First edition this caustic and often satirical memoir of Harada’s 1880-1940 extended stay in New York City in the Progressive Era in which he throws off waspish comments about Coney Island as a garish money trap filled with gaudy boorish amusements such as the rolling ball game inside the Japanese Tea Garden concession although mildly impressed with the electric lighting; rails against the traffic the smells capitalism itself and notably derides American women. Karen Kelsky states that “Harada’s memoirs treat women as the objects of a kind of sexual rage.†She also incorporates a translated passage from Harad who writes “because their society has indiscriminately raised them up too high all American women are arrogant and full of themselves. . . The greatest faults of New York’s women are their rudeness fugyogi and their bad manners busaho. A woman came to New York who said she had previously acted as tutor to the British Royal family but I was so disgusted with her display of these faults that walking down the street with her I lost my patience again and again and wanted to grab her and give her a piece of my mind.†He also slights suffragettes women interested in fashion including cartoon on p. 219 in English with comment that “Women are awful slaves of fashion! they merrily follow the style whether its comfortable becoming or adapted to our climate and customs.†He also includes comments on fallen women crime rates augmented with a series of cartoons of burglars breaking into apartments and subsequently fencing the stolen goods. Nonetheless as evidenced by the many photos and illustrations included he also filled his time with sightseeing to Central Park Federal Hall Grand Central Station Riverside Park Grant’s Tomb the Flatiron Building Statue of Liberty views of the teaming streets filled with automobiles trolleys and ferries in the Hudson. One particular photo also depicts the tenements in the Lower East Side. First edition of this iconic travel poster for Northwest Orient Airlines marketing their premium connection to Manhattan during the jet age capturing the city aglow at night with streetlights building lighting and automobile lighting stretching into the distance. Through the 1950’s and early 1960’s Northwest Orient offered the only one-carrier airline service from Asia through the West Coast to New York. Accompanying the letter is a translation 2pp. 8vo by Colin Jordan with the assistance of Dr Loukas Christodloulos. The letter is of great interest casting light on Leigh Fermor's activities in Crete in the period following the Second World War. The identity of 'Haris' is not immediately apparent: he does not appear to feature in George Psychoundakis's account of the Cretan resistance 'The Cretan Runner' 1955 which was translated by Leigh Fermor. Addressing 'Mr. Leigh Fermor' the author of the letter begins in reproachful terms: 'After my third letter you remain silent. I write now with a big question mark: why this is happening and why you are ignoring my thoughts and my offer in general' He asks Fermor 'for the sake of our friendship and co-operation and for our land of Crete' to guide him in his thoughts and to advise him in his actions 'and to help me in my efforts against the slanderers and the malevolent enemies of our union'. He desires Leigh Fermor's 'co-operation against the transformation of Crete and Greece my country into a Soviet protectorate.' He proceeds to report on 'the situation that exists': 'The Communist newspaper "Free Crete" has begun again a serious campaign against the English generally and in particular against us Major Fielding Major Alexander Wallace 'Xan' Fielding who like Leigh Fermor was in the SOE in Crete during the war and Kyrios Giorgos. They claim that the crimes of killing a villager from Potamiko Nikos Komi of another from Heraklion prior to the referendum others from Apokoronou and from Hania family murders for revenge and political party murders were done by you that you organized them that is and ordered their execution by your people.' A further claim is that 'from the time of the occupation' Leigh Fermor has been 'organizing here the ground for the occupation of Crete by the English and the creation of military bases since Alexandria is hostile towards Egypt and you are using that against her'. In his view it is easy to refute the Apokorona and Hania murder charges 'since it's commonly known that they were done by locals for revenge and due to political hatred and had nothing whatsoever to do with our work. The murder of the police officer from Heraklion happened before your arrival here in September. As for the killing of Komi at Potamiko the same man wrote a letter that he did it because of personal motives and not following orders from yourself.' He proposes to write 'to the newspapers of the Right-wing here that your visit to Crete was entirely a holiday trip to see your friends and that the villager's murder was done before you came. Also that the Hana murder had other purposes and that you and the English generally have never thought of occupying Crete and that you have always acted from friendship. I will also go to the prison and I will oblige Nikos Komis to sign a letter of protest against the writings of the "Free Crete" newspaper.' Parsons black and white photos and advertisements. Pictorial map printed for the weekend supplement of the Randolph Hearst owned newspaper the Los Angeles Examiner. The map-maker and artist Howard Burke had also worked for the San Francisco Examiner and was known for pictorial maps many with a persuasive or rhetorical edge and as here were designed to shore up American patriotism and defences against a wider world in the increasingly turbulent pre-war 1930s. The caption to this map outlines a multi-billion dollar 25 year proposal by Congressman J. Buell Snyder for a network of coast to coast transcontinental highways "in case of an attack by a foreign power at any point along the border". Buell Snyder earned the soubriquet "the father of superhighways" and during the War he was assigned to a Congressional Committee in charge of appropriations for the War Department. Scarce. . Archive of 89 coated labels sized from 2.25 x 3.5 in. up to 6.25 x 8.5 in. with many in the middle ranges including distinctive 5.25 in. rounds most colour lithographs some with metallic inks nearly all retaining the original adhesive from never having been applied to luggage in assorted shapes many round others rectangular square diamond shaped etc. most on thin coated paper stock all NF condition from the library of Archibald Angus MacDonald 1892-1977 stepson of famed southern California oil man William F. Byrne as well as oil company and drilling equipment company owner and manager of MacDonald & Burns Oil Producers. A delightful and remarkably colourful small archive of fine lithographed and colour printed luggage labels preserved from over three decades of ocean liner travel by the well-to-do California oil family. Their frequent voyages carried them to Hawaii Asia South Asia Africa Europe and the Americas preserving luggage labels souvenir brochures and more along the way. At the time they were an essential advertising campaign largely driven by the popular Grand Hotels and were often illustrated by such renowned commercial and graphic artists as Dan Sweeney and Mario Borgoni. Included amongst these are iconic labels for the historic Park Hotel depicting jockeys racing on the Shanghai Club race track in front of the iconic Art Deco building completed in 1934; The Cathay & The Metropole in Shanghai operated by Cathay Hotels Ltd.; the historic Peninsula Hotel in Kowloon Hong Kong opened in 1928 and founded by the brothers Ellis & Elly Kadoorie still considered one of the finest hotels east of the Suez; or beautiful scenic labels created for the Eastern & Oriental Hotel the “E&O†still considered one of the finest hotels in Southeast Asia and the Oriental Hotel in Kobe Japan. Also present are labels for the Raffles Hotel in Singapore originally opened in 1887 Mrs. Ch’ien’s Guest House located originally not far from the Legation Quarter in Peking Maidens Hotel Delhi the splendid Clark’s Hotel Benares Varanasi still considered the finest heritage hotel in the city and the Imperial Hotel of New Delhi opened in 1936 designed by F.B. Blomfield. The MacDonald’s visited the Philippines several times often staying the Manila Hotel Hawaii where the Royal Hawaiian and the Kiluaea Volcano House were their places of choice and frequently stated at The Biltmore in Los Angeles after returning from trips the Plaza in Buenos Aires the Waldorf in New York and many of the major European Hotels. Also present are labels for the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo Sri Lanka founded in 1865 featuring the historic south wing designed by Edward Skinner and one of the oldest hotels East of Suez. South Africa was a stopover during their 1952 Great Africa-India Cruise on the RMS Caronia and labels include Polley’s Hotel Pretoria the Imperial Hotel in Pietermaritzburg and the North Western Hotel Livingstone N.
