It is one of the few books of the time which describes journeys across Rio Grande do Sul. The author was a guest of Bompland. . .He also visited the German colony of Sao Leopoldo in Port Alegre and the missions. The work is not easy to find today'. The author traveled through Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Rio do Sol, extensively around the Buenos Aires area. The frontis is view of Buenos Aires from the harbour, the other plates include a gaucho in process of roping a steer, costume plates. The often lacking errata leaf is present. A preliminary leaf has a printing of the author's signature.

A picture of this book is avai An important early travel narrative on Brazil with much on mining, agriculture, the cities, culture, customs, etc based on the author's extensive travels. The author later wrote several famous mineralogy books. Borba de Moraes 541: 'The first de visu account of the gold and diamond mines in Brazil. . . the view of the Jaragua mining camp is the first landscape document which exists of the interior of Sao Paulo'. The plates include a view of washing for diamonds at Mandanga, gold washing at Jaragua, view of topaz mine at Capon, machinery, River Jigitonbonha, plates of minerals, diamonds, topaz, tourmaline, shells, etc., being some of the earliest views of the interior of Brazil. Sabin 46991: 'The work of Mr. Mawe contains the first authentic information which the jealousy of the Portuguese Government ever allowed a foreigner to acquire respecting the universal treasures of the Brazils'. Griffin 3858: 'Widely translated in several European languages, Mawe's was the first description by a foreigner of the mining regions of Brazil'. The book also contains an early description of Sao Paulo.

The author seems also to have provided the many excellent illustrations, from his drawings, sketches, paintings, including panoramas of Kashmir Valley from Soleiman's Seat to Nichat Bach and of Le, From the Palace to the Valley of the Indus.. An interesting and insightful account including much on the peoples, views, customs, etc.

The embossed faces on the front board are missing and it looks as though someone has tried to drawn in one of the faces. Previous owner's brief inscription on the front free endpaper. Leaves with 48 striking hand-tinted albumen prints 19 cm x 25 cm. Each leaf has two images one on each side. Tissue guards in between. Very occasional light foxing to the images. Original leather covers string tied; grey card leaves photos mounted with black corners. Moderate wear to covers string ties mostly perished. Earlier leaves captioned contents clean images crisp. An extensive photo album kept by adventurous world travelers with images ranging from standard destinations like Niagara Falls to camel rides in the Sahara Desert. Highlights include "Badger Hunting in Normandy" scenes from Cairo views of Atlantic City and an extensive series of views in the Caribbean. This group of 136 photographs covers Morro Castle in Puerto Rico; St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands with scenes of streets and locals in small boats; Martinique and Barbados; Trinidad and Curacao; Colon in Panama in the Canal Zone with scenes of the streets and locks; posh resort life in Kingston Jamaica; and finally Cuba. Images of Cuba include street views of Havana and its important buildings including the Senate the "National Casino" insane asylum the treasury the presidential palace the Inglaterra Hotel and the country club. Additionally scenes in La Playa outside Havana at the beach; the town of Hershey and its plant built by chocolate magnate Milton Hershey; and views of Mariel and Batamano depicting life in the more rural countryside. Later images show scenes touring Europe as well as a series of photos taken in Rio de Janeiro. Though a bit scattered in content the album is an interesting and extensive document of wealthy travel over the course of several years and several continents. unknown books

Roulette d'encadrement aux étoiles sur les plats. Petite zone grattée sur le plat inférieur du premier tome, quelques pâles rousseurs, sinon, très bel exemplaire. Sans conteste l'ouvrage le plus important de l'auteur, l'oeuvre est un traité des politiques économiques des colonies européennes (Portugal, France, Espagne, Hollande, Angleterre) en Amérique, en Afrique et en Asie, d'un point de vue historique, théorique et pratique. De ce fait, discutant des politiques commerciales dans les colonies, Pradt établit également une histoire de l'esclavage et des révolutions. On notera un chapitre très important qui clot le livre intitulé : Que deviendront les Etats-unis. Cette étude est établie d'après des statistiques et s'avère prémonitoire. Si l'auteur reconnaît l'importance de l'ouvrage de Raynal sur les colonies, il avoue également que la vision de ce dernier sur les colonies est en 1817 totalement surannée, en raison des événements qui se sont passés depuis. Les trois derniers mois de l'Amérique méridionale et du Brésil reviennent sur les événements chaotiques qui se succèdèrent à cette époque au Brésil et par les guerres menées par le Brésil, et à cet égard, de la nécessité d'un congrès international sur les colonies. La pensée de Pradt est une pensée positive. En discutant des événements qui ont fondé les colonies et de la manière dont elles ont été administrées, il parvient à expliquer par les causes les effets, et à expliquer ainsi la situation présente et à venir. Ensemble épidermé. Manques aux mors en coiffe de tête ; et de queue pour le mors supérieur. Un coin émoussé. Importante relation pour la connaisance occidentale de l'Egypte. Vansleb, philologue et théologien allemand, se mit au service de Colbert pour un voyage projeté en Ethiopie, mais il n'alla jamais plus loin que l'Egypte, où il passa 20 mois à observer et collecter des informations, multipliant les excursions et voyages. Vansleb ne revient jamais sur les descriptions qui ont déjà été faites par d'autres (les pyramides), conscient de livrer à ses lecteurs des informations entièrement neuves. Si ce n'est pas la première relation sur l'Egypte, c'est la première d'un homme résidant longtemps dans le pays ; c'est de toutes façons une des premières, mais la toute première de cette façon. L'auteur s'était déjà rendu une première fois en Egypte, il en avait tiré une narration en Italien, mais il ne possédait pas cette connaissance de l'arabe qui permet le contact avec la population, et il n'était pas demeuré dans le pays.
