184291013London: Ordered by the House of Commons to be printed 1842. 1st ed. Hardcover. Good because of fragile repaired map. 2 vols. 4 folding maps 3 in Part I and one in Part II xxvi 744 637p. Contemporary 1/2 leather with marbled boards. Covers intact but rather heavily scuffed and rubbed. Bookplates removed on both front pastedowns. Contents generally sound and clean although the large folding map of the coast of West Africa in Part Volume II is fragile. That map had split apart along many of the original folds and elsewhere. While it had been carefully put back together it needs careful handling when folding or unfolding to keep nthe map intact. These volumes contain a wealth of material about British trade and administrative activities in Gambia Sierra Leone and Gold Coast the three areas of particular British interest and control in West Africa at that time -- Lagos and other pieces of what is now modern Nigeria were still outside British influence and control in 1842 and Benin hadn't yet been grabbed by Germany before passing to Great Britain after World War I. These volumes also contain quite a bit of information about British efforts to suppress and end the slave trade. Ordered, by the House of Commons, to be printed hardcover

181967124London: printed for Henry Colburn Conduit Street 1819. 2 volumes 8vo pp. xv 1 375 1; 4 396; folding map 7 hand-colored aquatints; original drab paper-covered boards printed paper labels on spines; light wear; very good and sound. First published in 1816 with 2 fewer aquatints and with the title Narrative of a Ten Years' Residence at Tripoli in Africa. Written by the sister-in-law of Richard Tully British Consul at Tripoli between 1783 and 1793. The female members of Tully's family were on intimate terms with the Bashaw's family. Thus the narrative contains a unique insight into the life of the Seraglio. The letters were published from the originals in the possession of the family of the late Richard Tully comprising authentic memoirs and anecdotes of the reigning Bashaw his family and other persons of distinction. Also included are accounts of the domestic matters of the Moors Arabs and Turks. One of the most important records of Tripolitan life during the 18th century. "These letters will prove no less important to the political inquirer than amusing to the public at large; laying open much that will materially assist the comprehensive views of the stateman blended with all the rich entertainment that so greatly distinguished the correspondence of Lady Mary Wortley Montague" Preface. Later half calf spine in six compartments with raised banding gilt lettering and motifs marbled boards new endpapers. Short detachment of tissue guard and title page to base. Very occasional spotting. A lovely volume.

Richard Tully was the British Consul at Tripoli from 1783 to 1793 and according to the preface these letters were written by his sister; and attributed to his sister-in-law in the second and third editions. The author's identity has always been a mystery: there is no record of a sister nor of another female family member residing in Tripoli apart from Mr Tully's wife and two daughters. The final entry is dated April 30 1795 Gibraltar. It reads: "Since you must have had my letters with the journal of Tripoli". Louisa Maria Tully daughter of Richard Tully married Alexander Simpson on 19 March 1795 in Gibraltar. Her sister Anne married Gaspar Gomez de la Serna Perez de Beas having four children before his death in 1808 residing in Minorca. Both daughters were fluent in Arabic both were intimate with the court of Tripoli regarded as daughters of the Court. Mrs Tully may be discounted as the author as she is referred to in the third person. The first person authors are variably "we" or "I". I suggest that these letters were written by the Tully sisters.

Byron admitted his plagiarism of this work "by the way much of the description of the furniture in Canto Third of Don Juan is Taken from Tully's Tripoli pray note this.
