Study of an old male religious figure for Rimsky-Korsakov's most ambitious opera during the last years of his life. It is testament to his mastery of colorful orchestration epic choral scenes and depiction of unusual characters contrasting the disarming honesty of its heroine Fevronia with the amorality of its vagrant anti-hero Grishka.Provenance: Archive Jean ROBIN. Jean Robin was an impressario of the dance administrator and Director of tours of the ballets of the Champs-Elysées from 1945 to 1951 creator and director of the Festival Internationnal de Danse de Paris from 1963 to 1989 artistic director of the theater of the Champs-Elysées from 1954 to 1967 creator and director of the festival "Mai de Versailles" from 1961 to 1977 general secretary of the Orchestra of Paris from 1967 to 1976 director of the theater of the Gaité Lyrique from 1967 to 1973 vice-president of the International Center of the dance . Jean Robin is considered a pioneer for having established an annual event of truly international scope dedicated to dance in all its forms. He collaborated with many artists Cocteau Boris Kochno Sauguet Auric Roland Petit Jean Babilée Maurice Béjart Rudolf Noureev. St Petersburg 1898. 84 pp.</p><p>One of the first edition of the libretto of the opera by the famous Russian composer.</p><p><em>Sadko</em> is an opera by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in seven scenes. The libretto was written by the composer himself on the basis of the Russian <em>byliny</em> about Sadko the gusli-player. <em>Sadko</em> after <em>The Snow Maiden</em> and before <em>The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh</em> is hardly less than the most significant creation of Rimsky-Korsakov. Here the highest harmony of all elements was achieved once again confirming the immutability and vitality of Glinka's precepts. This opera deeply national and original opened a new chapter in the history of Russian music.</p><p>The libretto of the opera-bylina by N. Rimsky-Korsakov <em>Sadko</em> with the full text. From 1880-1888 he was an adjutant to the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich. In the late 1880s - early 1890s he was a naval agent in Franc commanded various ships was a member of the temporary branch of the Kronstadt port in St. Petersburg and an expert in the St. Petersburg District Court. From 1898-1901 he commanded the Imperial yacht Standart. In 1900 he became a Rear Admiral. This photo is probably on one of the preliminary tours for the future Tsar Nicholas II and his brother George to the Far East. In 1890 Nicholas his younger brother George and their cousin Prince George of Greece set out on a world tour. As it was unusual to send so many members of the family abroad together they sent ahead to ensure their safety. In fact the tour was cut short when in April 1891 in the city of tsu Japan Nicholas was attacked by a deranged Japanese police officer. unknown

After Russia's defeat against Japan in 1905 Rimsky-Korsakov decided to create a satirical work which would expose the ineptitude of the disastrous Tsarist regime. He chose Pushkin's 1834 poem The Golden Cockerel as the basis for his libretto and it was ready to pass to the censor in 1907 after a year of work. It was immediately banned by the Palace presumably due to the resemblance between the Tsar and the foolish King Dodon was too close. Rimsky-Korsakov's failing health meant that he never got to see the production of his work dying two days before the 1909 premiere at the Solodovnikov Theatre. This was Dyagilev's doing.
