The expedition passed through the Belgian Congo including a grueling five-month passage through the Ituri rain forest the darkness of which inspired this book's title. Eventually they reached Emin persuaded him to leave and made their way to the eastern cost. In Darkest Africa was published soon after the conclusion of the expedition initially to great acclaim. But as more information emerged from other participants detailing high levels of death and brutality in the expedition Stanley 's reputation suffered considerably. HOWGEGO IV S60. Preliminary text leaf: "Visit of British Educationists to Southern Africa December 28 1954––January 12 1955." 48 black-and-white photographic prints mounted back-to-back; interleaved with text leaves all mounted on guards. Light-brown cloth gilt-lettered on front cover. Provenance: G. H. G. Harris a member of the tour gilt initials on front cover pencil signature on title typed letter from the Harry Oppenheimer 27 June 1955 mounted on front pastedown. The letter on the pastedown from Harry Oppenheimer Deputy Chairman presents the volume to Mr. Harris: "After your visit to Southern Africa. it occurred to us that you might care to have some photographs to remind you of the places and people you encountered here. We have accordingly had a selection of photographs assembled in the form of an album. It is as you are aware our hope that as a result of your visit more young men from the British Isles may be interested in making their careers with us."

The opening text describes the trip made during December 1954 and January 1955 on which "twenty educationists–University Professors Careers Masters and Headmasters from the United Kingdom–visited South Africa and the Rhodesias as guests of Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Limited."

In South Africa they visited the gold mine of South African Land and Exploration Company Ltd.; the uranium and sulphuric acid plants of Daggafontein Mines Ltd.; the Orange Free State Goldfields Welkon and Allanridge; Premier diamond mine at Cullinan near Pretoria; the diamond mines at Kimberley; and the Cornelia Colliery near Vereeniging. They went to Victoria Falls and in the Rhodesias they visited the copper mines of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd and Rhokana Corporation; the research labs of Rhoanglo Mine Services Ltd at Kitwe; and the mining towns of Chingola and Nkana.

The names of the twenty members of the party are listed on the preliminary text leaf. The photos start at the company's headquarters in Johannesburg and then follow the course of the trip. A number show The Ernest Oppenheimer Hospital at Welkom and others show the De Beers facilities including dogs trained to attack intruders. Each photo faces a printed caption detailing the subject in the image.

The Anglo American Corporation of South Africa was founded in 1917 by Ernest Oppenheimer with financial backing from the American bank J.P. Morgan & Co. The AAC became the majority stakeholder in De Beers in 1926. In the late 1940s and 50s the AAC focused on the development of the Free State goldfields and the Vaal Reefs mine. Ernest Oppenheimer died in 1957 and the company continued under his son Harry the author of the letter to Mr. Harris that is found on the pastedown of this album. The company has at least one connection to the literary world: they loaned a diamond to artist Richard Chopping to use as a model for the paintings he made for Ian Fleming's James Bond series’ dust jackets.

Rare: given the presentation of this volume it is likely that twenty albums were compiled and distributed to the educationists. We trace no copies in WorldCat/OCLC nor any at auction. A very scarce piece of corporate promotion. unknown

Rebacked in the 19th century leather retaining the original spine with raised bands and gilt decorative stamping and lettering to spine. Translated from the original Portuguese manuscripts by Jackim le Grande. First edition.

Born in Lisbon he entered the Order of Jesus at the age of sixteen. In 1621 he was ordered as a missionary to India and in 1622 he arrived at Goa. With the intention of proceeding to Abyssinia whose Negus emperor Segued had been converted to Roman Catholicism by Pedro Páez he left India in 1624. He disembarked on the coast of Mombasa and attempted to reach his destination through the Galla country but was forced to return. In 1625 he set out again accompanied by Mendez the patriarch of Ethiopia and eight missionaries. The party landed on the coast of the Red Sea and Lobo settled in Abyssinia as superintendent of the missions in Tigre. He remained there until death deprived the Catholics of their protector the emperor Segued. Forced by persecution to leave the kingdom in 1634 Lobo and his companions fell into the hands of the Turks at Massawa who sent him to India to procure a ransom for his imprisoned fellow-missionaries. In this he was successful but could not induce the Portuguese viceroy to send an armament against Abyssinia. Intent upon accomplishing this cherished project he embarked for Portugal and after he had been shipwrecked on the coast of Natal and captured by pirates arrived at Lisbon. Neither at this city however nor at Madrid and Rome was any countenance given to Lobo's plan. He accordingly returned to India in 1640 and was elected rector and afterwards provincial of the Jesuits at Goa. After some years he returned to his native city and died there January 29 1678.

