Blind stamped border decorations to front and back and a blind stamped lion to center front and back. Book is tight and square except for front cover which is cleanly detached. Spine has diagonal missing piece to top corner and corners are mildly rubbed. Interior clean and sharp except for minor spotting to tissue guarded frontispiece of lion being shot. Appalled at the terrible effects of the slave trade on African life he became a fierce abolitionist. His "Missionary Travels" was first published in London 1857 and in Philadelphia the following year. The edition offered here is the only one issued with color lithograph plates and is rare. Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece and thirteen plates and with a large folding map.Collated complete.After Livingstone's death in 1873 Horace Waller the editor of this work was given Livingstone's final journals by Henry Morton Stanley. These final journals of the pioneering explorer explore his final years of life in Central Africa from 1865 to 1873. In editing these journals Waller presented a sentimental and saintly image of Livingstone. Waller was a close associate of Livingstone and himself published works on Africa.With an 1885 prize inscription to a front blank.This tenth thousandth also includes a description of Livingstone's final moments and death written by his faithful servants Chuma and Susi. In a signed calf prize binding with gilt detailing. Significant rubbing to back strip board perimeters and joints. Small loss of calf to back strip head. Front joint head and tail starting with board somewhat tenderly held. Rear joint starting with board a touch tender. Inscription to a front blank. Internally firmly bound but with folding map of volume II detached and loosely inserted. Significant closed tears to this folding map. Rubbed lightly sunned at spine front hinge cracked through: Good only. <br /> <br /> An account of the Livingstone brothers' exploration of the Zambesi river based heavily on Charles' journals. The expedition was highly expensive resulted in multiple deaths yielded relatively little new geographical or scientific information and David Livingstone's "plans to check the slave trade had come to nothing" ODNB. Livingstone's activism after his journey did result in the creation of the UMCA. <br /> <br /> Despite the 1865 date on the title page this copy is clearly a much later issue from the original publisher as demonstrated by the 1877 publisher's catalogue and the presence of blind- rather than gilt stamping on the front board first edition copies were stamped in gilt.
