183424462Glasgow 1834. Very good overall. An illustrated advertising sheet with 3 columns of Glasgow shipping advertisements which serves as writing paper for a half penny hand written letter. The letter is from Gilkison & Brown to Messrs. Davidson & Syme lawyers and comments that there are no vessels from Clyde to New York at present "nor will there be any for some weeks". It quotes the cabin and steerage passage rates also.

Gilkison & Brown were maritime agents for the Canada Company in Glasgow; they acted as ship and insurance brokers and commission agents. Emigration from Scotland to Canada and other destinations was in response to tenant congestion and starvation as well as land owner bankruptcy. In the 1830s 20000 highlanders emigrated to Canada.

The maritime advertising printed in 3 columns is for: the Royal Exchange Assurance of London; individual ads for 10 ships all out of Glasgow and bound for ports all over the world including New York; Calcutta; Trinidad; the Cape of Good Hope; Trieste Italy Genoa Kingston Jamaica and Honduras; and St. Thomas. Each ad is accompanied with an engraved sailing ship.

The letter is addressed to Messrs. Davidson & Syme Charlotte Street Edinburgh and franked also with a stamped 24 Oct 1834. "COCLK PM" is stamped in 2 sections due to the letter fold.

15 3/4 x 9 3/4"; folds to 7 7/8 x 9 3/4". Wax seal caused small hole affecting some words in manuscript text.

A lovely example of a used letter sheet. unknown
15211County Times" Printers Welshpool. No date 1945 but presentation dated by Hahn 13 June 1945. 28pp. 4to. Stapled into brown wraps with title printed on cover. In fair condition aged and worn with short closed tear at foot of first leaf. On the first page: 'Confidential. To the Friends of Gordonstoun For Private Circulation Only.' Kahn's inscription at the head of the cover reads: 'To W. H. Green and J. F. Green with love and gratitude for their help to a guilty Headmaster on the 17. VI. 1944. Kurt Hahn 13. VI. 45.' Scarce: only three copies found on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. These entries are variously dated to 1941 and 1943 but neither date can be correct as the pamphlet refers to events in 1944. Both the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles were educated at Gordonstoun which the latter described as 'Colditz in kilts'. County Times," Printers, Welshpool. No date [1945], but presentation dated by Hahn 13 June 1945. paperback
11107With manuscript inscription dated 1871. 4to 2 pp. On first leaf of a bifolium. Text clear and complete. Good on lightly-aged laid paper with watermark of 'A ANNANDALE & SONS'. Stuck down on the reverse of the blank second leaf of the bifolium is a square of paper from the leaf to which it was attached in an album and beneath this square visible when held up to the light is the inscription: 'Imperfectly printed Annie Stirling Stuart Castlemilk 1871'. The poem is 48 lines long arranged in twelve stanzas. Signed 'H. M. E.' in type at end perhaps one of the Erskines relations by marriage of the Stirling-Stuart family. A lament for 'happy youth! too quickly sped Within these old grey towers'. First stanza reads: 'THE autumn winds are moaning Around the old square tower Where once three hundred years ago Was Scottish Mary's Bower.' The reference is to Cassilton Tower around which Castlemilk House was built where Mary Queen of Scots stayed on the eve of the Battle of Langside 1568. References to the 'Tay bridge' and 'great city' i.e. Glasgow. Last stanza: 'The memory of our early home Its fairest lustre shed O'er lives that blossom in good deeds That live when we are dead!' Excessively scarce: no copy in the National Library of Scotland on COPAC or WorldCat. Castlemilk House was built around Cassilton Tower which was started in 1460 on the site of a 13th-century castle. The five-hundred-year-old Castlemilk House was demolished by Glasgow Corporation in 1969 to make way for an ill-advised housing project. Castlemilk is now a district of Glasgow. With manuscript inscription dated 1871. unknown
