.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Scattered spotting chiefly marginal with handling wear and finger marks to the margins; a very good example overall. A dramatic interior view of the ceremonial lying-in-state of Napoleon within the chapel of Les Invalides during the Retour des Cendres ceremonies of December 1840. The composition depicts the cortège entering the vast torchlit interior beneath draped mourning hangings military standards chandeliers and the immense illuminated catafalque constructed for the imperial funeral rites. Victor Adam supplied the figures while Arnout executed the architectural lithography from life. The scene formed part of the celebrated Retour en France des Depouilles Mortelles de Napoleon suite issued in Paris immediately following the ceremonies of 1840. . Very Good. The map is clearly labeled with city names and bodies of water providing a comprehensive overview of this final frontier of world exploration. A large inset at the upper left show the territories of Wellington Straight explored by Captains Austin and Perry in 1851. A smaller inset next to it depicts "Beechey Island site of Sir J. Franklin's winter quarters 1845-1846." The map appeared in "Black's General Atlas Of The World." It is in excellent condition with no chips or tears. Minor foxing. Green limp cloth covers decorated on the front cover with an Irish harp in gilt; titling and shamrock decorations on the spine in gilt. Clean text;350 pages. Text is followed by 116 pages of rather fascinating adverts. Front endpapers are a map of Ireland; the rear ones have a listing of Black's other guides.The half-title page has an inked name "Capt. Rogers.1919" and the second free endpaper a peciled name and price dated 1940. One of the interesting features: the fore-edge has several destiation points stamped with a page number. Opening "Killarney" will easily lead one to the fold-out map of the Lakes.The maps are complete but with tears evident. The front gutter has been cracked resulting in a loose feel to the book and would reward a minor reinforcents. . Later Printing. Very Good Minus/No Jacket. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
