Le livre est Enrichie de figures et de cartes. Une centaine de planches dépliantes hors-texte, cartes et plans, figures, tableaux. Les livres mesurent 13x20 cm et pèsent 65 kg (c) pour 400 à 600 pages par volumes (notes comprises). Reliure d'époque, dos lisse cloisonné, tranche rouge. Les livres sont en très bon état, quelques trous de vers possible surtout dans la marge, taches rousseurs et mouillures possibles sans grosse conséquence, une trentaine de coiffes supérieures abîmés ou manquantes. Une déchirure sans manque sur la gravure de babylone. Bel ensemble.

Contemporary full calf with giltstamped spine and spine-title. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. The first French edition to include a history of the English pirates, in a rare two-volume set published simultaneously with the more common four-volume edition. Considered "the prototype of an entire literature of books of adventures" (Church), Exquemelin's account of the customs and practices of the pirates includes a thorough description of the Caribbean. It was first published in Dutch in Amsterdam in 1678, by Thomas de Frontigniers, and saw Spanish, English and French translations as early as in the 17th century. A ship's surgeon in the service of privateers, the chemist Exquemelin (ca. 1645-1707) not only witnessed but also himself took part in several notorious pirate expeditions, such as that of the English buccaneer Henry Morgan ("John" in the book), including his raid on Maracaibo in 1669, and his 1670 attack on Panama. The second part of the second volume, a French version of an account of English pirates "by Captain Charles Johnson", had first appeared some twenty years earlier. It is a primary source of information on the piratesses Mary Read and Anne Bonny, and is believed by some to have been authored by Daniel Defoe. - Text complete in 2 volumes; lacks the 4 folding maps and plans. From the library of the marquis d'Héricourt, probably Bénigne Jerôme du Trousset d'Héricourt (1691-1779), with his bookplate to the front pastedown of the first volume. Occasional browning; vol. Second edition of Manuel Godinho's account of his return trip from India to Portugal in 1664 by a new route, particularly important for its observations on India and the Middle East. "A very rare and valuable book of early travel in and near India, of which Brunet remarks that it is so rare as to have been wanting in the best collections of Voyages and Travels sold during many years past" (Quaritch, Bibliotheca Hispana, 210). First published in 1665, this classic of Portuguese travel literature contains valuable descriptions of India, Persia, and the adjacent Turkish Dominions, Arabia Felix, Arabia Deserta, etc. Godinho (1632-1712) had the spirit of an adventurer rather than a priest, and left the Order on his return to Portugal in 1663. He candidly admits the decline of Portuguese power in India, and the rise of the English and Dutch, especially the former. "His entertaining account of his rush to Europe contains observations of the customs of the Hindus and Muslims, as well as descriptions of the places visited" (Howgego). One of the earliest and most interesting Jesuit accounts of India, dating from the very end of Portuguese domination of the country, written shortly before Bombay was ceded once and for all to the English in accordance with the Anglo-Portuguese peace treaty of 1661. - Without the series title "Coleccão de obras reimpressas de la Sociedad Propagadora". Very rare separately published editions of two articles, accompanying the first and second sheet of an equally rare hydrographic chart published in 1843 and 1846 by the Dutch cartographer and hydrographer Pieter baron Melvill van Carnbée (1816-1856). The chart was published in three sheets showing the waters between Sumatra and Borneo, the first two sheets, discussed here, cover the waters around the Riau Islands, the Lingga Islands and Singapore and the South China Sea. - The texts open with a brief introduction, a cartobibliography (printed and manuscript maps) and a general bibliography. The main texts note and comment on the coordinates of different places given by various sources, and include many of the small islands, cliffs and shoals in these waters. The first article ends with a table giving different spellings of geographical names in English/Dutch and Malay. - The articles were originally published in "Verhandelingen en berigten betrekkelijk het zeewezen en de zeevaartkunde". - With library stamps of the Royal Danish maritime library ("Marinens Bibliotek"). First edition of "The First Crossing of Greenland" (as the book was titled in English), signed and inscribed to the writer Grete Gulbransson, second wife of the Norwegian artist Olaf Gulbransson: "Fil Grete fra Fridtjof / Lysaker 1 april 1912 / Ungdens drömmer, mange örner, / söker ut mot blae topper [...]" ("Dreams of youth, eagles plenty, briskly they fly upwards into blue heights where the thin morning mist lifts its veil: day has come! Alas, where may they have gone?"). - Binding slightly bumped and rubbed, with Gulbransson's bookplate to pastedown.
