Relating to Volume I, Hill 75: 'Dampier was the best known and probably the most intelligent of the famous group of buccaneers that tormented the Spaniard in the South Seas from 1680 to 1720. his industry in taking notes of all he saw was equaled by his pains in preserving them from destruction. His first voyage took him from Virginia to Spanish America and across the Pacific to the East Indies. He traveled extensively in the orient on several voyages which lasted from 1683 to 1691. It was on one of these trips that the first landing was made by the English on Australian shores'. Dampier, an English buccaneer and explorer and one of the more colorful characters sailing in the 17th and 18th centuries, published his various experiences sporadically. He was the first English navigator to assemble a natural history collection. His first book appeared in 1697 followed by another in 1699, and a third in 1703, each volume issued separately and independent of the others. A folding map in volume I is a double hemisphere map of the globe. This set contains the material written by Dampier himself.

Boraba de Moraes 437 (referring to this second edition of 1817): 'a classic work on the North of Brazil. . . greatly esteemed by all. . . In the appendix he transcribes two monographs by Arruda Camara, rare today, which appeared in Rio in 1810'. This appendix is on plants found in Brazil and their uses. The work includes chapters on the native peoples, planters, animals, agriculture, society, festivals, slavery, etc, based on the authors extensive travels. The maps are of the port of Pernambuco and of northern Brazil where the author travelled. A very attractive set.

Margaret Mee (1909-88) traveled to the Amazon area 15 times over a 32 year period, by canoe, on foot and often alone. Her paintings and sketches "could stand without shame in the high company of such masters as Georg Dionysius Ehret and Redoute" (Wilfred Blunt). Mee was a passionate conservationist and devoted her life to recording the diversity and beauty of the Amazon. She was one of the first to protest the destruction still taking place there. Sitwell in Great Flower Books describes her work as: 'exceptional and quite in the tradition of the great eighteenth-century books '. 'Mee's work is of an unusually high order of excellence and in the best tradition of flower painting' [Taylor, director of Royal Botanic Garden of Kew]. 'Mee was a talented botanical painter and intrepid traveller. . .an exceptional personality' [Oak Spring Flora]. One of the plants illustrated was discovered by Mee herself.

While this vernacular travel book offers a vibrant portrait both historical and typographic of local European theatre in the mid-19th century it was also clearly collected and assembled by a lover of the stage dare we say an early theatre geek who to this cataloguer at least seems a proto-member of what we would now call fan culture. A rare early and striking physical manifestation of cultural enthusiasm at the birth of the modern era. hardcover books

8vo. 88 pp. With a folding table "Profit and loss on sugars imported from Begal" after p. 10. Disbound with remains of a calf spine. First edition. - "It is contended, in these letters, that the India company are already in possession of exclusive privileges which many deem injurious to the public, and that it would be gross impolicy to invest them with the power of converting the sugar trade into a monopoly. An equalization of duties is deemed both unnecessary and impolitic; unneccessary, because the East India company can bring sugars to market with a profit subject to the present high duties, as long as it can be for the general interest of the nation, that they should so do; and impolitic, because the East India company would totally ruin the West India islands if they can import sugars to any extet for which a demand can be found" (The Analytical Review 15 [1793], p. 523). - Title a little spotty; slight dampstain in the upper margin. Contemporary tanned sheepskin, sewn on 6 cords, gold-tooled spine with a label in the 2nd of 7 compartments. First and only edition in the original German of an account of the Dänisch-Hallesche mission on the Carnatic coast in southeast India, from the beginning in 1705 to 1736. The Dänisch-Hallesche mission was the first Protestant mission and many resulting reports were published in the magazine Hallesche Berichte. Niekamp digested its first 44 chapters and organized them in two main parts: the first dealing with geography, inhabitants, languages etc. and the second treating the mission itself in chronological order; this if followed by a comprehensive index. The work contains a preface by Gotthilf August Francke, the son of the August Hermann Francke, who was one of the driving forces in the creation of the mission. - A Latin translation of the second part on the mission was published in 1747 and a complete French translation in 1755. A continuation was published by Michael Meier in 1771, covering the period 1736-1767. - The turn-ins caused some offsetting through the endpapers to the margins of the first and last few leaves, otherwise a very good copy, with only some occasional spots. 4to. (12), 150, (10) pp. With 12 (instead of 14) engraved plates, also wanting the portrait frontispiece and the engraved title-page. Later vellum using contemporary material with handwritten title to spine. First edition. An account of an East Indian and Middle Eastern journey made during the years of 1641-50. The German soldier Behr (d. 1692) departed from Leipzig, enlisted with the Dutch East Indian Company (VOC) and travelled to East India in 1644. From Batavia he sailed onwards to Java and Goa, and he served with the fleet of Johan Maetsuycker on the Malabar coast. He spent four years to Ceylon before visiting Persia and returning to the Netherlands. His account was published 18 years after his return, and "many sections of his journal resemble suspiciously closely the narratives of Johann Jacob Merklein and Johann Jacob Saar" (Howgego). The fine illustrations include views of Goa, St. Helena, and Kamron (Bandar Abbas), a cinnamon tree and flying fish. The appendix reprints the author's passport issued by Captain Jan van der Laen, as well as an alphabetical index. - Somewhat browned throughout due to paper. Covers slightly warped. Wants a total of four engravings, including the title (letterpress title-page is present). From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel (1939-2015) with his handwritten and stamped ownership, dated 1981, to the pastedown. VD 17, 3:307812K. Howgego I, 102, B59. Not in Wilson.
