360232Amsterdam the Netherlands: Maatschappy Elsevier / Boek- en Staandrukkerlj v. h. Ellerman Harms & Co. First Edition. Softcover. Fair. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. A consecutive run of the first six 6 issues of a leading anti-war anti-German political and literary magazine Het Toppunt der Beschaving The Summit of Civilization which ran for two years. It featured the excellent artistic talents and lithographs of Louis Raemaekers 1869-1956 one of the most successful propagandists of the W.W.I. period. Steve Goddard put together a 2010 exhibition for the Spencer Museum of Art "Machine in a Void: World War I & the Graphic Arts" that featured his work and highlighted the importance of this magazine. The Netherlands was at the time 1915 a neutral country and became outraged at the reports of German atrocities during the War and these are part of the Dutch response bracing and memorable. Each issue in illustrated softpaper measuring 15 1/2" tall x 12" wide sewn with thread some being worn and loose. Moderately soiled and chipped along edges each issue with illustrated wraps over 12 bound-in fine lithographic reproductions. Each lithograph is captioned in Dutch German English and French. The six issues are: Eerste Serie=zevende druk; Tweede Serie=vijfde druk; Derde Serie=vijfde druk; Vierde Serie=Vierde druk; Vijfde Serie=derde druk; Zesde Serie. The six were published in 1915 and 1916. Louis Raemaekers was so outrageous to German authorities that the latter attempted to have the former put on trial for undercutting Dutch "neutrality" and eventually offered a bounty for Raemaekers to be delivered to them dead or alive of 12000 guilders. This led to Raemaekers to move in exile to England to ride out the war. Louis Raemaekers April 6 1869 – July 26 1956 was formally trained as a painter but became a caricaturist and editorial cartoonist for the Amsterdam newspaper De Telegraaf during W.W.I. The Wikipedia entry about his notes that upon the commencement of W.W.I. Raemaekers' "message was clear: the Netherlands had to take sides for the Allies and abandon its neutral stance. His graphic cartoons depicted the rule of the German military in Belgium portrayed the Germans as barbarians and Kaiser Wilhelm II as an ally of Satan" Wikipedia.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
