Fine English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Turkish. Kurtulus Savasi baslangicinda. Report of Harbord. The Harbord Commission was a U.S. political commission tasked with studying the relationship between the United States and Armenia following World War I. In 1919 President Woodrow Wilson sent two missions to the Near East to gather information on issues relating to the future of the region in the immediate aftermath of World War I. One group, later known as the "King-Crane Commission", was civilian, centered on Istanbul(Constantinople), and tasked to interview community leaders and representatives of the Ottoman government. In August 1919, a second group, the "American Military Mission to Armenia" was sent out to travel to the centre of Anatolia and then to Armenia. It was headed by Major General James G. Harbord. Secretary of State Robert Lansing instructed Harbord to "investigate and report on the political, military, geographic, administrative, economic, and such other considerations involved in possible American interests and responsibilities in the region.". The fifty-member mission arrived in Istanbul (Constantinople) at the beginning of September 1919, and then traveled for 30 days: by train to Adana, Aleppo, and Mardin, then by motor car to Diyarbakir, Harput, Malatya, Sivas, Erzincan, Erzurum, Kars, Etchmiadzin, Erivan and, finally, Tiflis. A side-expedition left the main party at Sivas in order to investigate conditions at Marsovan, Samsun, and along the Black Sea coast as far as Trebizond. For information on the important vilayets of Bitlis and Van, General Harbord relied on information provided in the Niles and Sutherland Report. The Harbord report also indicated that the Turkish population was far more numerous than the Armenians, following the massacres and deportations of the Armenian population in Eastern Anatolia. Harbord's report stated that "the temptation to reprisals for past wrongs" would make it extremely difficult to maintain peace in the region. The final conclusion of the report was the inclusion of Armenia in the possible American mandate for Asia Minor and Rumelia since a mandate for Armenia alone was not deemed feasible under these conditions.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. Ills. 184 p. "One of the strongest desires of the Hrant Dink Foundation, from the very first day it was founded, was to create a memory repository on the Armenians of Turkey, based on various documents shedding light on oral history records, culture and identity. This work is the first material outcome of that desire. It aims to recover the traces of the political and cultural memory of Armenians living in Turkey and of the Armenian community, to reveal the continuity in a cultural existence, to find out how individuals with an Armenian identity perceive themselves and the 'others', and in so doing, to reflect the reality of Armenians still living in Turkey in all its political, cultural and historical dimensions. To reflect this reality, it was carried out as an oral history research study. To this end a working group under the guidance of Ferda Balancar got in touch with Armenians living in Istanbul and in various cities of Anatolia. Interviews were held with 40 people, 21 of whom were women and 19 men. 12 researchers participated in this study. This book contains 15 of those interviews. You will read the stories of people ranging from 19 to 70 years of age as they themselves told them. You will see that the stories tell not only of their remembrance of history but of their lives today. Because today is important too. And since this is so, then the last word should go to Hrant: "Come, let's understand each other first. Come, let's respect each other's suffering first. Come, let's let each other live first." (From the preface of Ali Bayramoglu). ARMENIANS Social history Non-Mulism minority.
New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 104 p. Mîrzâ Makhdûm was one of the most interesting characters of Ottoman history. He was a high-ranking bureaucrat in the Safavid State, but after taking refuge in the Ottoman Empire, he began a career as a judge in Diyarbakir, Tripoli and Haramayn in the late sixteenth century. He lived with a dilemma not only in the countries in which he lived, but also in his family life. Since, his mother's side is Sunni, his father's side is Shi'a. His work on the Qizilbash titled Al-Nawâkid li-Bunyân al-Rawâfid is crucial to understand the era. This study indicates the identity crisis of Mîrzâ Makhdûm via investigating the Sunni-Shia conflict through the eyes of a scholar and tries to understand how a scholar from Iran has reached high ranks in the Ottoman Empire. Also, this study provides an exciting opportunity to understand the Safavid policy in the sixteenth century, the bureaucracy in the ilmiye class and the attitude of the Ottoman bureaucrats towards the Safavid scholars.

ill., br.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 392 p. A breath of Istanbul. Within these pages, we experience Istanbul life, the "you and me" that is this place's heartbeat. Around us swirl the amazing colors of many rainbows and dozens of scents. Here the Istanbulites-Armenian, Greek, Kurdish, Jew, Alawite, Christian, the rich, the poor, the conservative, the marginal-all bear witness to Istanbul's many-faceted selves. This novel of hope is a small reflection of what some people call "utopia" and is foremost a story about living in harmony. Lose yourself in Istanbul's streets while wandering with me as we explore you, me, our lives, our loves, our unfulfilled feelings and wishes, our dreams, fears, hopes, loneliness, struggles, and the daily ups and downs of our fellow millennials. The meaning of Istanbul, Turkey, and the world is "you" for me. They are all "me" and "us." That's the only reality I believe in. Nothing-no work of art or music-will ever be able to fill and nourish your soul as Istanbul does. No scents will ever burn themselves into your memories like the ones in Istanbul. No wisdom except that which you find here will ever seem that real(istic) to you. I have taken a deep breath of IItanbul. All of its life-affirming air I have to share with you has been exhaled into these pages.
