A wonderfully evocative and patriotic illustrated broadside advertising a steamer trip down the Connecticut River from Hartford to Lyme then on to Greenport or Sag Harbor by connection to another steamer or on to New London by car and eventually back to Hartford on Independence Day in 1859. The woodcut illustration shows the steamship L. BOARDMAN in action with smoke flying from the stacks and the American flag flying proudly off the stern. Folded: 7-1/8" x 3-1/4" <br/><br/>"The Tampa Peace Creek and St. Johns River Railroad was incorporated in 1879 and on June 27 1881 the name was changed to the Jacksonville Tampa and Key West Railway. The Palatka and Indian River Railroad was incorporated in 1881 to run from Palatka south past Sanford. The JT&KW bought it in 1887. Eventually the JT&KW main line stretched from Jacksonville to the St. Johns River port of Sanford where the separately-owned South Florida Railroad continued to Tampa. The full line opened on February 20 1886. The Atlantic Coast St. Johns and Indian River Railroad was organized in 1883 to build a connection from the JT&KW's branch to Enterprise another St. Johns River port southeast to Titusville on the Indian River. The JT&KW acquired the line in 1886. The Jupiter and Lake Worth Railway opened in 1889 as a short connection between the JT&KW's Indian River Steamboat Company at Jupiter and the north end of Lake Worth where steamers continued south. The line was abandoned by 1896 after the completion of the parallel Florida East Coast Railway. In 1893 the JT&KW went bankrupt." Wiki. First French edition of Sarmiento's most famous book considered one of the most important works of Argentine literature and one of the most influential Spanish-language works of the nineteenth century. Written during a period of exile the work traces the life of a violent Argentine gaucho named Facundo using his biography as the basis for an analysis and critique of Argentine culture which is characterized by a dichotomy between civilizing and barbaric influences. Sarmiento's views had a profound effect on discussion about the region's potential for progress and modernization. Elizabeth Fox Tuckett 1837-1872 was the sister of the well-known English alpinist Francis Fox Tuckett 1834-1913 who regularly gathered a party of friends and family to accompany him on climbing expeditions. Elizabeth had a talent for drawing as well as a love of travel and produced four popular light-hearted books of which this was the first chronicling her adventures in the form of humorous sketches. Neate T66. Some creasing to cloth corners rubbed occasional foxing lacking rear free endpaper; overall about very good. Inscribed in light pencil on the front free endpaper "With heartfelt good wishes for the/New Year E.F. Tuckett iIllegible place name Dec. 30 1869." From the library of Professor George M Foster. Sabin:42852; Hill page 186 1st edition.<br /><br />G F Lyon was an English traveler born in Chichester England in 1795; died at sea in October 1832. He entered the British naval service in 1809 was present at the attack on Algiers by Lord Exmouth in 1816 and in 1818 was commissioned to accompany Joseph Ritchie on his tour of exploration into central Africa. Ritchie died in Fezzan and Lyon returned to England after encountering many dangers and privations which he described in his Narrative of Travels in Northern Africa London 1821. In 1821 in command of the Hecla he accompanied Captain William E. Parry on his arctic expedition publishing on his return The Private Journal of Captain G. F. Lyon 1824. In 1824 he sailed in command of the Griper' with the mission of exploring Melville peninsula and following its western shore as far as Turn-again he found after three months' searching a passage through the group of islets called Southampton island but was unable to enter Repulse bay through Sir Thomas Rowe's Welcome. On 13 September a violent tempest compelled him to return to England. The story of the voyage was told in A Brief Narrative of an Unsuccessful Attempt 1825. He subsequently passed several years in Mexico and died on his return from a second visit to America. His remaining works are The SketchBook of Captain G. F. Lyon during Eighteen Months' Residence in Mexico No. 1 London 1827 and Journal of a Residence and Tour in Mexico in 1828 London 1828.<br /><br />George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in. Complete but well worn; spine slant corners rubbed through small losses of cloth at head and foot of spine moderate foxing and soiling throughout. A good reference/reading copy. Hall who signed on to the New Bedford whale-ship Condor at the age of 15 suffered so much abuse on board that he and a companion deserted on the coast of Siberia. They spent the winter of 1858-59 at a Russian penal settlement and were rescued the following summer by another New Bedford whaler and taken to Honolulu before returning to New England. "In 1861 Hall published Artic Rovings in an attempt to expoose the abuses of crewmen in the whaling industry. His father making use of letters sent home by his son subsequently brought a lawsuit against Whiteside Captain of the Condor accusing him of abandoning young Hall on the shores of Okhotsk. 1893D108611893. Hardcover. Fine. Dated 1893 sketchbook album in oblong 12mo 120 x 170mm manuscript in pencil with drawings and notes; 40 cream sheets lightly aged at edges 2 sheets are blank. The sketches are generally of building façades captured from a distance but also with some extreme close-ups of sculptural details or decoration on the monuments from gothic towers to ornate door hinges. Some sketches are accompanied with notes by the artist and most are captioned with the site or dated with the month and year being 93. The formatting of the date and spelling throughout suggest this album belonged to an American traveler who visited several sites in Western Europe during the spring of 1893. The drawings are accomplished works of art done by a skillful hand perhaps a novice architect others are barely sketched perhaps unfinished but displaying an interesting narrative which weaves moments of voyage through Martigny St. Maurice and Lausanne in Switzerland; Heidelberg Castle Mainz Cathedral Mayence and Cologne Germany; Utrecht and Holland; and cathedrals at Soissons and Reims in France. Original canvas covers with elastic strap somewhat loose back cover splitting otherwise sound and in very good condition. Inside there is a label of the Carlo Cogiola store in Milan. A great little item full of classic yet original views of historical churches and building parts. <br/><br/> hardcover books

The explorations of these areas as recorded by Louis de Carne 1843-1871 son of the politician and academician Louis-Marie de Carne count of Carne-Marcein 1804-1876 was a French explorer. Appointed by his uncle the Governor General of Cochinchina Pierre-Paul de La Grandiere Louis de Carne participated as an attaché at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the French Mekong expedition from 1866 to 1868 under the command of Ernest Doudart de Lagree an expedition of which he was the youngest member. The only civilian in the mission and directly responsible to the governor he was often in conflict with the other members of the expedition because of his special position. He was tasked with the descriptive part of the trip and more particularly for commercial information. Seriously ill on his return he could not finish writing his travel notes. After his death it was his father who took charge of the preface and the publication of the book in 1872. This work was immediately translated and published in English." A good reference copy. The author was the son of Sir John Barrow who traveled and worked in China and South Africa and served in the British Admiralty where he was a great promoter of Arctic voyages of exploration and discovery. The younger man followed in his father's footsteps as a traveler and writer producing popular and well-received works on his travels in Ireland Iceland Northern Europe and Austria Lombardy and Bavaria. In this letter a salesman has booked travel for a favored client: "I have sent for you by the steam boat CHAMPION which leaves here this afternoon for New Haven marked as you directed by Springfield railroad with three kegs of printing ink." An interesting memento from the days when steamships were owned by the wealthy railroads who attempted to monopolize travel and trade. In this case the steamboat Champion actually the New Champion 1846 - 1851 would leave the Port of New York and set sail up the Long Island Sound eventually entering the Connecticut River bound for New Haven. The passenger could choose to sail as far up as Springfield Massachusetts or transfer for the much faster train at New Haven all owned by Hartford & New Haven Railroads.