Lobo wrote an account of his travels in Portuguese which appears never to have been printed but is deposited in the monastery of St. Roque Lisbon. Balthazar Telles made large use of the information therein in his Historia geral da Ethiopia a Alta Coimbra 1660 often erroneously attributed to Lobo see Machado's Bibliotheca Lusitana. Lobo's own narrative was translated from a manuscript copy into French in 1728 by the Abbe Joachim le Grand under the title of Voyage historique d'Abissinie. In 1669 a translation by Sir Peter Wyche of several passages from a manuscript account of Lobo's travels was published by the Royal Society translated in Melchisédech ThévenotRelation des voyages in 1673. An English abridgment of Le Grand's edition by Dr. Johnson was published in 1735 reprinted 1789. In a Mémoire justificatif en réhabilitation des pères. Pierre Paëz et Jérôme Lobo Dr. C. T. Beke maintains against Bruce the accuracy of Lobo's statements as to the source of the Abai branch of the Nile. See A. de Backer Bibliothèque de la Compagnie de Jésus edited by C. An excellent set of this rare work. RARE FIRST EDITION. An important and rare work in which the author covers the War and subsequent events including Cetshwayo 's visit to England and his return to a broken Zululand. Colenso was a great admirer of Cetshwayo.
Mendelssohn's South African Bibliography Vol.1 page 356 – 357: states that the Zulu war may be divided into three periods the first of which is that treated of in " The History of the Zulu War" while this work covers the second and third periods. The author argues that " had the restoration of Cetywayo been carried out in the kind and honest spirit in which it was conceived long ere this the misery of Zululand would have been over." It is alleged that a certain portion of the inhabitants of Natal assisted by the Government officials had provoked the constant succession of wars and disputes between the British the Boers and the natives. Sir Bartle Frere Mr. Shepstone and others are accused of having worked up an agitation which transformed a peaceful situation with the Zulus into a position which ostensibly demanded an army of defence as an urgent necessity ; and this latter being at last conceded by the home Government no time was lost in changing the attitude of defence into one of offence which resulted in " one of the most needless and disastrous campaigns which ever disgraced our arms."
In the second volume there is an interesting account of the visit of Cetywayo to England and of his interviews with members of the Royal family and Lord Kimberley. The King spoke earnestly to the Colonial Minister on the subject of John Dunn's treachery and ingratitude and asked that he should not be allowed to settle in the country ; he however agreed to the terms set forth under which he was allowed to return to his kingdom. The work gives a clear account of the unhappy state of Zululand after the King's return until his death " again a prisoner " under the protection of the British Resident. The author like her father and sister was a strong champion of Cetywayo and was greatly grieved and indignant at the intrigues which are stated to have led to the ruin and death of the Zulu king who she asserts " stands out amidst all the chaos of South African blunders and wrongdoings . as grand a figure as any in modern history. His faith in our England wrought his downfall and his death. William Ridgway hardcover

Denham 1786-1828 made extensive and important explorations in Africa. When he accompanied Bornuese troops in an expedition against the Fellatah they were put to utter rout and only Denham escaped with his life "after encountering dangers and deprivations his narrative of which reads like a frenzied dream. The work which went through several editions has numerous illustrations from sketches by the author together with an Appendix of Natural History and other notes" DNB. 186324075London: Tinsley Brothers 1863. Hardcover. Very good. Two volumes in the rarest binding state without Burton’s name or FRGS on the spines but with a “second edition†slug on the title pages. This state was apparently unknown to Penzer and was probably the result of an attempt to boost sales by the publisher as the text is unchanged. Plate of Julu house is the frontispiece to Volume I and the map now detached and laid in is in Volume II. Both volumes lightly bumped/rubbed but clean and sound. Small bookplate of F.H. Spencer on each front pastedown along with a small bookseller stamp and evidence of a few markings removed. Much to his dismay Burton’s first consular posting landed him on a small desolate island off the coast of West Africa. He took every opportunity to leave the place exploring various parts of the mainland and making observations on cultural and traditions health and sanitary conditions and slavery among other things. The account of his journeys into Sierra Leone and Nigeria to investigate stories of gold and gold mining is credited with drawing public attention to mining prospects in the region. "Barrow accompanied Lord Macartney's mission to the court of China in 1792 as his private secretary and the present account.is one of the best illustrated English travels on China. The eight plates are from drawings by William Alexander who also accompanied the embassy and later published his own work. The strict exclusion of Europeans by the Chinese emperors had left China very much terra incognita to the western world well into the nineteenth century. Barrow was an excellent observer and the text contains a number of descriptions and illustrations of Chinese artifacts and novelties. Among these are a plate depicting musical instruments extensive renditions of Chinese melodies in western western notation and a long description with illustration of an abacus" Hill 62. Historian Michael Adas notes that Barrow "interspersed descriptions of his travels and personal experiences with lengthy discussions of varying aspects of Chinese culture. His judgments on the quality of Chinese life and material culture tended to be favorable at the beginning of his residence in China but grew more and more disparaging as time passed." Unlike Jesuit writers who praised the sophistication of Chinese science and culture Barrow argued that a once-great civilization had been on the decline since the fifteenth century providing "an implicit contrast between static past-minded backward China and the continually improving foreward-looking industrializing states of Europe Adas Machines as the Measure of Man pp 179-180.
