Importante prima edizione della raccolta delle opere di Mandelstam, comprendente poesie inedite, pubblicata a New York perché il poeta, morto in un campo di lavoro staliniano, non era più da tempo tra i letterati ammessi e stampati in Urss. Lo sarà quello stesso anno con l'avvio del disgelo kruscioviano (vedi su Nuovi Argomenti, 2013: Seamus Heaney. Su Osip e Nadezda Mandelstam).

Tratta dalla seconda edizione francese del “Voyages du Professeur Pallas, dans Plusieurs Provinces de l'Empire de Russie et dans l'Asie Septentrionale” di Peter Simon Pallas (opera per la prima volta pubblicata in Germania a St. Petersbourg fra il 1771 e il 1776 e in seconda edizione, nonché la prima francese, fra 1788 e il 1793), interamente incisa dal Tardieu. Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, b/n, cm 38,5 x 45 (il foglio). La mappa relativa al Mar Caspio, include le terre fra il Volga e la catena montuosa dell' Oural che fa tradizionalmente da limite geografico e da spartiacque fra l'Europa e l'Asia; sono segnalate le città di Astrakhan, nella Russia meridionale, e Orenbourg, situata al limite orientale della parte europea sul fiume Ural. Pallas, of German origin, was a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and on request of the Russian government explored the lesser-known provinces of the Russian Empire. His travel books opened up Russia to the West and served as a model for 18 th-century for travel literature. Stretti margini, uniforme ingiallimento, buono stato.
