New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 196 p. Calming the Ferghana Valley: Development and dialogue in the heart of Central Asia (Preventive Action Reports, V. 4). Of all the regions of the former Soviet Union, Central Asia is potentially one of the most explosive and certainly one of the least understood. It is also growing rapidly in importance to U.S. national security, commercial, and foreign policy interests: it has vast oil, gas, gold, and other resources; it has become a source and transit route for narcotics and possible nuclear and other materials; and it is affected by the fierce conflicts in Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Vast in size (larger than Eastern and Western Europe combined), and with a rapidly growing population of over 50 million people, it is marked by the persistence of relatively corrupt and authoritarian governments. This report assesses the potential for conflict in Central Asia through the prism of one of its most volatile areas, the Ferghana Valley. Spanning parts of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, the Ferghana Valley is home to 20 percent of Central Asia's entire population. The region has recently experienced increasing religious and ethnic tensions--the further danger being that instability in the valley could spread more widely throughout Central Asia. The Ferghana Valley project of the Council on Foreign Relations' Center for Preventive Action (CPA) has produced this report as the fourth volume in its series of Preventive Action Reports. Sponsored by The Council on Foreign Relations and The Century Foundation.

The Republic of Mongolia. S¿mmary and conclusion. Svat Soucek s book offers a short and accessible introduction to the history of Inner Asia. The narrative, which begins with the arrival of Islam, charts the rise and fall of the different dynasties right up to the Russian conquest. Dynastic tables and maps augment and elucidate the text. The contemporary focus rests on the seven countries which make up the core of present-day Eurasia, that is Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Sinkiang and Mongolia. Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, renewed interest in these countries has prompted considerable political, cultural, economic and religious debate. While a divergent literature has evolved in consequence, no comprehensive survey of the region has been attempted. Soucek s history promises to fill this gap and to become an indispensable source of information for anyone studying or visiting the region.

As New English Paperback. Pbo. Mint. Large demy 8vo. (21 x 16 cm). In Kurdish. 202 p. "Tirk û Kurd wek du xelkên hêja, wextekî dirêj e li Anatoliyayê bi hev re derbaskirine û mensûbê eynî dînî ne. Belê dîsa jî, xebatên aqademîk yên derheq Tirkiye, nexasim jî yên li Tirkiye çap bûne, heta demeke nêzîk ji ber sebebên tên zanîn, mijara Kurdan mixabin wer maye diqorzî û quncikan de. Ya rast, jibo fahmkirina dîroka Tirkiye û Osmanî, pêwîst e ku Kurd jî mîna parçekî muhîm ê vê dîrokê bêne dîtin. Ev kitêba dest we de, di çarçoveya "Xebatên Derheq Tirkiyeyê" de, li pêsdarên sereke yên Kurdan û li hereketên wan ên neteweperwer yên di sedsala 20an de derketine, ji nêz ve dinere û bi qasî îmkanan, girêdayî çavkaniyên pêsî dimîne, di pêvajoya dîrokî de li peywendiya navbera dewleta Osmanî û Kurdan vedinere. Çawa ku di dîroka Tirkiyê de nedîtina rola Kurdan sasîtiyek be, ew îdîya ku di seranserayî dîrokê de nasnameya Kurdî xwediyê naverokeke neguherî ye jî wer sasîtî ye. Besekî vê kitêbê bi temamî di heqê pêsveçûna nasnameya Kurdî maneya mefhûma Kurdî ya dîrokê pêde dewamî rûberî guherînê maye vedinere, û sebeba muhîmtirîna vê guherînê jî bandûra ku Kurdan ji dewletên lê jiyiyane stendine. Heta demên nêzîk, kitêbên li Turkiyê wesiyane yên derheq derketina neteweperweriya Kurdî de vekolîn kirine, bi pirranî aliyê wan ê îdeolojik li pss e. Ev jî li dijî bêterefiya aqademîk e û dibe sebeb xwendekar rast agahdar nebin. Salên dawî li pey hev derketina çavkaniyên bingehîn û li Tirkî wergerandina hin xebatên zimanê biyanî yên ku li objektîfbûna aqademîk miqate ne, kêfa meriv tîne. Bi vê rêyê xwendekar li Tirkiyê firset û sensê wî çêdibe ku bigihîje kitêbên derheq mijareke wek neteweperweriya Kurd ku ji Tirkiye û Rojhilata Navîn re, hetta ji Ewrûpa re jî mijareke pirr girîng e. Hêvîdar im, vê kitêba dest we de, derheqê têkiliyên navbera dewleta Osmanî û pêsdarên Kurdan alî me bike ku zanînên me yên hindik firehtir bike.".

"The exhibition of artists of Caucasian origin in Turkish art from Avni Lifij to date contains the works of 21 of these famous artists of Caucasian origin. People who had fought for their beautiful country Caucasia for many years and who had had to emigrate to Ottoman land starting from 1860s, had tried to preserve their original culture and traditions, which were also observed with admiration and praised in their work by travellers, soldiers, researchers and writers from many countries who had visited to Caucasians' fatherland hundreds of year ago. In the meantime, Caucasians have fought bravely in World War I and in War of Independence under the leadership of the great founder Ataturk in order to protect their new country and also contributed greatly to the culture, art, sports and political life by representing Turkey successfully in international arenas as well. Caucasian Cultural Association, Istanbul, which was established in 1952, like other Caucasian Cultural associations and foundations in Turkey, tries to promote and maintain authentic Caucasian culture with its language, music, folk dances, traditions and customs, thus trying to enrich the colorful and varied cultural wealth of Turkey. With such exhibitions, we proudly bring together the works of our people of art who have contributed vastly to the cultural inheritance of our country." From the text of Günsel Surdum Avci.
