19152566Various locations in Mexico 1915. About good. 196 photographs on forty-nine leaves. Sixteen photographs loose on remnant leaves. Oblong octavo. Covers lacking. Several leaves loose some chipped. Images mostly clean some lightly faded. An interesting vernacular photograph album of what appear to be vacation photographs taken at the turn of the century. The initial images depict a family at a farm several of them scenes of working life including digging ditches and men on horseback; further on in the album there are more scenes of locals in the countryside documenting daily life. There are also numerous scenes in Mexico City and beyond including bull fights the cathedral street scenes and some images of railway lines. There are a few images of white folks on a beach followed by several photographs of soldiers both American and Mexican. Though a bit battered the album provides a glimpse into rural life in Mexico in the early 20th century and provides insight as to what tourists were photographing. unknown
19302033Various places 1930. Very good. Ninety-nine photographs on fifty leaves various sizes but many approximately 7 x 6 inches. Oblong octavo. Original brown covers typed paper label; black paper leaves. Covers a bit worn corners heavily so. Minor soiling to contents a few photos with some light silver mirroring. Images each with typed captions in the negative. A handsome vernacular vacation album with images taken by a skilled photographer with a keen eye for composition and lighting. Each image has a typed caption printed in the negative and most photos are one per page and quite large. The cover label indicates trips to Chicago Virginia Beach New Orleans Houston San Antonio Tucson and Phoenix over the course of three years. The album opens with several handsome panoramic shots of the Chicago skyline and Grant Park before moving on to scenes of sand dunes at Virginia Beach. The remaining forty leaves however show images of New Orleans and the Southwest all captured in artistic detail. Among the more interesting scenes are "Civil War Tenements - Church Street - New Orleans"; "At Twilight the Old Mission Concepcion San Antonio - Texas"; "U.S. Veterans Hospital - Tucson". There are many sweeping scenes of desert scenery and cactus some well-composed tourist shots in San Antonio at the zoo and Brackenridge Park and a series of three images of the Rodeo Parade in Tucson in 1930 showing the cowboys cowgirls and "Indians" marching in the parade.

There are also street scenes in each city documenting the growing urban landscape and its buildings. One such shows the Alamo and is captioned "The famous Alamo and the Medical Arts Building. The old and the new - San Antonio Texas." Though the photographer is unidentified he has taken a self-portrait in Audubon Park in New Orleans which shows a middle-aged man in spectacles wearing a fedora and a plaid suit. An unusually nice vernacular photo album comprised of sharp and artistic photographs documenting scenes of tourism and travel in the late 1920s. unknown
1672ICFELAQ59QY4Holland 1672. Later blue/grey paper wrappers. 4to. With 2 thin rules on the title-page. Set in roman types with incidental italic. First and only edition of a 1672 political pamphlet in the form of a spin-off from Henry Neville's very popular 1668 story of a voyage to the imaginary utopian/dystopian Isle of Pines. The present story is written as a conversation between three militia men on watch discussing the turbulent politics of 1672. One tells of his fictitious voyage and several years residence on a fictitious utopian island called Mallanbruino in the South Pacific. He says it is one degree south of the Isle of Pines. On Mallanbruino the industrious people were oppressed by an emperor but rose up and defeated him with help from a prince who also replaced the evil regents. They note the remarkable similarities to events in the Dutch Republic. The island then set up a new and fairer democratic representative political system bringing peace and happiness to the island. The three men conclude that the Dutch Republic should introduce such a system. Some spots and a small restoration to the extremities of the title-page otherwise in good condition. A fascinating but little-known pamphlet building political propaganda around a story related to the popular imaginary voyage to the Isle of Pines.l Knuttel 10600; M. Reinders Printed pandemonium pp. 195-199; STCN 863300111; not in Gove Imaginary voyages; Van Doorninck Vermomde en naamlooze schrijvers; Ford Isle of Pines 1668 1920; Scheckter Isle of Pines 1668 2011. unknown
